This Day In Naval History: July 1
1801 - Commodore Richard Dale's squadron arrives at Gibraltar for the protection of American interests and to strike at the Barbary Pirates in the Mediterranean. Squadron ships were USS President, USS Philadelphia, USS Essex, and USS Enterprise. 1850 - The Naval School at Annapolis, Md., is renamed the U.S. Naval Academy and adopts a four-year course of study. Also on this date, Commander Cornelius K. Stribling becomes the first Superintendent of the Naval Academy and serves until the fall of 1853.

Ellyson, the first naval aviator, for his two solo flights in A-1. 1916 - Establishment of informal school for officers assigned to submarines at New London, Conn. 1933 - USS Constitution commences tour of principal U.S. seaports.

In the early days of subsea technology, there were a number of pioneers: men and women who stepped over the edge of what we knew about the underwater world. These individuals left the comfort of solid ground to explore beneath the waves and report back to the rest of us what they had seen. They pushed boundaries, raised the stakes and in some instances opened our minds to the possibilities. They were subsea visionaries. Today, those boundaries continue to be pushed, and undersea technology, now more than ever, is reaching new heights.
Chilean Navy’s New Nav Simulator
The Chilean Navy’s Naval School, Arturo Prat, has inaugurated their newly installed Transas NTPRO 4000 Navigation Simulator. The opening ceremony was presided by the Navy’s Teaching Director, Commodore Rafael González Rosenqvist, joined by the Naval School Director, Cap. Osvaldo Schwarzenberg Ashton, staff officials, professors, cadets, Transas Contract Manager, Mr. Francisco Palumbo and Sales Manager of the Transas Chilean representative, Naval Radio, Mr. Andrey Goriachev. The simulator represents a step into virtual teaching methods for the Chilean Navy, utilizing simulation databases specific to their operations. The installed simulator includes five Navigation modules allowing the simultaneous training of up to twenty-five cadets in navigation and tactical maneuvers…

This Day in Navy History
October 10, 1845 - Naval School, later the Naval Academy, opens in Annapolis, Maryland with 50 midshipmen and seven faculty. 1923 - First American-built rigid airship, Shenandoah, is christened. It used helium gas instead of hydrogen. 1944 - Opening of Leyte campaign begins with attack of four Carrier Task Groups of Task Force 38 on Okinawa and Ryukyus. 1960 - Navy assigned responsibility for program management and technial direction of Project SPASUR, the first U.S. universal satellite detection and tracking network. 1985 - Fighters from USS Saratoga (CV-60) force Egyptian airliner, with the hijackers of the cruise ship Achille Lauro aboard, to Italy, where the hijackers were taken into custody.
