Unlocking Seabed Secrets with Underwater Robots

From September 22 to October 13, 2014, the NATO Research Vessel Alliance is conducting the Multinational AutoNomy Experiment (MANEX ā€˜14) along the Ligurian coast to demonstrate the advantages of mapping the seabed using autonomous vehicles. Throughout the experiment, multiple autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) equipped with modern sensors relevant to NATO minehunting missions are being employed in the Ligurian Sea along the Italian coast between Framura and Bonassola to collect data that will allow NATO researchers to advance the area of seabed mapping using autonomous vehiclesā€¦

NATO Demonstrates Defense Against Terrorism

On November 21-22, 2013 the NATO Center for Maritime Research and experimentation, in collaboration with the Italian Navy COMFORDRAG, hosts the TALON 13 demonstration, part of the NATO Defense Against Terrorism (DAT) program. How could an intrusion in a maritime restricted area, either friendly or hostile, be quickly detected and identified? How could it be efficiently blocked by warning and non-lethal devices? The TALON 13 system being presented at the NATO Center for Maritime Research and Experimentation (part of the NATO Science and Technology Organization) addresses these questions and features the new trends in the field: in the future port protection will be autonomousā€¦

Subsea GofM Acoustic Experiments Begin

US Naval Surface Warfare Center with Office of Naval Research (ONR) &  academia, is participating in a multi-country, acoustic scattering experiment in the Gulf of Mexico until June 2013. The test event dubbed TREX is a Target Reverberation Experiment with the key objective to understand how undersea environments impact the acoustic signature of a target. The collected data will be compared to sophisticated, physic-based, propagation and target scattering models. TREX is also being referred to as Gulf of Mexico Exercise 2013, or GULFEX13.
