Navy’s Newest Amphibious Ship Named San Diego

England has named the U.S. Navy’s newest amphibious transport dock ship (LPD 22) in honor of the city of San Diego. “San Diego is home to a large number of the Pacific Fleet’s ships. For decades, our nation’s Sailors and Marines have begun their service to America at boot camps in San Diego. Thousands of military families and veterans have fallen in love with the area, and are fortunate enough to live and work in San Diego.

Navy League Comes To New York For Centennial Convention

More than 600 Navy Leaguers from around the world will be in New York City from June 28 to July 2, 2002, attending the organization’s national convention and celebrating the Centennial of the Navy League of the United States (NLUS). The Navy League is a civilian organization that supports all of the U.S. sea services – the Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and U.S.-flag Merchant Marine. For 100 years, the Navy League has been providing direct support to millions of active duty men and women and their families as well as educating elected officials and the public about the need for strong sea services. It is most appropriate that New York is the site for this centennial convention and celebration since the Navy League was founded in this city.

Laura Bush Authenticates Keel

Northrop Grumman Corporation's Newport News sector hosted a keel laying ceremony for the second Virginia-class submarine, Texas (SSN 775). Laura Bush is the Ship's Sponsor and served as the keel authenticator for the ceremony. Mrs. Bush authenticated the keel by chalking her initials onto a metal plate. Her initials were then welded and the plate will be permanently affixed to the submarine. "A mighty American submarine deserves a mighty American name," she said. Virginia-class. Texas is the second ship of the Virginia-class. "Skilled professionals will forge the newest alloys and technology into one of the most sophisticated ships in the world," said Mrs. Bush. SECNAV Energy Conservation Awards Announced

The Secretary of the Navy announced the Energy Conservation (ENCON) ship award winners for FY2003. These award winners represent Navy ships who have been singled out for outstanding execution of energy conservation measures and consistent reduction in energy consumption. Energy conservation awards were also announced for Navy shore activities and Marine Corps bases. During FY 2003, Commander, Pacific Fleet (COMPAC) and Commander, Atlantic Fleet (COMLANT) ships, even during this high level operational era, avoided the consumption of many thousands of kilowatt-hours of electricity. Using energy education, the Fleet was able to reallocate over 1,160,000 barrels of fuel, to high OPTEMPO ships.

Keel Laid for Future USS Anchorage

Shipyard workers at Northrop Grumman Ship Systems' (NGSS) Avondale Operations laid the keel for the future USS Anchorage (LPD 23) during a brief ceremony Sept. 24 at the shipyard in the New Orleans area. Anchorage is the seventh ship of the San Antonio class of amphibious transport dock ships to begin construction. The future USS Anchorage will play a vital role in Navy and Marine Corps expeditionary warfare by embarking, transporting and landing elements of an assault landing force by helicopters, vertical take-off and landing aircraft, air cushion landing craft and Expeditionary Fighting Vehicles. In 2004, then-Secretary of the Navy Gordon R. England named LPD 23 in honor of the city of Anchorage, Alaska. This is the second U.S.

First Littoral Combat Ship Christened

History was made on September 23 when the nation’s first Littoral Combat Ship, Freedom (LCS-1) – the inaugural ship in an entirely new class of U.S. Navy surface warships – was christened and launched at the Marinette Marine shipyard. The agile 377-ft. Freedom -- designed and built by a team led by Lockheed Martin -- will help the Navy defeat growing littoral, or close-to-shore, threats and provide access and dominance in coastal water battlespace. Displacing 3,000 metric tons and with a capability of reaching speeds well over 40 knots, Freedom will be a fast, maneuverable and networked surface combatant with operational flexibility to execute focused missions, such as mine warfare, anti-submarine warfare, surface warfare and humanitarian relief.

Construction of LPD 21 New York Progresses

The amphibious transport dock ship Pre Commissioning Unit (PCU) New York (LPD 21) under construction in Northrop Grumman Ship the shipyard. It is the fifth ship to be built in the San Antonio-class of amphibious ships. The bow stem is made of steel from the World Trade Centers and weighs 7.5 metric tons. New York is scheduled to be commissioned in the fall of 2008. Carrier Named in Honor of Former President

Secretary of the Navy Gordon R. England will name the Navy's tenth Nimitz class aircraft carrier in honor of World War II Naval Aviator and former President of the United States George Herbert Walker Bush during a ceremony today at 3 p.m. in the Pentagon Auditorium, room 5A1070.
