US ACE Connecticut Dredging Contract for Cashman
Cashman Dredging and Marine Contracting Co., Quincy, Mass. has been awarded a $8,238,900 firm-fixed-price, non-option eligible, non-multi-year contract by the Department of Defense for maintenance dredging at Norwalk and New Haven, Conn. Performance location is Norwalk and New Haven, Conn., and funding is from fiscal 2013 operations and maintenance Army funds. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers - New England District, Concord, Mass., is the contracting activity (W912WJ-13-C-0014).
Battelle Wins $15 Million USACE Contract
Five-year contract provides environmental expertise for maintaining the nation's waterways. Battelle has won a five-year, $15 million contract to support and consult with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), New England District, North Atlantic Division.Battelle will provide technical expertise in support of the District's mission for maintaining the nation's waterways, specifically focusing on contaminated sediments, restoration, and remediation. The indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity (IDIQ) contract for USACE also calls for Battelle to support environmental assessments and policy decisions and help with resource management in the North Atlantic Division.
Maine Maritime Academy Training Ship Master to Retire
Dr. William J. Brennan, president of Maine Maritime Academy (MMA), announced that Captain Laurence “Larry” Wade, master of the college’s training ship, will retire in 2011. Brennan’s announcement came at the conclusion of the college’s 5th Annual Celebration of Achievement awards dinner held on the college campus. Wade and his wife, Deanna, were both present at the event. In his announcement, Brennan praised Wade for his contributions to the college’s at-sea training program and his ongoing commitment to the furtherance of the college.
USACE Deploys Data Buoy Off R.I. Coast
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), New England District, and the Rhode Island Coastal Resources Management Council (CRMC) have partnered to perform an extensive study of the shoreline in southern Rhode Island. This study, known as the Rhode Island Regional Sediment Management (RSM) Plan, is a multi-year program focused on developing a plan for managing sand as a resource rather than as a waste product. The foundation of this study is numerical modeling which is highly dependent on site specific wave data. As part of this study, a significant level of data collection, surveying and numerical modeling will be performed. Currently deployed wave buoys do not provide the wave data that is necessary to conduct this study.
9/11 Heroes: Corps of Engineers' Boat Crews
Immediately after the second tower of the World Trade Center collapsed Sept. 11, 2001, members of the Corps of Engineers' fleet were underway. Stationed along the Hudson River for a Coast Guard boat-safety class, the Corps’ boats from the Philadelphia and New York districts became taxis to safety for people trying to flee the scene. “Everyone volunteered to help. Without a second thought, they placed themselves on duty,” said Joe Meyers from the USACE’s New York district. In all, they ferried 2,300 people off the island. “When we arrived, the people on the pier had a deep stare and were covered in dust. They were afraid to leave and afraid to stay,” said Tony Hans from the New York district. Three marinas were set up at Caven’s Point, N.J., to receive the passengers.
