Big Tankers' Need for Retrofit Slows Use of New Panama Canal

The promise that some oil traders and brokers saw for an expanded Panama Canal to become a new route for large tankers will take longer to realize than expected because many ships must first undergo inconvenient retrofits to transit through the new locks, shipping industry experts said. The modifications to these bigger oil carriers - which mostly involve fittings such as chocks and bollards that secure the ship's dock and tow lines - are needed because the new locks that opened in June use tug boats rather than locomotives to pull vessels.

Korean Shipyard Delivers Container Ship ‘Hanjin Argentina’

The 3600 TEU container ship, built under the supervision of Navgathi Marine by Hyundai Sambo delivered to Pacific International Lines. Hanjin Argentina is the third of a series of four such vessels ordered by Pacific International Lines of Singapore from the S. Korea shipbuilders. Navgathi Marine is providing the new building supervision services to eight PIL vessels under construction at Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries and Hyundai Mipo Dockyard of South Korea and a site team of Navgathi's is there to manage these projects.

Navgathi Engineering Acquires FORAN

Navgathi Marine Design and Constructions signed a contract with SENER for the use of FORAN in their design and shipbuilding activities in the town of Kochi, India. According to the agreement, the marine engineering company acquires licenses of FORAN, specifically the package of Forms (hull form generation, decks and bulkheads), General Arrangement and Naval Architecture calculations. The work to be performed by Navgathi includes basic design, detail design and generation of all information for production and assembly, both in new construction and conversions and repairs. From small boats to large ships and marine structures, the engineering provides engineering design solutions and technical consultancy always looking for innovation in every work.

Korean Shipyard Launches PIL Container Ship

The first ship of four 2800TEU container ships, 'Kota Gaya', for Pacific International Lines (PIL) launched from Hyundai Mipo Dockyard, Ulsan, S.Korea. Navgathi Marine is providing the project management for the new-buildings for Pacific International Lines and Navgathi’s professional team is on site to manage the project. The Kota Gaya is of 222 m LOA, beam 30 m and a 12 m scantling draft. She is powered by Hyundai-MAN B&W 8L70MC-C8.1 engines of nominal rating 26,160 KW x 108.0 RPM.
