USMMA Acceptance Day Ceremony and Parade

The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) will welcome 237 “plebe candidates” of the Class of 2017 into the Regiment of Midshipmen as they take the Academy oath administrated by Rear Admiral Helis during Acceptance Day Ceremony and Parade, Saturday, September 7, 2013 at 9:30 a.m. They will be sworn in as U.S. Navy Reserve midshipmen by Vice Admiral Robin R. Navy Reserve Launches Next Phase of Forcewide Communication

Communicating with more than 100,000 Navy reservists and other key constituents worldwide has been a daunting task over the years. However, the commander of Navy Reserve Forces Command (CNRFC), launched 21st century technology June 25 to solve an age-old challenge. Reservists and others interested in the Navy Reserve Force can sign up for CNRFC’s list server for reserve-related information via e-mail. The list server, a computer server designed to automatically manage mailing lists with thousands of subscribers, will replace the current force e-mail distribution list (FEDL), which currently uses large distribution lists in the Microsoft Outlook program to send information to 8,000 recipients. People can subscribe for up to 13 e-mail groups at https://listserv.navyreserve.navy.mil.

USS New Olreans Commisioned in Namesake City

Sailors from USS New Orleans (LPD 18) and Marines from the 14th Regiment manned the rails of the San Antonio class ship March 10, bringing it to life during a commissioning ceremony in the ship's namesake city. The celebration of the first ship to be built and commissioned in her namesake city began with a 19 gun salute. The ship is the fourth ship to bear the name New Orleans and is the second ship to be commissioned in its class. New Orleans mayor, Ray Nagin, spoke about the strong connection the ship and the city share. “I believe the ship and the city have a lot in common. We both survived Hurricane Katrina and we have both rebuilt after the storm,” said Nagin. The ship’s commanding officer, Cmdr. John B.
