HII’s Newport News Shipbuilding Announces Big Hiring Push

Global defense and technologies company HII announced Tuesday that the company’s Newport News Shipbuilding division plans to hire approximately 5,000 people this year to meet the shipbuilding needs of the Navy. The shipyard anticipates hiring nearly 21,000 people within the next decade as HII fulfills orders for U.S. aircraft carriers and submarines.“We at NNS are driven to support the men and women in uniform, to serve the nation, by delivering great ships,” said Xavier Beale, vice president of Human Resources and Trades for Newport News Shipbuilding. “This is not just a job.

Abu Dhabi Ports, Allianz Marine form Offshore Logistics JV

IMI Shipyard Inks VLCC Order with HHI

Saudi Arabia’s International Maritime Industries (IMI) has signed a vessel purchase agreement (VPA) with the National Shipping Company of Saudi Arabia (Bahri) and a subsequent sub-contract agreement with South Korean shipbuilder Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) to build one very large crude carrier (VLCC).Hyundai Heavy will transfer architectural designs and related technological know-how for the building of very large crude carriers (VLCCs) to IMI. Bahri Orders First VLCCs from IMI

Bahri, the world's largest owner and operator of very large crude carriers, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to build its first very large crude carrier (VLCC) at the International Maritime Industries (IMI) yard in Saudi Arabia.The agreement signed with IMI and Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI), one of the partners in IMI, sees Bahri committing the new mega-shipyard its first order before the end of July 2019.Following the placing of the order, IMI will engage HHI as a sub-contractor to build the vessel in South Korea. Wavepiston Puts Renolit Films to the Test

With its “Film Instead of Paint” concept RENOLIT is exploring new horizons in the maritime sector, as the company now plans to enter the renewable energy market with its films. The first step has been made with the use of the flock-film RENOLIT SEAL for an innovative enterprise in Denmark, where the company Wavepiston has developed at similarly-named wave-powered energy generation project. A steel cable is stretched between two anchored buoys. Energy collectors developed by Wavepiston are attached to this cable at intervals of five to six meters.

Louisiana LNG Project Gets Important Non-FTA Export Approval

Cameron LNG, one of the most advanced US LNG export projects, (promoted by GDF SUEZ as a shareholder and a capacity holder), has been granted conditional non-Free Trade Agreement (FTA) approval from the US Department of Energy (DOE). The Non-FTA agreement will enable GDF SUEZ to export LNG from the Cameron LNG project, in Louisiana, into countries that have not signed a FTA with the USA. GDF Suez inform that the project received  FTA approval in January 2012. The Non-FTA approval will enable them to sell the LNG produced by the Cameron plant, to a much wider range of partners around the world.

Security Studies Program Opens

A new distance learning course in Security Studies equips you for a world of career opportunities with flexible part-time study options from Postgraduate Certificate to Master of Science. More Public Safety Dive Teams Employ Side Scan Sonar

More public safety dive teams are adding sonar to assist in their underwater search and recovery operations. Side scan is the ideal tool for these operations because it produces detailed images of the underwater environment regardless of water clarity. In addition, the sonar is able to search large areas quickly, scanning several hundred feet of ocean, lake, or river bottom with each pass of the boat. The sonar does this by transmitting an acoustic beam from a towfish which sweeps the bottom and reflects off any objects lying there.
