Teledyne Acquires ChartWorld International

Teledyne Technologies Incorporated announced today that it has acquired ChartWorld International Limited and affiliates. ChartWorld, headquartered in Cyprus, with additional locations in Hamburg, Singapore, Vancouver and Tokyo, is a provider of digital marine navigation hardware and software provided through a subscription-based model. Terms of the transactions were not disclosed.Commercial maritime subscribers to ChartWorld’s software as a service (SaaS) receive free type-approved Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems (ECDIS), a lifetime warranty and global 24/7 support.

Shipowners' Club on Mayflower Autonomous Ship

The Shipowners' Club has revelead details about Mayflower Autonomous Ship project (MAS), which is an innovative new venture to design, build and sail the world’s first fully autonomous vessel across the Atlantic Ocean. The project’s name commemorates the anniversary of the Pilgrim Father’s voyage from Plymouth, UK to Plymouth in the New World (USA) on the original Mayflower in 1620. To mark the anniversary, marine tech company MSubs, Plymouth University and charitable research foundation Promare, are developing a 21-metre autonomous vessel based on a classic Oyster hull. The vessel is expected to take two years to build, outfit and complete rigorous sea trials.

P&O Ferries Chooses GNS Solutions

Ferry company P&O Ferries will take advantage of GNS solutions to deliver purchasing cost efficiencies and simplify navigation management and compliance on board. P&O Ferries, the British ferry company that operates ferries from the U.K. to Ireland and Continental Europe, has selected maritime solutions provider GNS to provide navigation products and services for its fleet of 15 vessels. Under the terms of the agreement, GNS will supply digital and paper navigational products as well as its Voyager software to all P&O vessels for a fixed annual price.

SevenCs Supports MariGreen Project

SevenCs is part of the EU INTERREG V A cross-border project “MariGreen” to support the maritime industry in the transition towards more efficient, greener and more sustainable shipping. The MariGreen project develops innovations for greener and low-emission shipping and supports in particular small and medium enterprises. There are 12 innovation projects behind "MariGreen" that are dealt with by a total of 59 partners located in the Netherlands and Germany. Alternative fuel for ships, Wind Energy Systems for freight and passenger shipping, improvement of logistics operations, resource-efficient ship operations and safety issues in nautical education and training are among the main topics. SevenCs engages in the MariGreen work stream “Wind propulsion in commercial shipping”.

First Type Approval Awarded for Portable Pilot Unit

DNV GL said it has developed a new industry standard for the type approval of Portable Pilot Units (PPUs); the ORCA Pilot G2 unit, created by SevenCs, a navigation equipment and software expert from Hamburg, is the first product worldwide to achieve compliance with the new standard. “In summer 2015, we developed the Type Approval for PPUs, in order to allow ports, terminal operators and pilot organisations to assure a minimum standard in the selection process of their equipment, against which manufacturers of navigation equipment can test their products.

Marlink Upgrades Maridive OSVs to VSAT Broadband

Egypt headquartered Maridive Group, an international offshore marine and oil support services provider, has chosen to migrate 24 of its Offshore Support Vessels to Marlink’s VSAT (Very Small Aperture Terminal) WaveCall Plus services in addition to one new build vessel. Maridive Group has a globally distributed fleet with an operational footprint covering North & West Africa, the Mediterranean, the Caspian Sea and Latin American countries. The company selected Marlink to upgrade its vessels to VSAT in 2012, and this latest contract adds a further five vessels operating in Venezuela and Brazil, while enhancing Maridive’s communication capabilities for business, crew and safety by upgrading to WaveCall Plus.

Virtual Aids to Navigation Mark Research Equipment

Vesper Marine will provide its Virtual Aid to Navigation technology to the French company CGG, a  geoscience company that provides geological and geophysical survey and analysis primarily to the oil and gas industry. In its ongoing quest to map the ocean’s floors, CGG survey vessels tow an array of cables in the water at a up to a 50 ft. depth, an array of cables that contain seismic energy sources, usually a series of airguns that are fired at regular intervals as the vessel moves along predetermined survey lines.

Voyager Navigation Software for German Research Vessel

Global Navigation Solutions (GNS) reported that operators Briese Schiffahrt has chosen to install its Voyager navigation software on Germany’s newest research vessel, RV Sonne.    Sonne will carry the GNS Voyager Package 3, which provides the crew with route planning capability, inventory management and automatic updating of paper and digital charts, as well as ordering and cataloguing, together with a free AVCS and Admiralty Information Overlay (AIO) viewer.   Sonne was launched by Chancellor Merkel on July 11, 2014 and replaces a vessel of the same name, which was in service for 44 years.
