Rhode Island Fast Ferry's MTU Diesels Saving Fuel
'Ava Pearl,' a new catamaran operated by Rhode Island Fast Ferry, is fitted with fuel-efficient MTU Series 4000 engines. The 34-meter passenger vessel, designed by Incat Crowther and built by Gladding-Hearn Shipbuilding, makes three daily round-trips between North Kingstown, R.I., and Oak Bluffs on Martha’s Vineyard, Mass., a one-way distance of 52 miles. In the first two months of operation, the 150-passenger Ava Pearl logged more than 18,700 sea-miles and the fuel savings have added up.
Gladding-Hearn Delivers Third Launch to Md Pilots
Gladding-Hearn Shipbuilding, Duclos Corporation, has delivered a new pilot boat, the third launch for the Maryland pilots, built by the Somerset, Mass., shipyard. Designed by C. Raymond Hunt & Associates, the new Chesapeake Class, all-aluminum pilot boat measures 52.5 ft overall, with a 16.6-ft beam and 4.7-ft draft, and has a top speed of 25 knots. The deep-V hull is powered by twin Detroit Diesel Series 60 engines, each delivering 600 Bhp at 2100 rpm, with Twin Disc MG5114A gear boxes. The engines turn 5-blade Brutons, NiBrAl propellers through three-inch shafts.
