Canada Cuts Retaliatory Tariffs on Boats

The Canadian government has removed the 10 percent retaliatory tariffs on U.S.-built recreational boats that resulted from President Trump’s 10 percent tariff on aluminum and 25 percent tariff on steel imported from that country to the United States.According industry obersers, removal of retaliatory tariffs seen as a critical first step toward elimination of US section 232 tariffs and ratification of USMCA trade agreement.A joint statement from NMMA Canada and NMMA said this marks the most positive development for the industry since the tariff issues first emerged."As such, we have been informed that all boats imported on or after April 30, 2019, are no longer subject to retaliatory tariffs (on a forward basis).

NMMA Honors MasterCraft’s XStar with 2018 Innovation Award

MCM Inks Key Strategic Partnerships

MetalCraft Marine (MCM) has announced an exciting strategic partnership has been signed between MetalCraft Marine and Bill Connor, President of Connor Industries and Stanley Custom Aluminum Boats. Mr. Connor will be President of MetalCraft Marine and MetalCraft Marine US Inc of Cape Vincent NY. Mr. Connor is a major contributor to the boating industry and sits on the Board of the NMMA and Toronto Boat Show. Kull Named President of Torqeedo Group

Marcia Kull has been named President of Torqeedo Group, Inc., and will direct global sales and strategy for the electric and hybrid marine propulsion systems manufacturer. Kull will oversee Torqeedo’s growth activities in the Americas, EMEA and Asia-Pacific regions. The newly created position is an expansion of the current management team. She will assume her new role on May 1, 2017. Kull joins Torqeedo from Volvo Penta of the Americas, where she was most recently Vice President, Marine Sales.

Volvo Penta Wins Innovation Award for Inboard Joystick

The National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) and Boating Writers International (BWI) today presented Volvo Penta with a 2017 Innovation Award for the Volvo Penta Joystick for Inboard. It is the first and only joystick for twin inboard shaft installations that includes both docking and driving modes and integrates all five steering components: thruster, rudders, gear shift, slip and throttle. “The Joystick for Inboard propulsion delivers substantial benefits to boat builders, dealers and customers, allowing us to offer a complete helm-to-prop solution for inboard applications that makes docking and driving a shaft boat effortless and intuitive,” said Ron Huibers, president of Volvo Penta of the Americas.

NMMA CSI award for Volvo Penta

The National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) has presented the 14th consecutive annual Customer Satisfaction Index (CSI) award to Volvo Penta for its gasoline sterndrive engines. The CSI awards, presented at the Miami International Boat Show Feb. 17, recognize boat and engine manufacturers for excellence in customer satisfaction. Volvo Penta was the only company to win a CSI award in the sterndrive category this year. The marine industry CSI award signifies that Volvo Penta achieved and maintained a standard of 90 percent or higher in customer satisfaction, based on surveys of customers who purchased a new boat or engine during the period from Jan. 1 to Dec. 31, 2016.

Marcia Kull, vice president of marine sales for Volvo Penta of the Americas, has been selected by the Manufacturing Institute as one of the top women in U.S. manufacturing for 2016. Kull and the other honorees will be recognized at the fourth annual Women in Manufacturing STEP (Science, Technology, Engineering and Production) Ahead Award at a gala dinner April 21 in Washington, D.C. The STEP Ahead Awards celebrate those women who have demonstrated excellence and leadership in their careers in all levels of the manufacturing industry, from the factory floor to the C-suite.

Volvo Penta Wins NMMA's CSI Award

The National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) this week presented the 12th consecutive Customer Satisfaction Index (CSI) award to Volvo Penta recognizing excellence in customer satisfaction in marine sterndrive engines. The CSI award is based on an independent survey of over 50,000 consumers purchasing a new boat or engine during the period from April 2014 through March 2015. The CSI award signifies that Volvo Penta achieved and maintained an independently measured standard of excellence of 90 percent or higher. The CSI program was implemented by the NMMA to support industry efforts to improve the consumer boating experience and recognize those companies that achieve the highest standards of quality and customer satisfaction.

NOAA’s National Saltwater Recreational Fishing Policy Opposed

Recently, NOAA Fisheries released the implementation plan to support the latest National Saltwater Recreational Fishing Policy. For a tenth consecutive year, Boston Whaler was recognized for excellence in customer satisfaction by the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) as a recipient of the 2013 Customer Satisfaction (CSI) Award. As announced by the NMMA at the 2013 International BoatBuilders Exhibition and Conference (IBEX), Boston Whaler earned its award in the Fiberglass Outboard Boats category. EU and US Associations Partner for Transatlantic Trade

On 18 September 2013, Thom Dammrich, president of the National Marine Manufacturers Association and Robert Marx, President of European Boating Industry, signed a joint declaration stating the intention of both organizations to work together in order to reduce and looking ahead, eliminate, unnecessary regulatory costs and unjustified regulatory differences between the EU and the US in the boating industry. This common declaration is occurring during the wider EU-US trade negotiations which were launched in July 2013 under the name of Transatlantic Trade & Investment Partnership (TTIP). The American Boat Builders & Repairers Association (ABBRA) announces its line-up of topics and speakers for the 2014 ABBRA Boatyard Business Conference. The event, which focuses strictly on issues important to boatyards, boat builders and marine service/repair businesses, will take place January 22 – 24, 2014, at the B Ocean Hotel in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and will offer conference participants a venue to hear updates on opportunities and challenges facing the boatyard/boatbuilding marine industry sector. Registration is now open. Applicants are advised to register early to receive 2013 rates; members who register before December 8th pay only $295 and non-members pay $395. Court Dismisses Boating Industry’s Challenge to EPA Misfueling Rule

The National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) said it is disappointed with the U.S. Court of Appeals decision released on Tuesday, October 21, 2014 for the D.C. Circuit to dismiss the recreational boating industry’s challenge of the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) rule regarding misfueling mitigation plans surrounding the sale of E15. The case specifically challenged the EPA’s plans to prevent misfueling including the use of what NMMA believes is a highly inadequate pump warning label amongst other insufficient means. Proposal on Spray Painting Passes

NMMA in conjunction with Lauderdale Marine Center (LMC) and the National Fire Protection Committee on Spray Finishing, recently drafted and approved a new standard which reduces the fire risks of spray painting large objects, including yachts in temporary membrane enclosures. Temporary membrane enclosures are used in the marine industry to paint yachts that are too large to fit in a spray booth. The standard not only makes painting safer but eases the concerns of fire marshals and regulators who oversee this work. The new standard will be published in Chapter 18 of the 2015 edition of the National Fire Protection Association’s code 33 (NFPA33) and  promotes best-practices throughout the industry.
