Port NY/NJ Sees Record Cargo Volume in 2015

Annual cargo volumes at the Port of New York and New Jersey beat the previous record by more than 10 percent, according to figures released by the port. The port said it handled 6,371,720 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs) (or 3,664,013 cargo containers) in 2015, an increase of 10.4 percent over the previous record set in 2014, allowing the port to maintain its position as the busiest on the East Coast with nearly 30 percent of the nation’s total market share. New York Area Ports Shut Down after Dock Workers Walk Out

New York and New Jersey's cargo terminals shut down on Friday after more than a thousand longshoremen walked off the job, shuttering one of the country's busiest port networks. The employees stopped working around 11 a.m. (1600 GMT). It was not immediately clear what had prompted the walkout. "To run a picket you need a permit and there wasn't one issued by the Port Authority," said one Port Authority official who requested anonymity. Coalition Asks Senate for Vessel Discharge Legislation

On June 20, a diverse coalition of 58 national and regional organizations representing a wide array of leading business, maritime and labor organizations signed on to a letter to Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee Chairman John Rockefeller (D-W.Va.) and Ranking Member John Thune (R-SD) urging that the committee mark up and approve S. 2094, a bill that would establish a uniform, science-based national framework for the regulation of ballast water and other vessel discharges. S. 2094, introduced on March 6 by Sens.

Industry Urges Senate for Vessel Discharge Legislation

On March 13, a diverse coalition of 59 national and regional organizations representing a wide array of business, maritime and labor interests signed on to a letter to Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee leadership, Chairman John Rockefeller (D-WV) and Ranking Member John Thune (R-SD), thanking them for cosponsoring S. 2094, a bill that would establish a uniform national framework for the regulation of ballast water and other vessel discharges, and urging swift Committee consideration and approval. S. 2094, introduced on March 6 by Sens. Mark Begich (D-AK) and Marco Rubio (R-FL), has 23 bipartisan co-sponsors, nearly one-quarter of the Senate.

East & Gulf Ports Longshoremen Strike Authorized

The vote by the ILA's 200-member wage scale committee moves East and Gulf coast ports closer to their first coast wide strike in 35 years. The International Longshoremen's Association President Harold Daggett has been authorized by ILA delegates to call a strike if bargaining impasse not settled before the union's contract expires December 29, 2012. An ILA strike would affect container and roll-on, roll-off cargo covered by the ILA-USMX coast wide master contract. The ILA would continue to work breakbulk cargo and cruise lines that employ ILA labor but are not covered by the master contract. Perishables and military cargo also would be exempt.

NY-NJ Port & Maritime Impact Study

The Significant Economic Impact of the New York-New Jersey Port and Maritime Industry. More than 279,200 jobs generated by activity in the Port of New York and New Jersey, according to a study released today. The independent economic impact study of port operations, prepared by A. Strauss-Wieder Inc., of Westfield, New Jersey, showed that jobs directly associated with port activity increased by nearly 3.5 percent, despite turbulent economic conditions, since the last time a similar comprehensive economic impact analysis was conducted in 2008. The assessment also shows the significant economic value that the port and maritime industry has and continues to generate through investments in the Region’s maritime infrastructure and through the capital markets.

Keller 2009 Person of the Year

Peter I. Keller, President of NYK Line (North America) Inc., has been selected the 2009 Person of the Year by the New York/New Jersey Foreign Freight Forwarders and Brokers Association, Inc. "Peter Keller has significantly impacted the global trade community and demonstrated great leadership in the international transport industry," said Matthew Brauner, Association President. The award will be presented during the 92nd annual dinner at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York on January 28, 2009. This event draws nearly 900 guests. Waterfront Commission Grants Joint-Recommendation

The Waterfront Commission of New York Harbor announced that it granted the joint-recommendation of the New York Shipping Association-International Longshoremen's Association Contract Board which requested that the Commission accept applications from 400 persons for inclusion in the Longshoremen's Register and also that the Commission accept applications for the replacement of up to 415 potential retirees for the period of October 1, 2002 to September 30, 2003. Waterfront Commission Schedules Public Hearing

The Waterfront Commission of New York Harbor announced today that it has scheduled a public hearing to commence on December 13, 2002 to consider the joint-recommendation of the New York Shipping Association-International Longshoremen's Association Contract Board (Contract Board) requesting the Commission to accept applications from 400 persons for inclusion in the Longshoremen's Register. The hearing will be held in the Commission's Hearing Room at 39 Broadway, 4th Floor, New York, New York at 10:00 A.M. In 1999, the States of New York and New Jersey amended the Waterfront Commission Act to provide for a more streamlined and efficient manner of bringing a sufficient number of dockworkers into the labor force to meet the demand for such labor.
