Hepburn and Sons LLC team has welcomed CAPT Timothy Crone as its newest Director. CAPT Timothy Crone, USN (Ret) will serve as Hepburn’s Director, Advisory Services.CAPT Crone, a graduate of the United States Naval Academy, earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science from the US Naval Academy and completed a Master of Science in Justice, Law and Society from American University. He has also received a Master of Arts in National Security Policy and Strategic Studies from the U.S.

Steven W. Mosher, President of the Population Research Institute and expert on China, spoke yesterday at the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) headquarters in Washington, D.C. Mosher, invited as part of NAVSEA’s Distinguished Speaker Series, told the command leadership and staff that Beijing is not only making absurd territorial claims, building artificial islands and creating administrative units to bolster them, but is now militarizing these features as fast as it is able, with military-grade runways, radar facilities, surface-to-air missiles, and now military aircraft.

It was a day no one who worked on the Washington Navy Yard will ever forget. Shortly after 8 a.m., on Sept. 16, 2013, Navy contractor Aaron Alexis entered the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) headquarters building and killed 12 people while wounding four more - including two police officers. A year later, though much of the NAVSEA workforce is still displaced and many struggle to make sense of the tragic events, Washington Navy Yard employees met to remember the lives of coworkers, friends and loved ones during a short, 8 a.m. ceremony on the base.

Alion Awarded Navy Contract Valued at $73.2M to Support NAVSEA Programs for Maintenance and Modernization of 185 Surface Warfare Ships; Technology Solutions Firm to Oversee Logistics for Naval Ship Overhauls Worldwide. To help the U.S. Navy use capital resources wisely and extend the service life of ships, Alion Science and Technology, an employee-owned technology solutions company, will perform professional support services under a $73.2 million contract award. Alion’s team of experts will provide engineering and technical support across the Navy and with Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) headquarters. This support includes program management, engineering, logistics, training, lifecycle management and financial management for the Navy’s 185 surface ships.

The U.S. Navy's largest systems command, Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA), is recruiting displaced mid-career automotive engineering professionals. NAVSEA continues to need mid-career employees particularly engineers, scientists and skilled tradesmen. Positions are open at NAVSEA's headquarters and affiliated program executive offices in Washington, D.C., as well as naval warfare centers, shipyards and Navy-sponsored University Affiliated Research Centers (UARCs) across the country. The U.S. Navy began installing stern flaps in April on amphibious ships in an effort make ships more fuel efficient and save up to $450,000 in fuel costs per ship annually. USS Whidbey Island (LSD 41), the first dock landing ship to receive stern flaps, began the installation process mid-April during a scheduled maintenance availability in Norfolk, Va. Three Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) teams and an assistant project manager were among the winners of the Secretary of the Navy Environmental Award for fiscal year 2001. The Lewis and Clark (T-AKE) class ship acquisition program at NAVSEA headquarters in Washington D.C. was the winner in the Environmental Excellence in Weapons System Acquisition category. program's assistant project manager, Cmdr. Steve Markle won an individual award in the Environmental Quality category. Center, Newport (R.I.) was runner-up in the Natural Resources category. The three NAVSEA winners will next compete in the Department of Defense FY2001 Environmental Awards program. All winners will be recognized at an awards ceremony on April 30 at the Navy Memorial in Washington D.C.

The Federal Laboratory Consortium (FLC) is honoring two members of the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) corporate team for their work on a environmentally-friendly waste destruction system for use aboard ship. Jon W. Cofield of the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock (Md.) and Eugene E. Nolting from NAVSEA headquarters in Washington D.C. will receive a 2002 FLC Award for Excellence in Technology Transfer for work on the new Plasma Arc Waste Destruction System (PAWDS). The Navy developed PAWDS for burning combustible solid wastes aboard ship. A Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) was approved to develop and demonstrate a commercial version of PAWDS, which can successfully process mixed waste including paper, cardboard, plastic, cloth, wood and food.

The Naval Sea Systems Command joined more than eighty government offices and private companies at Walter Reed Army Hospital for Hiring Heroes, a one-day job fair held on June 20. Representatives from Corporate Operations, Equal Employment Opportunity Office (EEO), Program Executive Office, Integrated Warfare Systems and Team Submarine spent the day talking to potential employees, educating them about the command’s mission and its employment opportunities. “We brought thirty-seven questionnaires and resumes back from Hiring Heroes and we are now going through each one trying to match them up to open positions” said NAVSEA Human Resources Specialist Freddy Hoch.

A group of 12 reserve Sailors became plank owners on Aug. 25 for initiating the Surge Main concept at Norfolk Naval Shipyard (NNSY), where they performed a number of deckplate repair functions - seamlessly and professionally - during their annual active duty training. “We were able to hit the ground running by drawing on lessons learned from related programs at Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard (and Intermediate Maintenance Facility), and at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard(and Intermediate Maintenance Facility),” said Lt. Cmdr. Stephen Estrada, NNSY's Surge Main Program Manager. “Surge Main provides a part-time, fully qualified maintenance workforce that can be assigned whenever and wherever the Navy needs to support Fleet Readiness and the Fleet Response Plan,” Estrada explained.

The Naval Sea Systems Command’s (NAVSEA) Ship Design, Integration and Engineering Directorate and the Program Executive Officer for Aircraft Carriers (PEO Carriers) will commemorate the certification of CVN 78 ship specifications in a signing and awards ceremony to be held Sept. 5 in the NAVSEA Headquarters auditorium, Washington Navy Yard. Rear Adm. Charles H. Goddard, NAVSEA vice commander, will also present the Award of Merit for Group Achievement to the CVN 78 Design Team in recognition of this major milestone in the future aircraft design process.

The purpose of these two annual awards is to honor an engineer, scientist, or a team of engineers and/or scientists from NAVSEA headquarters or field activity, whose contributions or performance have enhanced the engineering or scientific profession. One individual or a team will be selected for each of the Engineer and Scientist of the Year Award categories. Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) Dahlgren Division engineers, working with their counterparts from other Navy commands and industry, recently completed work to make aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) ready for the ship’s first deployment. Dahlgren engineers are also providing combat systems distance support while the carrier is deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. “This is far-reaching collaboration that makes a difference in our military’s ability to fight, win and come home safely,” said NSWC Dahlgren Commander Capt.
