Newport News Sub Contract: Up to 1,000 More Workers

According to a report from the Daily Reporter, up to 1,000 workers are expected to be added to Newport News Shipbuilding's Virginia-class attack submarine construction program as production increases to two subs per year.   (Source: Daily Reporter)

U.S. Sub, the Virginia, to be Christened August 16

With a length of 377 ft., a beam of 34 ft. and a displacement of 7,800 tons, the Virginia is the first U.S. submarine designed to satisfy the requirements of regional and near-land missions in the post-Cold War era. The ship is also designed with a reactor plant that will not require refueling during the planned life of the ship -- reducing life-cycle costs while increasing underway time. Unobtrusive, non-provocative and connected with land, air, sea and space- based assets, Virginia-class submarines will carry payloads that include special operations forces; unmanned undersea vehicles; mini-submarines to transport special operations personnel; and 38 weapons (torpedoes and Tomahawk cruise missiles). Virginia, the Nation's Most Advanced Submarine, to Be Christened Saturday

General Dynamics Electric Boat will christen the Virginia (SSN-774), the U.S. Navy's newest and most advanced nuclear attack submarine, at a ceremony at its shipyard here Saturday, Aug. 16, at 11 a.m. Electric Boat is a wholly owned subsidiary of General Dynamics (NYSE:GD). Ship sponsor is Lynda Johnson Robb, daughter of former President Lyndon B. Johnson and Lady Bird Johnson, and the wife of former U.S. Sen. Charles S. Robb (D- Va.) The event's principal speaker is U.S. Sen. George Allen (R- Va.). Capt. David J. Kern, a 1981 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, is the ship's commanding officer. The Virginia is the first U.S. submarine designed to satisfy the requirements of regional and near-land missions in the post-Cold War era.

Carrier Named in Honor of Former President

Secretary of the Navy Gordon R. England will name the Navy's tenth Nimitz class aircraft carrier in honor of World War II Naval Aviator and former President of the United States George Herbert Walker Bush during a ceremony today at 3 p.m. in the Pentagon Auditorium, room 5A1070. Senator John Warner of Virginia, a former secretary of the Navy himself, will join England and the former president for the event. The future USS George H.W. under construction at Northrop Grumman's Newport News in Virginia. Bush's lifetime of service to American began when he joined the Navy on his 18th birthday in 1942 as a seaman. commission and designated a Naval Aviator before his 19th birthday. Jacinto. making a bombing run. bailing out of the doomed aircraft.

Stewart & Stevenson Completes Emergency Diesel Generator Sets for Carrier

Stewart & Stevenson Services, Inc., announced that the company's Distributed Energy Solutions Division in Houston has successfully completed production and testing on four high voltage emergency generator sets for the U.S. Navy's next nuclear aircraft carrier. Delivery of the first pair was made in May of 2003 and the second pair is more than a year ahead of schedule. The Nimitz Class carrier, originally designated CVN77 and later named the USS George H.W. Bush in a Pentagon ceremony in early December 2002, is under construction at Northrop Grumman Newport News in Virginia. The carrier will rely on backup power provided by Emergency Diesel Generator (EDG) sets produced by Stewart & Stevenson.
