A containership that was leaking fuel oil through a crack in its hull has left its mooring in Bayonne, N.J. to undergo repairs at different a facility within the Port of New York/New Jersey, the U.S. Coast Guard said.The Liberian-flagged YM Mandate had stopped leaking last week after the spill was reported from the 300 meter long, 6,572 TEU capacity vessel on Tuesday.The Coast Guard said box ship departed the Global Container Terminal Saturday after bunker fuel was removed from the affected tank, the ship was cleaned and a dive survey confirmed no additional damage.

Senesco Marine, LLC, a holding of the Reinauer Transportation Company of New York, has been contracted by Covanta 4Recovery, L.P., a subsidiary of Covanta Energy Corporation, to construct six 150 foot container transport barges fitted with cell guides that are designed to carry 48 sealed waste containers each. When completed the barges will service two new marine municipal solid waste (MSW) transfer stations located in Queens and Manhattan, owned by the City of New York and to be operated by the City's Department of Sanitation.

The contract area for this project is along Newark Bay, New Jersey and the Arthur Kill, Borough of Staten Island, New York, N.Y. Staten Island, N.Y. - New York Container Terminal Inc. (NYCT), a full-service ocean container and intermodal cargo-handling facility in the Port of New York and New Jersey, today announced that its Centralized Examination Site (CES) has handled more than 2,000 container inspections since opening in January. The NYCT facility is meeting all U.S. Customs and Border Protection requirements to operate as a Comprehensive CES and attracting new customers to use the facility from customers across the entire port. A Comprehensive CES performs all inspections which could be ordered on an ocean container entering the United States, including x-ray scanning, agricultural checks and intensive cargo exams. The Containerization & Intermodal Institute (CII) will present the 2010 East Coast-based Connie Awards to J. Russell Bruner, Chairman and CEO of Maersk Inc. and James I. Newsome III, President and CEO of the South Carolina State Ports Authority. The evening event on Tuesday, December 7 at The Newark Club will also commemorate the 50th anniversary of CII. The Newark Club event is in addition to the West Coast-based Connie Awards on September 30 in Long Beach, CA, honoring Ron Widdows and Jon Hemingway. CII holds two Connie events each year to accommodate industry leaders on both coasts. Donjon Marine, Co., Inc. announced that President and CEO J. Arnold Witte has joined the Board of Trustees of the Noble Maritime Collection, a museum and study center located in a former dormitory at the famous retirement home for mariners, Sailors' Snug Harbor in Staten Island, N.Y. British shipping giant P&O is poised to take over operations at New York's largest container terminal, the Sunday Telegraph newspaper reported. It said P&O would pay $650 million for a 30-year concession on the terminal at Port Newark, which is the second largest container port in the U.S. by throughput. U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Agriculture Specialists conducted nearly 5 million agricultural cargo inspections last fiscal year, up more than 16 percent over the year before. Many shipments get routine inspections; others are targeted for closer scrutiny for various reasons. UPI has reported that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has launched a $1.2b plan to deploy more advanced radiological screening devices at U.S. ports. By 2011, the DHS expects to have 1,400 of the next-generation screeners deployed at both ports and border crossings. The new detectors will range in cost from $350,000 to about $500,000 each, compared to the $180,000 for those currently employed. Officials, however, expect that the more-expensive systems will reduce the number of containers flagged for more-complete inspections each year from 821,000 to 15,000, the report said. The DHS also announced a plan to deploy the new devices in and around U.S. cities, and Oxford said work on a $3 million pilot deployment program has begun in New York City, GSN said.
