FarSounder Receives 8th Patent

FarSounder expanded its IP portfolio with the issuance of its 8th Patent, number 11,609,316. This US patent expands the company’s patent portfolio for its unique sonar system and its 3D processing.The invention provides a sonar system that includes a forward-looking sonar device that operates in an integrated fashion with one or more other sonar devices so that a boater can have a reliable navigation tool. The forward looking sonar can include a transducer array that takes a three-dimensional acoustic reading of the objects and seafloor ahead. JIN Honors NYK for New Navigation Tool

Japanese shipping company Nippon Yusen (NYK) has been recognized with a special award from the Japan Institute of Navigation (JIN) for improving onboard operation through use of J-Marine NeCST,  a ship navigation support tool that was jointly developed by NYK, MTI Co. Ltd., and Japan Radio Co. Ltd. Virtual Aid to Navigation: Here Now, Here to Stay

Earliest Known Marine Navigation Tool Found

State-of-the-art laser scanning technology has helped researchers to confirm that an artifact recovered from the wreck of a sunken 15th century ship in the Indian Ocean is the earliest known marine navigation tool. When the Blue Water Recovery team found the object in 2014, they believed it was an astrolabe used by mariners to measure the altitude of the sun during voyages, but they were not certain as there were no visible navigational markings. The team approached Professor Williams, who conducts high-tech scanning analyses in his laboratory at WMG University of Warwick in the U.K.

Ove Bråthen strengthens Scandinavian sales team at MARIS

Mr Bråthen, who holds an electronics degree with focus on radar and underwater acoustics, brings more than 25 years’ international sales experience to the company, having spent the first six years of his career with the Royal Norwegian Navy. After working at sea on a number of seismic research vessels, Mr Bråthen spent the next decade as Sales Manager for Schlumberger Oilfield Services, selling high-tech products to the seismic, offshore and defence industries.

Wärtsilä Specifies Maris ECDIS Training Package

Wärtsilä has become the latest major marine company to specify MARIS hardware and software as part of its product specific training. The MARIS ECDIS900 system is to be installed at the Wärtsilä Land & Sea Training Academy Subic, the engine company’s instruction centre in the Philippines. The agreement is part of a standard cooperation offer from MARIS to provide cost effective product-specific solutions to leading training schools/institutes world-wide. It covers certification, ‘train the trainer’, yearly maintenance of software, software upgrades, documentation, charts and other digital services. Mr Gundersen cited the January 1, 2012 entry into force of the revised STCW Convention and Code, which includes new requirements relating to training in modern technology such as ECDIS.

NG Supplies Radar Systems for U.S. Navy Subs

Northrop Grumman Corporation’s (NYSE: NOC) Sperry Marine business unit has been awarded a contract to supply navigation radar systems for eight new U.S. Navy nuclear attack submarines. The firm, fixed-price contract, valued at $20.9m, was awarded to Sperry Marine by Naval Sea Systems Command, Washington, D.C. The contract calls for Sperry Marine to produce and deliver eight AN/BPS-16(v)5 radar sets to be installed on eight Virginia-class Block III submarines. The scope of work will include manufacturing, fabrication, assembly and testing. The AN/BPS-16(v)5 is an advanced submarine navigation radar and electronic navigation system, which provides naval electronic chart display and information system (ECDIS-N) capability running on Sperry Marine’s Voyage Management System (VMS) software.

Simrad Radar and VHF Chosen for Coast Guard Patrol Boats

Simrad has been selected to supply radar and VHF communications equipment to 100 patrol boats currently in production for the Yemen Coast Guard. Delivery and installation of the CR44 radar and RD68 dVHF radios for the first 25 boats is underway. Installation will continue throughout the year with the final patrol boat completed by the end of 2004. The CR44 multi-function radar from Simrad’s xx44/54 series of professional GPS ChartRadars, Chartplotters, ChartSounders and ChartRadarSounders has been chosen as the main navigation tool onboard. Including an easy to operate control panel with quick response keys for each function, the CR44 has been designed with user-friendly, yet advanced operation at its core.

Operating between Nassau and Harbor Island and Eleuthera in the Bahamas, M/V Bo Hengy carries passengers daily for this ferry service that provides an innovative form of transportation, inter-island in the Bahamas. Until now, the only form of transportation on this route was via air, mailboat or private vessel. Along the designated route for Bo Hengy is a treacherous three-mile section located at the northern tip of Eleuthera. Known as the Devil's Backbone, this is the sole way around the north end - the primary destination of Bo Hengy. As a result, a comprehensive risk assessment was carried out to evaluate the risks associated with operating the vessel on the inter-island route.
