A explosion occurred on Wednesday at the Freeport LNG liquefied natural gas plant on the Texas Gulf Coast, according to police, and prompting an evacuation of nearby residents in Quintana, Texas.The plant can process up to 2.1 billion cubic feet of natural gas per day into a supercooled liquid for export.Freeport LNG acknowledged an incident occurred around 11:40 a.m. local time with providing further details. U.S. energy consumption, production, and exports have reached record highs in 2018, said U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA).The United States produced a record amount of energy from various sources in 2018, reaching 96 quadrillion British thermal units (quads), an 8% increase from 2017. This increase in production outpaced the 4% increase in U.S. energy consumption, which also reached a record high of 101 quads.At the same time, U.S. energy exports increased 18% to a record high of 21 quads in 2018, reducing net energy imports into the United States to a 54-year low of 4 quads, or less than 4% of U.S. energy consumption.In 2018, crude oil and natural gas accounted for 57% of all U.S.

Russian energy giant Gazprom and Japanese Mitsui & Co. Ltd. have signed a memorandum of understanding at the Eastern Economic Forum on the liquefied natural gas plant project Baltic LNG.The memorandum was signed after the meeting between Gazprom CEO Alexey Miller and Mitsui Chairman of the Board of Directors Masami Iijima.The parties discussed the ongoing cooperation on the Sakhalin II project and the prospects for collaboration between the companies. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has raised concerns that Royal Dutch Shell's proposed $70 billion takeover of BG Group may lessen gas supply competition in eastern Australia and delayed a final decision on the bid to November. The competition watchdog said, after preliminary investigations, the proposed takeover  could damage the interests of east coast and Queensland gas users and force up prices. ACCC said a large number of market participants had expressed concerns that the proposed takeover may lead Shell's Arrow Energy to sell its gas into BG's Queensland Curtis liquefied natural gas plant (QCLNG) for export.

AltaGas says it is on track to build a liquefied natural gas plant in British Columbia by 2018. The Canadian Press is reporting this morning comments made by AltaGas CEO refuting a recent International Energy Agency report saying LNG will be a slow industry to take off, with no facility built in the country by 2020. “We think we’ll prove them wrong in this decade,” David Cornhill told the Canadian Press in an interview. The proposed project is headed by the Douglas Channel LNG Consortium, a partnership led by AltaGas Ltd, a midstream company known in the Peace as the operator of the Younger Natural Gas Liquids Extraction Plant in Taylor and the Bear Mountain Wind Park in Dawson Creek.

BP Plc, citing low oil prices, tried to whittle away at $13.7 billion in potential fines under the Clean Water Act on Tuesday as the penalty phase started in its trial over the 2010 Gulf of Mexico oil spill. BP said its fine should be modest as it took extensive steps to mitigate the worst offshore disaster in U.S. history and that the defendant named in the case, BP's exploration and production unit, known as BPXP, cannot afford a big penalty. "There has been no collapse of the ecosystem," BP lawyer Mike Brock said in opening statements, contending that the Gulf has been more resilient than thought. Environmental groups say it could take decades for the Gulf to recover.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) has released its latest Short-Term Energy and Winter Fuels Outlook (http://www.eia.gov/forecasts/steo/). •         EIA projects average U.S. household expenditures for natural gas, heating oil, electricity, and propane will decrease this winter heating season (October 1 through March 31) compared with last winter, which was 11% colder than the previous 10-year average nationally. Projected average household expenditures for propane and heating oil are 27% and 15% lower, respectively, because of lower heating demand and prices. U.S. regular gasoline retail prices are projected to continue to decline to an average of $3.18/gal in December, 12 cents lower than projected in last month's STEO. EIA expects U.S. regular gasoline retail prices, which averaged $3.51/gal in 2013, to average $3.46/gal in 2014 and $3.41/gal in 2015, 4 cents lower and 6 cents lower than last month's STEO, respectively.
