Texas A&M Maritime Academy's New Training Ship Named

The Texas A&M Maritime Academy said it has been notified by the U.S. Department of Transportation Maritime Administration (MARAD) that the National Security Multi-Mission Vessel (NSMV) expected to arrive on its Galveston campus in 2025 will be named the Lone Star State.The ship, which is slated to be built by Philly Shipyard, is the fourth in a new series of vessels specifically designed to support both maritime training needs and disaster response capabilities.“The Galveston…

Congress Funds Training Ship for Texas A&M

Congress on Monday approved $390 million to fund construction of a fourth National Security Multi-Mission Vessel (NSMV). The state-of-the-art ship will be assigned to the Texas A&M Maritime Academy at Texas A&M University at Galveston, serving as a training platform for future merchant mariners and offer a critical disaster resource in the Gulf Coast.Scheduled for delivery in 2025, the new NSMV for Texas A&M is the fourth in a series of five ships to replace the aging and outdated fleet of training vessels currently used by state maritime academies.

Captain Nanartowich Joins Mid-Atlantic Maritime Academy

Mid-Atlantic Maritime Academy’s President and CEO, Arthur Goldman, announced that Unlimited Master Ed Nanartowich will be the Chief Operating Officer of the school. Captain Nanartowich joined Mid-Atlantic Maritime as an advanced course instructor following his retirement as a Senior Master with the Navy’s Military Sealift Command. Captain Nanartowich sailed as Master from 1981 to 2008 with 24 commands within the diversified MSC fleet. His commands as civilian shipmaster included tankers, cargo ships, cable-layers, scientific support ships, ocean-going tugs and others. The most meaningful command for him was the humanitarian outreach mission of the USS Comfort. A number of honors were bestowed on him at his retirement from this distinguished career of over 34 years.

Great Lakes Education Conference Wrap Up

The Bayfront Center for Maritime Studies (BCMS) hosted the first ever Great Lakes Region Primary and Secondary Maritime Education Conference. The conference was held at the BCMS waterfront campus on May 11th and 12th, 2009, in Erie, Pennsylvania. Merchant Marine Highlighted in D-Day Museum Activities in New Orleans

The vital role of the American merchant marine during World War II will be highlighted in New Orleans this week during events marking the first major expansion of the National D-Day Museum. Merchant marine veterans will participate in a parade and other events honoring the men and women who fought for victory during World War II. In addition, a modern cargo ship, which stands at ready to support today's armed forces will be open for tours. Maintained by the U.S. Department of Transportation's Maritime Administration, the Ready Reserve Force ship CAPE KENNEDY, like its World War II predecessors, is crewed by merchant mariners. The bands of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and the State University of New York Maritime Academy will participate in the December 7 parade in downtown New Orleans.

MPRI Sells Liquid Cargo Handling Simulators

MPRI, a leader in maritime simulator products, services and turnkey training facilities, sold its SAfeCargo Liquid Cargo Handling Simulators (LCHS) in some of the world's top maritime academies, including its first three in the United States. Within the last two months SAfeCargo simulators have been adopted by the Massachusetts Maritime Academy in Buzzards Bay, the State University of New York Maritime Academy in the Bronx and Belgium-based Antwerp Maritime Academy. In November the RTM STAR Center in Dania Beach, Fla., will also install the system. "We purchased the SAfeCargo Liquid Cargo Handling Simulators from MPRI primarily for their ease of use by both the students and the instructors," said Craig Dalton, Captain, Massachusetts Maritime Academy.

MARAD Ships Help in Hurricane Recovery

Eight ships from MARAD’s National Defense Reserve Fleet are serving in the national effort to recover from Hurricane Katrina. Two Ready Reserve Force ships have stood firm in New Orleans, their home port. The Cape Kennedy has provided office space for the operations of the Port of New Orleans; the Cape Knox has supported that effort, and is now fully crewed and ready to sail to support cleanup efforts. Three state maritime academy training ships will provide housing and support for port workers and petroleum industry workers, and three more Ready Reserve Force ships will help underpin the area’s economic recovery. The crane ship Diamond State is in New Orleans; the crane ship Equality State will sail on Tuesday for Gulfport, MS; both aim to help restore the cities’ port operations.
