USS Porter en Route to Black Sea

The Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Porter (DDG 78) began its north-bound transit to the Black Sea August 8, to enhance regional maritime stability and a show of support for our NATO allies and partners in the region.This is the sixth time a U.S. ship has visited the Black Sea since the beginning of 2019. USS Donald Cook Sails into Black Sea

The Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Donald Cook (DDG 75) began its north-bound transit of the Dardanelles Strait, en route to the Black Sea Feb. 19 to conduct maritime security operations and enhance regional maritime stability, combined readiness, and naval capability with our NATO allies and partners in the region.The ship last visited the Black Sea in January 2019, during which it visited Batumi, Georgia and conducted an exercise with two Georgian Coast Guard ships. During its time in port the ship's crew was warmly received by their Georgian hosts and were greeted on the pier with an arrival ceremony that included a traditional Georgian dance."Each visit here affords us the unique opportunity to work with our regional maritime partners," said Cmdr.

US Navy to Celebrate Earth Day

Performing missions at sea, on land and in the skies daily around the globe, the Navy is a constant presence in the environment. To emphasize stewardship on all fronts, the Navy workforce is taking part in Earth Day-related activities throughout the month of April. The official Earth Day date is April 22. Navy's Top Officer Visits Naval Station Rota

Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Adm. John Richardson and Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy (MCPON) Steven Giordano visited Naval Station Rota, March 27 and 28. During their time in Rota, Richardson and Giordono visited the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer, USS Ross (DDG 71), ate lunch with the 2016 Sailors of the Year, viewed a display of Commander, Task Force 68 expeditionary equipment and held an "all-hands call" with installation Sailors, civilians and family members. While meeting Sailors around the installation, Richardson said it was clear Naval Station Rota Sailors are mission-focused and very well led. "I am incredibly proud and humbled to be your chief of naval operations," said Richardson.

U.S. 6th Fleet Exercises Ordnance Loading Capability in Rota

U.S. 6th Fleet, in coordination with USS California (SSN 781), Navy Munitions Command Rota, Spain and Naval Submarine Support Facility (NSSF) New London, conducted an ordnance loading exercise at Naval Station Rota, Spain, Jan. 13, 2017. The expeditionary ordnance loading exercise demonstrated the U.S. Navy’s capability to load ordnance onto naval vessels in non-traditional locations. This exercise demonstrates enhanced capabilities to strengthen naval power at and from the sea to contribute to a more stable, secure and prosperous European region. This is the first in a series of expeditionary weapons loading events planned for the next year in the U.S. 6th Fleet area of operations.

USS Porter Hosts Albanian Dignitaries

The Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Porter (DDG 78) hosted a reception for senior Albanian defense officials aboard the ship September 26. The reception was an expression of Porter’s appreciation for hosting the ship and its crew in Vlore, and it also served to strengthen the ties between the U.S. and Albania. USNS Spearhead Delivers Materials to Ghana Charities

The U.S. Navy’s joint high-speed vessel USNS Spearhead (JHSV 1) delivered wheelchairs and medical supplies to Ghanaian non-governmental organizations March 26, 2015. The materials were delivered under the U.S. Navy’s Project Handclasp program, which accepts humanitarian, educational and goodwill donations, contributed by the American private sector, and transports them to foreign nations on a space-available basis aboard U.S. Navy vessels. Spearhead delivered 168 of these three-wheeled, hand-cranked wheelchairs, with 154 being adult sized and 14 being for children. The shipment weighed more than 15,600 pounds, with an estimated total worth of $42,000. The humanitarian items are from charities in the United States.

USS Ross Arrives in Rota

The Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Ross (DDG 71) arrived at Naval Station Rota, Spain to begin her forward deployment to the U.S. 6th Fleet area of operations, June 16. Ross, departed Norfolk, Va., June 3, and is the second of four Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyers to be forward deployed to Rota, joining USS Donald Cook (DDG 75) which has been on station since February. The stationing of four Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer at Rota represents a national contribution by the US and Spain to NATO missile defence, enhancing the security of the European region, the Mediterranean Basin and the Atlantic Ocean. USS Porter Repair/Modernization Contract Awarded

Naval Sea Systems Command awarded a $49,435,634 firm-fixed price contract contract for the maintenance, modernization and repair of USS Porter to BAE Systems Norfolk Ship Repair. The fiscal year 2013 chief of naval operations (CNO) extended dry-docking selected restricted availability (EDSRA) was competed on a coast-wide basis to maximize competitive pricing and best-value to the government. The scope of work includes damage repairs resulting from the Aug. 12, 2012, collision in the Straits of Hormuz as well as previously planned maintenance and modernization.

Bataan Strike Group Returns to 2nd Fleet

Amphibious assault ship USS Bataan (LHD 5) pulls out of the Naval Station Rota Harbor. Bataan Expeditionary Strike Group conducted a port visit to Rota after conducting maritime operations in support of the global war on terrorism. U.S. The multipurpose amphibious assault ship USS Bataan (LHD 5) and elements of the Bataan Expeditionary Strike Group (ESG) successfully entered the U.S. 2nd Fleet area of operations (AOO) on June 26, as the group sailed west across the Atlantic Ocean. Bataan ESG stayed busy in the 6th Fleet AOO for approximately three weeks before making the trip toward home. As the flagship of the ESG, Bataan accomplished both internal unit level goals and assignments from the fleet commander during that time.
