Pollution Fears Grow as Grounded Ship Leaks Oil off Gibraltar

Gibraltar struggled on Friday to minimize any environmental impact of a fuel leak from a bulk carrier three days after it collided with a tanker, as reports of oiled birds emerged and several beaches in Spain and the British territory flew red flags.The government of the enclave on the southern tip of Spain said all diesel fuel from tanks of the beached OS-35 had been removed.

First Tanker Moves to Cameron LNG Plant since Hurricane Delta

The first liquefied natural gas tanker to go to Cameron LNG's export plant in Louisiana since Hurricane Delta was set to arrive on Tuesday.Golar Seal was [on Tuesday] sailing up the Calcasieu Ship Channel on its way to Cameron, according to Refinitiv ship tracking data.The last vessel to go to Cameron was SK Audace on Oct. 4-5, according to the Refinitiv data. First LNG Export Cargo Departs Cove Point LNG

The Gemmata liquefied natural gas tanker left Dominion Energy Inc's Cove Point LNG export facility in Maryland early Friday, likely carrying the first export cargo from the facility that was expected to enter service in March, according to Reuters shipping data and energy traders. Officials at Dominion were not immediately available for comment. When the Gemmata docked at Cove Point earlier this week, analysts said it would likely be the first vessel to pick up fuel from the facility since the tanker came from Spain - a non-LNG exporting country - with less than a full cargo. Dominion has spent about $4 billion to add export facilities at Cove Point, long an LNG import terminal on the Chesapeake Bay.

Vessel Docks at Maryland Cove Point LNG Terminal

Gemmata could be the first vessel to pick up fuel from the facility since the tanker came from Spain - a non-LNG exporting country - with less than a full cargo, according to the shipping data. In addition to Gemmata, another vessel, the Methane Spirit, is also headed for Cove Point, according to the shipping data. Methane Spirit is located near Singapore and is expected to reach Cove Point around March 31. Once it enters service, Cove Point will be the second big LNG export terminal in the lower 48 U.S. Cove Point is designed to liquefy about 0.75 billion cubic feet per day (bcfd) of gas. One bcfd can power about 5 million homes. In December, Dominion said Royal Dutch Shell Plc would take the initial LNG cargoes from Cove Point.

Cove Point LNG Terminal's First Export Imminent

Methane Spirit, a liquefied natural gas tanker, said on Thursday it would arrive at Dominion Energy Inc's Cove Point LNG export facility in Maryland around March 31, according to Reuters shipping data. If correct, that could be the first vessel to pick up a cargo from the LNG facility, which Virginia-based Dominion said it expects to enter service in March. Dominion said it planned to spend $4 billion to add export facilities at Cove Point, long an LNG import terminal on the Chesapeake Bay. The Methane Spirit is currently off the coast of Japan where it was expected to drop off a cargo from Australia, according to the shipping data. Once it enters service, Cove Point will be the second big LNG export terminal in the lower 48 U.S.

BW LNG Tanker to Arrive in Rotterdam on Feb. 18

Boat that Attacked Tanker off Yemen Carried Explosives

Unknown assailants who opened fire on a gas tanker last week off the coast of Yemen were also carrying a "substantial amount of explosives", the vessel's owner said on Thursday, and a maritime source said it may have been an attempted suicide attack. Security experts said the new details of the Oct. 25 incident would heighten concerns for shipping in the narrow Bab al-Mandab waterway at the entrance to the Red Sea, a major choke point in the world oil trade. In an initial statement last week, shipping group Teekay said its LNG (liquefied natural gas) tanker Galicia Spirit had "experienced a suspected piracy attack" but no one had managed to board it. In an update on Thursday, Teekay said it had now conducted an investigation with security experts.

Gas Tanker Attacked Near Key Shipping Lane Off Yemen

Unknown assailants attacked a gas tanker off the coast of Yemen close to the Bab al-Mandab waterway in the latest flare up in an area through which much of the world's oil passes, shipping and security officials said on Wednesday. The incident, the first attack on a commercial ship since July, followed missile attacks in recent weeks on military craft, including U.S. navy vessels, which were launched from Yemen that had already raised risks for merchant shipping. Shipping group Teekay said its LNG (liquefied natural gas) tanker Galicia Spirit "experienced a suspected piracy attack whilst off the coast of Yemen" on Oct. 25. "No third parties managed to board the vessel during the incident and all crew members are safe and have been accounted for," Teekay said in a statement.

Yemen Conflict: Shipping Lines Pull Back

The Saudi Arabian-led coalition of anti-Houthi forces attacking Yemen has tightened the blockade on Yemen's ports affecting shipping activity including the delivery and loading of oil and gas shipments. Ships are unlikely to be able to access ports in areas that the coalition deems to be under Houthi rebel control. Navigation in Yemen’s territorial waters has been banned and ships are not allowed into Yemen unless inspected and approval by the Saudi-led coalition forces. The Grace Acacia, a Bahamas-flagged liquefied natural gas tanker, was scheduled to load cargo at the Balhaf LNG terminal on Friday, but the loading has been delayed and the tanker is currently anchored at the Fujairah port in the United Arab Emirates, a trader said.

Ship Bound for Breaking Finds New Career

The Margaret Hill, a 50,700 tonne liquid natural gas tanker, was stopped from leaving the UK’s Southampton docks in August this year. The Environment Agency took swift action after it received intelligence that the ship was bound for dismantling on the Indian subcontinent, where ships are routinely broken up on beaches in conditions which put workers and the environment at risk. Due to its age, the Margaret Hill is likely to contain hazardous materials such as asbestos. Waste ships containing hazardous materials can only be dismantled at properly authorised dismantling facilities in either the EU or an Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) country.

CG Monitoring LNG Vessel Repairs

The Coast Guard is monitoring and assisting a Liquefied Natural Gas tanker that temporarily lost propulsion about 45 miles east of Boston today. The 920 ft tanker Suez Matthew, carrying 31 people and a full load of LNG from Trinidad to Boston, lost propulsion just before 12 a.m., Dec. 27. Propulsion was restored aboard the Suez Matthew within the hour and the tankship executed a successful test of propulsion by 8:45 a.m. The Coast Guard Cutter Jefferson Island and the commercial tugs Liberty and Freedom are escorting the carrier to an anchorage in Broad Sound. There, Coast Guard marine inspectors and investigators, along with the vessel’s classification society surveyor, will inspect the ship to determine why it lost propulsion. The tugs will also remain in the area to assist as needed.

LNG Ship Disabled off Cape Cod

The Unified Command at Coast Guard Sector Boston is continuing to monitor and assist the Liquefied Natural Gas tanker Catalunya Spirit, which lost propulsion and became disabled and adrift east of Cape Cod Monday morning. Teekay Corporation, which operates the Catalunya Spirit, contracted four tugboats and three technical representatives to assist the tanker. As Concerns About Seaport Security Mount, the U.S. Government Reacts

"Maritime Domain Awareness" is the new watchword for the maritime community. The discovery of a well equipped, suspected Al-Qa'eda member in a cargo container in Italy was one of the recent stark lessons in the vulnerability of maritime transportation security. In addition, the U.S. Coast Guard temporarily denied entry to the liquefied natural gas tanker Matthew to Boson for insufficient security and a crew member on another vessel who jumped ship in New Orleans was later found to have the telephone number of an Al-Qa'eda terrorist. Congress and the Executive branch are now turning their attention to improving seaport security in ways that could disrupt the movement of ships, freight, crews, and passengers and result in major operational changes for companies in the industry.

Daewoo Secures $1.66b in New Order

Daewoo Shipbuilding Marine and Engineering Co. said it has received a combined $1.66b in new orders this month to build 16 vessels. The vessels won together with its Romanian subsidiary, Daewoo Mangalia Heavy Industries S.A., include four container vessels and one liquefied natural gas tanker, the shipbuilder said in a statement. South Korea, home to seven of the world's top 10 shipyards, clinched record-high orders last year on strong demand for crude carriers and offshore exploration equipment amid lofty oil prices. South Korean shipbuilders such as Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. and Samsung Heavy Industries Co. are expected to see their exports rise 18 per cent to $26 billion this year on the back of continuous demand for high-end ships and other products. STX Gets First Order for LNG Tanker

STX Shipbuilding Co., received its first order to build a liquefied natural gas tanker. The shares climbed to a record. Spain's Empresa Naviera Elcano SA agreed to buy the vessel for $225m, with an option to purchase three more LNG tankers, which may increase the value of the contract to $1 billion, the Jinhae, South Korea-based company said in a regulatory filing yesterday. Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. and other South Korean yards took almost half of last year's orders in the $100 billion global ship industry, as demand for fuel and global trade encouraged shipping companies to expand their fleet. Samsung Records LNG Order

Qatar Gas transport Company (Nakilat) has placed order for another Q-Max LNG carrier, the largest liquefied natural gas tanker in operation, according to a report on www.gulf-times.com. Nakilat signed the shipbuilding contract for Q-Max, with a capacity of 265,000 metric tonnes, with Samsung Heavy Industries, South Korea. With the vessel joining Nakilat service, the company will have a fleet strength will rise to 17. A Q-Max vessel costs about $300mn. In addition to the fully-owned 17 LNG carriers, Nakilat holds stakes between 30% and 60% in another 28 LNG carriers either delivered or on order to service various Qatari LNG projects. The ship will be powered by twin, slow speed diesel engines and will have full-scale on-board re-liquefaction plants which maximize LNG deliveries.
