The Virginia Port Authority Board (VPA) of Commissioners today introduced Stephen Edwards as the next leader of The Port of Virginia. He succeeds John F. Reinhart who for the last seven years has led the VPA as its CEO and executive director.Edwards has extensive experience in the global transportation industry most recently as the president and CEO of TraPac, LLC (TraPac), which operates container terminals in Los Angeles, Oakland and Florida. His tenure with the VPA begins on January 19, 2021.“I am delighted to be joining the Virginia Port Authority team in January,” Edwards said.

As of September 2017 Aat Hoorn has joined Simwave as manager engine room and high voltage simulators. These state of the art simulators comprise various engine room models presented on workstations, big views as well as a full mission engine room environment. Besides a Certificate of Competence Chief Engineer All Ships, Hoorn carries a professional Master’s degree in Education. Prior to joining Simwave Hoorn worked at various (managing) positions at a.o. Nedlloyd and AVR waste management center.

Denmark's Maersk Line is fighting to remain the world's no.1 container shipping carrier as a wave of mergers and acquisitions, particularly in Asia, creates new challengers trying to grab a bigger share of a depressed market. Maersk itself hasn't made a major acquisition for more than a decade but says it might be open to "the right opportunity", although doubters believe such deals risk accumulating ships without securing enough customers. A unit of oil and shipping group A.P. Moller-Maersk , the line has a 15 percent share of the overall container market.

DP World London Gateway Port has appointed James Leeson to the role of Head of Port Commercial following the announcement that Tabare Dominguez is to become Commercial Director at DP World Vancouver. Leeson started in the role this month, bringing with him more than 20 years of international experience in the shipping and ports industry. He was most recently Head of Commercial for Associated British Ports (ABP) Humber region, covering the ports of Immingham, Hull, Grimsby and Goole.

essDOCS announced that Non-Executive Board Member, Andre Toet, has been appointed Chairman of the Board of Directors, succeeding Barry Williams, who is standing down after chairing the board since 2013, having previously served a term as Chairman from 2006 to 2011. Andre Toet possesses over 30 years of maritime industry experience and has held numerous supervisory board positions, of which PortInfolink (subsequently Portbase), directly supported his previous role as Non-Executive Board Member for essDOCS. He has served as Managing Director of P&O Nedlloyd Europe, CEO of Maersk Central Europe, COO of the Port of Rotterdam and, since 2011, CEO for Sohar Industrial Port Company in Oman.

Hans Nagtegaal (49) has been appointed the new Head of Containers at the Port of Rotterdam Authority. He is a highly experienced manager from the world of shipping and logistics, who enjoyed a successful career at P&O NedLloyd (in China, among other places), ultimately becoming director of the NileDutch Africa Line, via Safmarine. Hans Nagtegaal succeeds Joyce Bliek. The Port Authority has created a new position, in which Joyce Bliek will focus on improving and streamlining digital communication and the exchange of information in the supply chain. The increases in scale in container shipping result in peak volumes and cause a lot of stress in logistics, partly because a great deal of the information needed is fragmented across this chain.

The Liberian Registry has established a regional office in Istanbul, Turkey, as part of the continued expansion of its global presence in major centers of international shipping and trade. New Operations General Manager, Jos Goris, to bring 20 years of experience with top firms including Damen, Maersk and Shell. ASRY, a ship and rig repair yard in the Arabian Gulf, has appointed Jos Goris as the new General Manager of the Operations division, effective October 1. Goris brings more than 20 years worth of shipping experience with global leaders such as Damen, Maersk and Shell, with more than 12 years of that being in ship repair yards across Asia and the Americas.

Hapag-Lloyd announced changes in its Executive Board resulting from departure of Michael Behrendt and Ulrich Kranich; Anthony J. Rolf Habben Jansen, who has been a member of the Hapag-Lloyd AG's Executive Board since April 1, has assumed the position of CEO effective July 1. He succeeds Michael Behrendt, who left the Hapag-Lloyd AG's Executive Board as scheduled on June 30, as did COO Ulrich Kranich. The new COO is Anthony J. Firmin who joined the Executive Board today after 19 years at the company. Peter Ganz continues as CFO, a position he has held since April 2009.

At its meeting today, the Supervisory Board of Hapag-Lloyd AG has set the course at an early stage for maintaining continuity in the Executive Board of Germany’s largest liner shipping company. Rolf Habben-Jansen will succeed Chief Executive Officer Michael Behrendt, who is set to leave in the middle of next year. Habben-Jansen has been appointed to the Executive Board of the company with effect from April 1, 2014 and will assume the position of Chairman of the Executive Board on July 1, 2014. Habben-Jansen is a successful and experienced manager in the logistics sector. Having held positions at the Royal Nedlloyd Group and at DHL, he became CEO of the freight forwarding group Damco NV in The Hague in 2009.

The European Port Community Systems Association (EPCSA) is determined to keep its focus on the important issues and maintain close contact with officers and decision-makers in the European Commission, according to the association’s new chairman and vice-chairman. Alan Long, managing director of Felixstowe-based Maritime Cargo Processing (MCP), has been appointed chairman of EPCSA, and Piet Jan ten Thije, strategy and business director of Rotterdam-based Portbase, is the new vice chairman of the association.

Harrold van der Meer has joined the KOTUG group and will succeed Dorus Knegtel, the current COO & Vice President Business Development. Electronic Shipping Solutions, a provider of electronic shipping documents, announces four senior appointments to its main Board. These new members bring experience from the shipping, ports, legal and finance sectors to ESS and underpin its expansion into the container shipping market, following the successful roll-out of the ESS CargoDocs solution for electronic bills of lading in the bulk liquid markets. Well-known names from the ports and liner shipping sector, André Toet and Nigel Pusey, join legal expert Noel Buttigieg-Scicluna on the board. Finance specialist Robert Mai succeeds James Fields, who is stepping down. Toet brings 25 years of maritime experience at P&O Nedlloyd, Maersk and Port of Rotterdam to the ESS board.

The Containerization & Intermodal Institute (CII) will present the 2010 East Coast-based Connie Awards to J. Russell Bruner, Chairman and CEO of Maersk Inc. and James I. Newsome III, President and CEO of the South Carolina State Ports Authority. The evening event on Tuesday, December 7 at The Newark Club will also commemorate the 50th anniversary of CII. The Newark Club event is in addition to the West Coast-based Connie Awards on September 30 in Long Beach, CA, honoring Ron Widdows and Jon Hemingway. CII holds two Connie events each year to accommodate industry leaders on both coasts. Each recipient is being honored for his significant influence in containerization in worldwide trade and transportation, according to Allen Clifford, CII President.

The International Ship Recycling Association has appointed maritime expert Arjen Uytendaal as Director. The Association was founded in 2007 by a group of stakeholders in the ship recycling industry made up of Processing Yards, Classification Societies and a Ship Owner. In order to achieve their goal of promoting green ship recycling - as opposed to the traditional beaching - the organization is now ready for the next step. Arjen Uytendaal, former P&O Nedlloyd director and now independent maritime professional, will be tasked to promote I.S.R.A. among all stakeholders. “It is extremely important that I.S.R.A is recognized as the single authority representing all recycling yards in the world, working to the latest I.M.O.

Maersk Line announced the extension of its Far East - West Africa FEW1 service to include Shanghai and Ningbo in China. Maersk Line offers direct calls to the West African ports of Lome (Togo), Cotonou (Benin), and Pointe Noire (Congo). The new FEW1 rotation is: Shanghai (China), Ningbo (China), Nansha (China), Hong Kong (Hong Kong), Tanjung Pelepas (Malaysia), Lome (Togo), Cotonou (Benin) and Pointe Noire (Congo). The first call in Shanghai will be the Maersk Norwich (voyage 0901), which will arrive on 11 March 2009. Maersk Line also announced a series of enhancements and adjustments to its Europe - Middle East & South Asia network. China Shipping’s Xin Chong Quing is now the second carrier from the Far East to call at Port Everglades regularly. China Shipping Container Lines (CSCL), part of the PEXS vessel-sharing consortium, is the second carrier from the Far East to make Broward County’s Port Everglades part of its regular service. An appointed selection committee unanimously chose Mediterranean Shipping Company S.A. (MSC) to negotiate a lease and operating agreement for a 36-acre dockside container terminal at Broward County’s Port Everglades. Final approval is subject to consent from the Broward County Board of County Commissioners, the governing authority for Port Everglades. This terminal is expected to generate approximately one-million tons of cargo annually with two weekly services at Port Everglades, according to MSC officials. MSC, of Geneva, Switzerland is a privately owned shipping line, founded in 1970. The company has grown rapidly to become one of the leading global shipping lines.
