American Salvage Association Names New Executive Director

The American Salvage Association (ASA) announced that Mike Dean has been appointed Executive Director. In this role, Dean is responsible for providing strategic leadership and direction to the organization and ensuring that ASA’s mission and objectives are achieved. He oversees day-to-day operations, financial management, government affairs, working committees and ASA staff. Guardian Salvage SUPSALV Masterminded

Naval Sea System Command's (NAVSEA) Supervisor of Salvage & Diving (SUPSALV) continues to support the removal of the wreck. Guardian ran aground on the coral reef Jan. 17, while transiting the Sulu Sea. After the initial grounding, strong winds pushed the mine counter-measurees ship parallel to the reef and further aground causing flooding and structural damage which prevented refloating of the vessel or removal of the ship intact. SUPSALV is part of a command task unit established to perform the salvage operations and are providing salvage expertise and equipment to conduct operations.

DeMasi Named Deputy Director Gov’t Services, Gibbs & Cox

NAVSEA Warfare Center Personnel Recognized

Four Naval Sea System Command (NAVSEA) warfare center scientists and engineers were among those recognized, July 23, at the annual Top Navy Scientists and Engineers of the Year award ceremony at the Pentagon. As NAVSEA field activities, Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) and Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) are the Navy's principal research, development, test and evaluation (RDT&E), analysis and assessment activities for ship and submarine platform, including machinery technology for surface combat systems, ordnance, mines, and strategic systems products and support. Trinity Yachts Delivers First of Two Patrol Craft

Trinity Yachts, L.L.C., through its wholly owned subsidiary, Trinity Offshore, L.L.C., has delivered the first of two aluminum 82 ft. patrol craft it is building in New Orleans under a sub-contract to United States Marine, Inc., (U.S.M.I.) of Gulfport. The craft design is similar to those built for United States Special Operations Command (SOCOM) in the late 1990’s by the Trinity Marine Group. These vessels are still in service today. The first hull was recently delivered to U.S.M.I. for outfitting and the second hull is scheduled for delivery to U.S.M.I. in late March 2009.

NAVSEA Salvage Engineers Recover Plane Materials

Naval Sea System Command's (NAVSEA) Supervisor of Salvage and Diving (SUPSALV) conducted the recovery of the engines and other components of an EA-6B "Prowler" Aug. 17-20. The plane crashed near Feb. 12. The recovery utilized the Navy's remotely operated vehicle (ROV) "Deep Drone" operating from the Military Sealift Command's USNS Salvor (T-ARS 52). The EA-6B crashed into the in 6,500 feet of water while conducting night landing qualifications. The recovery operation was performed in order to assist the crash investigation in determining the cause of the accident and the possible implication it may have on the rest of the EA-6B inventory. Deep Drone is the Navy's workhorse ROV designed to meet the Navy's mid-water salvage requirements down to a maximum depth of 8,000 feet of seawater.

NAVSEA Engineers Selected for Engineer of the Year Awards

The National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE) announced the selection of D. Mark Johnson, Director, Force Electromagnetic Environmental Effects and Spectrum Management Engineering Branch as the U.S. Navy, Naval Sea System Command (NAVSEA) Engineer of the Year and the NAVSEA candidate for the 2008 Federal Engineer of the Year Award. Thomas Choinski of the Naval Sea Undersea Warfare Center Division (NUWC), Newport Division was also named as a Top Ten finalist by NSPE. “This award is an overwhelming honor. In effect, I view it as validating the hard work of our field activities and contractor partners, and an admirable reflection of the value NAVSEA leadership places on its people.” said Johnson.

SeaArk Marine Awarded Contract

SeaArk Marine, aluminum work and patrol boat builder, was recently awarded a contract to built six 40 ft. Dauntless Class patrol boats by the U.S. Navy. The SeaArks are being purchased by the Department of Defense, in support of the PERU Riverine Program. The contract will be administered by the Naval Sea System Command. The vessels will be in operation in Peru on the Amazon River and other river systems. The Peruvian Coast Guard will use the boats for patrol and drug interdiction. Each SeaArk will be outfitted with twin diesel inboard engines, extensive electronics package, berthing for four, galley, head with shower and weapons mounts. Delivery is scheduled to begin in June 2000, with the last boat to be delivered in November 2000.

NAVSEA Warfare Centers Hold First Annual Awards Ceremony

The leadership of NAVSEA's Warfare Centers presented the first in an annual series of awards to highlight and recognize groups and individuals who are working to ensure that the Warfare Center Enterprise vision becomes a reality. In an Oct. 4th ceremony at the Washington Navy Yard, eleven groups and 66 individuals were recognized in three categories: Innovation; Collaboration; Transformation and Change Agent.
