Thousands Rally in Australia Against Potential Submarine Base

Thousands of people rallied on Saturday against a future nuclear-powered submarine base at Port Kembla in eastern Australia as part of the A$368 billion ($244.1 billion) AUKUS defense pact with the United States and Britain.The second-largest coal export port in New South Wales state is the Defense Department’s preferred site for a new east-coast submarine base, according to state broadcaster ABC.Protesters carrying trade union banners and flags marched down the main street to voice their opposition to a base in the town of around 5…

VIDEO: U.S. Offshore Wind Opportunities Abound for Both Local and Foreign Firms

The U.S. government has recently announced plans to promote offshore wind, with a goal to have 30 gigawatts (GW) of offshore wind capacity installed by 2030, and a whopping 110GW of offshore wind by 2050. It has also committed to supporting the development of a sustainable local offshore wind supply chain, which is set to benefit from $136 billion expected to be spent on U.S. offshore wind development in the U.S. within this decade, as estimated by World Energy Reports. Still, it will take some time to build the local supply capacity, meaning foreign firms will benefit from the U.S.

Newcastle Bulk Terminal Reaches Key Milestone

Australia’s new east coast supply chain alternative Port of Newcastle has marked an important milestone in the development of the Newcastle Bulk Terminal.A press release from the company said that the dismantling of the old ship unloaders is now complete, with bulk cargo hoppers now in place to provide continuity of trade while the new ship unloader and conveyor system is constructed.The old ship unloaders at the Kooragang 2 berth have been a feature of the Walsh Point precinct since 1968. The two rail mounted ship unloaders were established at what was then known as 'Rotten Row' to handle dry bulk products including fertiliser, rock phosphatic, ores and meals.

LOC Expands to Australia's East Coast

London Offshore Consultants (LOC), a global marine and engineering consultant for the shipping and offshore energy sectors, announces plans to increase its presence in Australia. Identifying a strategic growth plan which allows the group to maintain quality and improve client response time, satellite operations, firstly in Sydney, and then the surrounding region, will be opened to support the existing operation in Perth. The expansion announcement comes in the same month as LOC celebrates its 25th anniversary in Australia.

Willard Marine Hires New East Coast Director

Willard Marine, Inc. announced Monday that David “Smokey” Glover will join its east coast Virginia Beach facility as Director of Operations. Glover’s career in the maritime industry dates back to 1974 when he completed a four-year apprenticeship as marine machinist for Norfolk Naval Shipyard. He went on to work as both a shipbuilder and operational manager with SUPSHIP Portsmouth and Bluewater Yacht Sales before dedicating 13 years to the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Combatant Craft Division (NSWC CCD) as a Mechanical Engineer Technician.

Labor Union Summit Focuses on Automation Issue

The ILWU and ILA recently met in Washington, D.C.: first item on agenda was report on progress of East Coast USA contract negotiations. The meeting was attended also by ITF President and Maritime Union of Australia (MUA) National Secretary Paddy Crumlin and ITF Maritime Coordinator Steve Cotton. The first item of business was a report from ILA President Harold Daggett on the progress of the New East Coast contract, particularly on the outcome of negotiations on the introduction of automation to the terminals covered under the contract. The ILA President reported that job security for displaced ILA members, including retraining into new maintenance jobs, was central to any agreed outcome.

MOL Establishes New East Coast Service

MOL will soon be initiating a new direct service between the East Coast of South America and the U.S. MOL will be replacing its current AXL Service with the Americas Container Express (ACX) Service. The ACX will improve port coverage on the East Coast Americas trade by adding calls at Buenos Aires (Argentina), Salvador (Brazil), and Baltimore (Maryland, U.S.). The new ACX service will make its first northbound call to Brazil in mid-April. MOL will phase out the AXL service, which will make its last northbound call at Santos on April 13, 2007, allowing for a seamless transition to the new ACX.
