Dozens of oil tankers used by Russia have stopped sailing under the Liberian and Marshall Islands flags in recent weeks after the United States ramped up sanctions enforcement on ships linked to those registries, according to shipping data and interviews with industry and government officials.The shift reflects the close relationship between the U.S. and the flag administration companies of Liberia and the Marshall Islands, which are headquartered not in their home countries, but in Virginia, just miles from Washington D.C. and within the jurisdiction of U.S.

U.S. oil companies are working around a century-old shipping law to supply fuel to the U.S. East Coast, according to data from Refinitiv and oil trading sources, as high demand for gasoline and global disruptions in fuel markets sent prices higher.Traders are increasingly sending unfinished gasoline components from the Gulf Coast to Buckeye Partners LP’s terminal in the Bahamas, also known as Borco, where they are blended into finished gasoline to be sent to the U.S. East Coast. The uncommon trade is a sign of heavy demand for products up and down the coast, home of some of the nation's largest consumer markets.The trade represents a legal workaround to the Jones Act, which requires goods moved between U.S. ports to be carried by ships built domestically and staffed by U.S.

The Ocean Shipping Reform Act of 2022 (the Act) was signed by President Biden on Thursday, June 16, 2022. The long term fixes, which require Federal Maritime Commission rule-making, establishes additional requirements requiring the FMC to issue rules related to certain fee assessments, prohibited practices, and establishment of a shipping registry, and prohibited conduct for ocean carriers. It further authorizes the FMC under certain circumstances to issue an emergency order requiring common carriers to share information directly with shippers and rail and motor carriers.

Supply chain issues tied to liner shipping have been front page news throughout 2021; just about everyone agrees that there’s a problem. The New York Shipping Exchange (NYSHEX), the container shipping industry’s solution for digital and enforceable freight contracting,  has announces the appointment of new members to its board of directors and launch of the governing NYSHEX Member Council. This announcement follows the Federal Maritime Commission’s (FMC) December 2, 2017 approval of the NYSHEX governance model. NYSHEX now ushers in a fair, transparent and compliant process to ensure the interests of members are incorporated into the operation of the exchange. "With this we add four industry representatives to the NYSHEX board of directors, two seats filled by shipper members (BCOs or NVOCCs) and two by carrier members.

Danish container shipping giant Maersk Line has followed in the footsteps of its counterparts CMA CGM and Hapag-Lloyd and joined the New York Shipping Exchange (NYSHEX) as its founding member. Along with Hapag Lloyd, CMA CGM, MOL, OOCL, and COSCO, Maersk Line will begin posting digital contract offers for the Transpacific Westbound trade on the exchange as early as March of this year. "This marks a significant milestone for us as we now have added six of the top global ocean carriers as members in the last nine months," says a statement from NYSHEX. These carrier members represent a combined 52% of global capacity (source: Alphaliner) and all three of the alliances: 2M, Ocean Alliance and THE Alliance.

Annual cargo volumes at the Port of New York and New Jersey beat the previous record by more than 10 percent, according to figures released by the port. The port said it handled 6,371,720 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs) (or 3,664,013 cargo containers) in 2015, an increase of 10.4 percent over the previous record set in 2014, allowing the port to maintain its position as the busiest on the East Coast with nearly 30 percent of the nation’s total market share. New York and New Jersey's cargo terminals shut down on Friday after more than a thousand longshoremen walked off the job, shuttering one of the country's busiest port networks. The employees stopped working around 11 a.m. (1600 GMT). It was not immediately clear what had prompted the walkout. "To run a picket you need a permit and there wasn't one issued by the Port Authority," said one Port Authority official who requested anonymity. Rates for capesize bulk carriers on key Asian routes are set to remain in the doldrums next week, staying flat or gaining just a few cents as an oversupply of ships weighs on cargo availability, ship brokers said. But there could be brighter prospects in the coming weeks on rates for voyages from Brazil to China if chartering activity increases, brokers added. "There's no real direction to the capesize market. There's not enough cargo volume," one Singapore based capesize broker said on Thursday. The vote by the ILA's 200-member wage scale committee moves East and Gulf coast ports closer to their first coast wide strike in 35 years. The International Longshoremen's Association President Harold Daggett has been authorized by ILA delegates to call a strike if bargaining impasse not settled before the union's contract expires December 29, 2012. An ILA strike would affect container and roll-on, roll-off cargo covered by the ILA-USMX coast wide master contract. The ILA would continue to work breakbulk cargo and cruise lines that employ ILA labor but are not covered by the master contract. Perishables and military cargo also would be exempt.

More than 279,200 jobs generated by activity in the Port of New York and New Jersey, according to a study released today. The independent economic impact study of port operations, prepared by A. Strauss-Wieder Inc., of Westfield, New Jersey, showed that jobs directly associated with port activity increased by nearly 3.5 percent, despite turbulent economic conditions, since the last time a similar comprehensive economic impact analysis was conducted in 2008. The assessment also shows the significant economic value that the port and maritime industry has and continues to generate through investments in the Region’s maritime infrastructure and through the capital markets.
