NYK Receives ClassNK Certification for Offshore Wind CTV Training

NYK has secured certification from ClassNK for Japan’s first training program for crew members of offshore wind industry crew transfer vessels (CTVs).The training is scheduled to be conducted at the Akita School of Wind and Sea training center in Oga City, Akita Prefecture, from April - offering three programs in total.The certification from Class NK is for simulator-based training for operating CTVs, which confirms that the training program meets quality and international standards after a review of the training framework

Ecochlor Signs CCS Letter of Intent

Ecochlor, Inc. has signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) with Diana Shipping Services and carbon capture and storage (CCS) specialist, Sinotech CCS for the installation of a Sinotech scrubber and CCS system onboard one of Diana Shipping’s capesize dry bulk carrier, the MV G.P. Zafirakis.This system is designed to capture 25% of the CO2 emitted within the exhaust gas and temporarily storing it onboard in liquified form (LCO2). Sinotech will provide the expertise for a full feasibility study

ClassNK Amends Rules for Seawater-lubricated Shafts

Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK) has joined the major classification societies to amend its rules relating to the inspection of seawater-lubricated propeller shaft systems.The amendment means that ships with open seawater-lubricated propeller shafts that are built to ClassNK rules are subject to the same 15-year shaft withdrawal inspection periods as oil-lubricated shafts and sterntubes, subject to monitoring criteria.The announcement brings ClassNK’s requirements in line with those of other large class societies

PowerX Unveils 'First-ever' Battery Tanker

Japan-based company PowerX has unveiled the detailed design of the first-ever ‘Battery Tanker’ at an exhibition in Imabari City, Japan. The inaugural ship “X” aims for completion by 2025, with domestic and international field testing planned to start in 2026. This electric propulsion vessel will be 140 meters long and will be equipped with 96 containerized marine batteries, providing a total capacity of 241MWh. "The onboard battery system is based on our proprietary module design, featuring safe and reliable lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery cells that ensure a lifespan over 6,000 cycles.

Zephyrus Marine Partners with Mirai Ships to Build Zero-emission Vessel for Japanese Offshore Wind Sector

Zephyrus Marine has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Japanese shipyard Mirai Ships to build the Zephyrus Zero Carbon Offshore wind service vessel. Ad Hoc Marine Designs Ltd. (Ad Hoc) will be providing the design for the zero-emission Crew Transfer Vessel (“CTV”), which will incorporate Shift Clean Energy's  PwrSwäp technology. The class NK-approved energy storage system will allow crew transfer vessels to swap their modular battery systems with ease while providing a zero-emission service to the Japanese offshore wind sector, Zephyrus Marine said.

Shift Clean Energy Announces Latest Type Approvals

Shift Clean Energy (Shift) on Tuesday announced it has received type approval from both the Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) and Japanese Marine Standards (NK) for its energy storage system.Shift’s lithium-ion battery-based ESS are used for hybrid or fully electric propulsion systems for marine, offshore and inland waterway applications alongside land-based industrial and renewable energy applications. BW Offshore Says Fatal Incident in Indian Yard Not Related to Its FPSOs

Oslo-listed FPSO leasing company BW Offshore said Wednesday a fatal incident had occurred in the Priya Blue shipyard in India, but that it was not related to ongoing recycling of former BW Offshore FPSOs at the yard.BW Offshore said in February it had signed an agreement with Priya Blue Industries yard in India to recycle the Cidade de São Vicente FPSO in compliance with Hong Kong Convention. The convention, adopted in 2009, is aimed at ensuring that ships when being recycled after reaching the end of their operational lives

BW Offshore Sells FPSO Umuroa for Scrap

After it last month said it would recycle its FPSO BW Cidade de São Vicente, FPSO owner BW Offshore has now agreed to sell another FPSO for scrap, this time the FPSO Umuroa.The company said Monday it had signed an agreement to recycle the FPSO Umuroa in compliance with the Hong Kong International Convention at Baijnath Melaram (‘the Yard’) in India. Mitsubishi's DIA-SOx Scrubbers Installed on 22 Ships YTD

Navis Solution on Evergreen Newbuilds

Navis, the provider of maritime software solutions for cargo and vessel performance and compliance,  announced that its MACS3 loading computer will be installed on two newbuilding series of container vessels owned and operated by Taiwan-based Evergreen Marine Corporation.Navis, a part of Cargotec Corporation, said that due to the owner’s decision to have this loading computer installed, they are moving to support safer and more effective onboard cargo handling.The newbuildings are currently being built at two different Chinese shipyards. The Aphrodite Leader, a pure car and truck carrier (PCTC), is the first vessel under Wallem Ship Management to come under the Japanese Flag.The Aphrodite Leader completed the various inspections, audits and surveys in accordance with the Japanese Flag requirements. The vessel then officially changed over to Japanese Flag upon receipt of the statutory certificates from the Japanese Government and Class NK.This marks a positive milestone as Wallem is now one of just a few international ship managers capable of managing Japanese Flag vessels.

MOL, Makarov University Pact on Northern Sea Route

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Admiral Makarov State University of Maritime and Inland Shipping during a meeting held in St.Petersburg, the Russian Federation.The MOU reconfirms and further develops the cooperation between the two organizations related to the training of seafarers especially in the field of Northern Sea Route operations.MOL has been operating icebreaking LNG carriers for the Yamal LNG project that navigate in the Northern Sea Route, and MOL crews have had special training such as polar water training courses for navigation officers and cold climate survival training course at the Makarov Training Centre

AEGIR-Marine Wins NK Class Type Approval

AEGIR-Marine assigned with an NK Class Type Approval. The newly certified seal assembly will be available for customers worldwide as of today. They are an addition to our Type Approval from several other major classification societies.For the NK Class Approval AEGIR-Marine performed a 2,000 hours endurance test in its state-of-the-art and certified R&D Test Center. A 1,000 hours of test runs were at extreme RPM and another 1,000 hours were at low to average RPM. Also, the conditions a seal has to withstand were simulated as realistically as possible.

NYK to Conduct IGF Code Training

Japanese shipping giant Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK)'s  training program for seafarers responsible for liquefied natural gas (LNG) and other low-flashpoint fuels on board NYK Group-operated ships has been accredited by Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (Class NK).With this, NYK has now become the first Japanese shipping company to obtain an international institution’s certification in the field of International Code for Ships Using Gases and Other Low-flashpoint Fuels (IGF Code) training."Compared with Europe, a training system had not developed in Asia, and thus seafarers from the Philippines and India, which make up the majority of seafarers in the industry

Internet of Ships Open Platform Establishes Testbed

A testbed was established for an Internet of Ships Open Platform (IoS-OP), and for the test NYK provided a next-generation onboard IoT platform that the company has been developing with MTI Co. Ltd., an NYK Group company, and Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation (NTT).The NYK Group will proactively make use of the IoS-OP to improve safety and reduce environmental loads, and thus create an innovative, new business model.The IoS-OP consortium was launched in June 2018 by ShipDC, a ship data center established by Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (Class NK) aimed at establishing an open and common platform to share data collected from vessel operation throughout the entire maritime industry.NYK joined as core member of the consortium
