More than 500 people assembled in Crystal City, Va. March 9 for the annual celebration of the anniversaries of the Seabees, Civil Engineer Corps (CEC), and Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC). NAVFAC Commander and Chief of Civil Engineers Rear Adm. Kate Gregory hosted the special occasion to honor these organizations' past, present and future. This year's ball marks the 71st anniversary of the Seabees, the 146th anniversary of the Civil Engineer Corps, and the 171st anniversary of NAVFAC, which was established in 1842 as the Bureau of Navy Yards and Docks.

Installation of the Marine Corps' first large scale wind turbine at Marine Corps Logistics Base (MCLB) Barstow began Jan. 8, with a kick-off meeting between Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Southwest, MCLB, and Southern California Edison (SCE). The meeting starts the official implementation of the first of its kind contract awarded to the Marine Corps in November 2007. "The purchase of this wind turbine will allow MCLB Barstow to meet energy conservation and savings requirements established by various federal laws, regulations and directives," said Monica Hernandez, NAVFAC Southwest contract specialist for Special Ventures Acquisition Utilities and Energy Contracting. The Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) announced the winners of its 2007 Design Awards program, Oct. 30, to showcase the Navy's best design and construction projects. Projects which were evaluated with such criteria as global and regional planning; facility plans and studies; new facility design; family housing; building alteration and reuse; and interior design by a panel of experts, composed of private sector and government service design professionals.
