According to figures released this week, 50,974 twenty-foot-equivalent units moved through the Terminal in April, besting the previous monthly record of 48,594 TEUs in March of 2016. The two-month total of 99,568 TEUs is up 6.1 percent, compared to same two months in 2015. Surging container volumes come on the heels of higher overall cargo volumes in 2015.

The Board of Commissioners of the Port of New Orleans joined a host of elected officials and industry partners today to dedicate the Port’s new $25 million Mississippi River Intermodal Terminal. The terminal, made possible by a $16.7 million federal transportation TIGER grant, has a capacity of moving 160,000 twenty-foot-equivalent units (TEUs) per year by rail. “This new terminal provides a highly efficient option for our customers moving cargo via rail,” said Gary LaGrange, Port President and CEO. The Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) grant provided about 68 percent of the total funding for the terminal.

The Port of New Orleans and CN signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) that will see the parties develop greater supply chain efficiencies aimed at drawing more container traffic through the Port to North American markets. “We and our Port of New Orleans gateway partners have a mutual interest in ensuring the competitive and efficient movement of container goods through the gateway and growing its market share,” said JJ Ruest, CN’s executive vice president and chief marketing officer.

The Port of New Orleans achieved record container volumes in 2014 thanks in part to the addition of new shipping services and an uptick in the national economy contributed. According to year-end totals, 490,526 twenty-foot-equivalent units moved through the Port’s Napoleon Avenue Container Terminal during the 12 months, an 8.8 percent increase over the 2013 total of 451,057. “Strong export markets, primarily for chemical and agriculture products, together with new inbound customers such as Chiquita contributed to record container volumes,” said Port President and CEO Gary LaGrange.

1,066-Foot Ship Ties Record for Longest Container Ship to Berth at Port. At 1,066 feet long, Mediterranean Shipping Company’s MSC Judith arrived at the Port of New Orleans’ Napoleon Avenue Container Terminal Saturday tying the Port’s record for the longest container ship to berth in New Orleans. New Orleans Terminal worked the Panamanian-flagged container ship, which has a capacity of more than 8,000 twenty-foot-equivalent-units. While the Port has hosted ships with more TEU capacity, the ship is the longest container ship to berth at the Port by about 60 feet.

ZIM Integrated Shipping Ltd. formally introduced a new weekly container shipping service to the Port of New Orleans' Napoleon Avenue Container Terminal. The Caribbean Gulf Express, or CGX service, offers weekly service to Caucedo, Dominican Republic; Altamira and Vera Cruz, Mexico; and Kingston, Jamaica. The CGX service serves all major trade routes, including Asia through its hub in Kingston, Jamaica. Haifa, Israel-based ZIM employs five container ships in the CGX service. Stolt-Nielsen Limited : Stolthaven New Orleans Flooded following Hurricane Isaac Landfall. Stolt-Nielsen Limited (Oslo Børs: SNI) announced today that hurricane Isaac made landfall in southern Louisiana in the early hours of August 29, 2012 as a category 1 hurricane. The hurricane has caused serious flooding at our Stolthaven New Orleans terminal located at Braithwaite resulting from failure of the levee surge protection system with parts of the terminal being under as much as seven feet of water. All personnel on-site are reported to be safe, and we have currently no reports of any environmental issues or failure of product containment systems.

The was joined by two of its rail partners in dedicating the Napoleon Intermodal Rail Yard, a new facility permitting efficient ship to rail transfer of cargo containers at the Napoleon Avenue Container Terminal. The rail yard provides a new link for NAFTA commerce. Its dedication was announced as U.S. President George Bush, Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Mexican President Felipe Calderon meet in for the annual North American Leadership Summit. CN, with a rail network spanning the U.S. Midwest and , is the first Class 1 railroad to serve the new rail yard via its switching agent, the New Orleans Public Belt Railroad. Stolt-Nielsen S.A. will enter into a new five-year $150 million credit facility to be fully underwritten by DnB NOR Bank ASA. The facility will be secured by a pledge of the Company's Stolthaven Houston and Stolthaven New Orleans terminal-storage assets. The facility will be used to prepay an existing $64 million credit facility on Stolthaven Houston, which is scheduled to mature in January 2005, and for general corporate purposes. The transaction is expected to close by the end of July 2004. "SNSA continues to strengthen its liquidity position," said Niels G. Stolt-Nielsen, chief executive officer of SNSA. "The completion of this latest transaction is expected to provide us with sufficient liquidity for the foreseeable future."
