There is an old adage that states that a repair yard can economically build new ships, but a new construction yard should never touch ship repair jobs. In my experience there is a lot of truth to that statement, and it does not mean that new construction yards are run by less capable people; it simply means that ship construction and ship repair and conversion are fundamentally different business models. Ship construction uses a script, while ship repair and conversion is improvisation. I will not drive the theater comparison completely home, but it has some validity.

Dennis Bryant provided a link to a story about the USCG Cutter Bear in his March 18, 2020 newsletter. It is a great story about a great ship with a great Captain (Michael Healy) and a great crew. It shows that the right combination of ship and crew can perform miracles.This one ship, its Captain (and his wife who often shipped with him), and its crew did so many things so well that it has become the stuff of legends. According to the Port of Gothenburg, an important milestone is reached in the largest development project at the Port of Gothenburg in 40 years.The first phase of the water-based work has now been completed and construction of the 220,000 square metre terminal is due to move on to the next phase. National Shipping Company of Saudi Arabia (Bahri) announced the transportation of the first chemical shipment from Aramco Trading Company (ATC), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Saudi Aramco that trades refined, liquid chemical and polymer products, via ‘NCC Amal,’ a 45,000 DWT Bahri chemical tanker which left Port of Rabigh heading to China. The shipment, which contains 25,000 metric tonnes of paraxylene (PX) and 20,000 metric tonnes of monoethylene glycol (MEG), marks the completion of Phase II of the Petro Rabigh Company (PRC) project, which was celebrated at a special ceremony in the presence of Abdullah Aldubaikhi, CEO of Bahri‎, Nasser D. Al-Mahasher, CEO of PRC, Ibrahim Q. Al-Buainain, CEO of ATC, and other representatives from the three companies.

Japanese shipping company Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) has signed a capital and business alliance agreement with chemical tank specialist logistics provider Nippon Concept Corporation (NCC). "MOL and NCC concluded the agreement with the objective of developing a comprehensive two-way strategic partnership including both partners' group companies, and steadily enhancing their businesses," said a statement from the company. The Port of Salalah completed its first ship to ship transfer operation (STST) at Salalah anchorage recently as part of the port’s expanding service offering in 2018. . The new service was performed by Fendercare Marine which transferred vegetable oil between the vessels NCC Nasma to Ariana while both were in the harbor anchorage. The start of construction of the Stockholm Norvik Port and Norvik Logistics and Business Park was celebrated on 16th September. Coal mining giant Glencore has now applied to have the competition watchdog oversee pricing in the  newly privatised Port of Newcastle, reports  The Sydney Morning Herald. The NSW port is hiking some shipping charges up to 60 percent after its $1.75 billion privatisation last year. Glencore has made the application to the National Competition Council, describing the shipping channels in the Port of Newcastle as a natural 'bottleneck' monopoly. The maritime sector, including, ports, shipping industry and merchant navy in India is expecting the government would allocate a substantial amount of provisions and sops in the forthcoming union budget. Indian Shipping Industry has the potential to ignite growth, both through a trade resurgence and development of ancillary businesses, the industry sources say. The shipping ministry has already discussed with the finance ministry for help to restructure stressed shipping industry loans and tax exemptions to the debt-laden sector. The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk christened a larger, “greener” new research vessel on Friday, September 26 in preparation for launching a new era in examining, monitoring and teaching about Long Island Sound. The $2.7 million environmentally friendly research vessel, Spirit of the Sound, was christened and officially named during a ceremony at the Aquarium dock. Breaking a bottle on her hull was godmother of the boat, Astrid Heidenreich of Greenwich. The boat will reportedly be the first research vessel in the U.S. running on hybrid-electric propulsion.
