Netherlands-based  global logistics company Samskip is restructuring the multi-purpose cargo and reefer services connecting North Sea and Baltic ports to Norway operated by subsidiary Nor Lines.A press release from the company stated: "The overhaul, effective from October 1st, 2018, will meet rising demand for reefer and project cargo services southbound and increase capacity for conventional and project cargoes northbound along the Norwegian coast and beyond to Murmansk. Two existing multi-purpose service loops increase to three."In the most obvious change, capacity on the three-ship Nor Lines service between Baltic ports and Norway will be expanded to four vessels, each with reefer/palletized and deck space, and 50mt heavy lift crane capacity.

Shipping company Nor Lines has allocated its two LNG-powered multipurpose vessels to a biweekly liner service from the SCA terminal in Rotterdam to the Norwegian coast. Titan LNG, the service supplier of liquefied natural gas, will be supplying the chilled fuel to two Nor Lines' vessels - The MV Kvitnos and the MV Kvitbjørn. The ships are bunkering, like the Wes Amelie, with Titan LNG at the City Terminal in the Prins Willem Alexander harbour (port number 2790). The LNG is delivered to the vessels by trucks. The Port of Rotterdam and Titan LNG have set up the site temporarily to bunker LNG to sea-going vessels until there are sufficient LNG bunker barges available. Nor lines is a fully owned subsidiary of the shipping company Samskip.

Samskip subsidiary Nor Lines will include calls at Rotterdam for the first time in its weekly multipurpose liner service connecting to Western, Mid and Northern Norway, with effect from June 1st. The service is provided by Nor Lines' state of the art, LNG-fuelled vessels MV Kvitnos and MV Kvitbjorn. These flexible ships will sail in 14-day loops, connecting Rotterdam and Eemshaven with Norwegian ports from Hammerfest in the far north, and taking in calls including Sandnes/Tananger, Bergen, Trondheim, Ålesund, Bodo and Tromso. In Rotterdam, the call will be accommodated at the SCA Logistics terminal, whose lay-out, equipment and experience focus on multipurpose vessels, RoRo, Break-bulk and containers can be handled in one place which is essential for this service.

Rolls-Royce has unveiled a ‘cloud-based’ fuel consumption and carbon dioxide monitoring module designed to help ship owners meet the European Union’s Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) regulation. Starting January 1, 2018, collection and reporting of voyage data will become a mandatory, as owners of vessels over 5,000 gross metric tons that call at European Union ports will be required to monitor, report and verify their fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. European multimodal transport provider Samskip said it will acquire activities associated with Nor Lines AS, marking a major expansion of its shipping, transport and logistics businesses in Norway. Subject to approval by Norway’s competition authorities, Samskip has agreed with the DSD Group to acquire the activities of Nor Lines, which generate an average annual turnover of €110 million ($128.2 million). With its head office in Stavanger, Nor Lines is a diversified logistics business offering domestic and international services.

Siem Offshore and Subsea 7 have signed a joint three-year service agreement with Rolls-Royce. The agreement covers a total of 74 offshore vessels. This is the first agreement the two Siem owned companies have signed with the same service provider. Under the agreement, Rolls-Royce will maintain and service all of the equipment it has delivered to the two companies’ offshore vessels. At present, aftermarket services account for roughly 40 percent of Rolls-Royce Marine’s revenues. Long-term agreements account for around a quarter of this.

Nor Lines and Rolls-Royce have signed a “Power-by-the-Hour” service agreement for the two vessels Kvitbjørn and Kvitnos. The new service offering harnesses the power of “big data” to monitor, plan and perform maintenance and repairs on all the equipment it has installed on the cargo vessels. Power-by-the-Hour is a completely new service from Rolls-Royce Marine, and the agreement with Nor Lines is the first of its kind. The service builds Rolls-Royce’s many years of experience with equipment monitoring, proactive servicing and available solutions in the aerospace market.

The Norwegian Competition Authority has today rejected Eimskip’s acquisition of the Norwegian shipping and logistics company Nor Lines AS. The result of this decision is that Eimskip is not allowed to acquire Nor Lines. The potential acquisition of Nor Lines was not taken into account in the EBITDA forecast for the year 2017, and therefore this decision has no effect on that forecast. Acquisition cost in year 2017 related to this project is estimated EUR 300,000 which will be expensed in the first quarter 2017. Eimskip will seek other options in developing and strengthening its operations in Norway for the benefit of our customers. If the acquisition had been approved that would have led to more extended services to importers and exporters in the Norwegian market.

The Norwegian Competition Authority has today given a notice of an objection to Eimskip’s acquisition of the Norwegian shipping and logistics company Nor Lines AS. The notice reflects the Authority's preliminary conclusion, and Eimskip has 15 business days to present counterarguments. A final decision will be made by the Authority after another 15 business days. Eimskip is evaluating next steps with its legal advisors. In last November, Eimskip has entered into an agreement to acquire the Norwegian shipping and logistics company Nor Lines. Nor Lines is a strategic fit in Eimskip’s core market and the overall transaction is asset-light.

Iceland-based Eimskip has agreed to acquire Norwegian shipping and logistics company Nor Lines. According to Eimskip, the operation of Nor Lines has been challenging in recent years and the business will be restructured in order to improve the firm’s services. In a press release on November 16th, Eimskip stated: " With reference to a press release from Eimskip dated 2 November, the company emphasizes the following: Eimskip has entered into an agreement to acquire the Norwegian shipping and logistics company Nor Lines. The final purchase price is subject to adjustments based upon the company’s financial statements for the year 2016. The approximate purchase price is EUR 15 million and can decrease or increase based on the financial performance of Nor Lines for the year 2016.

Eimskip has entered into an agreement to acquire the Norwegian shipping and logistics company Nor Lines. The business, with about 200 employees and an estimated annual turnover of approximately EUR 110 million, will be restructured in order to be aligned with Eimskip’s current operations in Norway. Ballast water treatment (BWT) specialist Optimarin said it has become the first UV system supplier to meet USCG marine water requirements, positioning the Norwegian company for full USCG approval in 2016. In a series of land-based tests, both the standard MPN (regrowth) method and the more exacting FDA/CMFDA, or ‘instant kill’, benchmark were successfully assessed, the company said. Optimarin’s system utilizes UV irradiation and back-flushing filters to wipe out invasive organisms that stow away in ballast.

Five pilot projects have been cohsen to be pursued as part of Norway’s Green Coastal Shipping Program aiming to encourage research and implementation of green technology concepts in the country’s shipping sector. The pilot projects, presented by DNV GL and 25 partners from the Norwegian maritime industry and the Norwegian authorities, include several different ship types, and infrastructure with an emphasis on alternative fuel concepts. "When we launched the Green Coastal Shipping Program, we said we wanted to make Norway a world showcase for green coastal shipping.

Ro-ro cargo vessel Kvitbjørn ran aground off Ulsteinvik port, Norway, in the afternoon June 28, while approaching the port. The vessel, owned by Norway-based Nor Lines, was refloated at 2145 LT same day with the help of tugs at high tide, and taken to port. It is understood, that vessel suffered some damages, but no leak reported. There were 15 onboard, with no injuries reported. The grounding was caused by mechanical failure, though vessel is brand new. Kvitbjørn – means White Bear or Polar Bear – is a liquefied natural gas (LNG)-fueled cargo ferry that will provide regular service along the Norwegian west coast and between northern Europe and Norway.

The Norwegian shipping company Nor Lines has started a direct weekly RoRo connection between German Port of Cuxhaven and Norway. The first departure of the liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered 5,000 dwt short sea cargo vessel MS Kvitbjørn was on May 7. Two new RoRo vessels - vitbjørn and Kvitnos - will be used on this service. ”The favourable location of the CuxPort Terminal, Cuxhaven and its logistics expertise, particularly in the RoRo sector, played a major role in our choice of port,” said Sigurd Ur, Director for Sales & Marketing at Nor Lines. In addition to performing the handling work, Cuxport will also operate as the clearance and booking agent. The port logistics specialist will also carry out the marketing work for Nor Lines in Germany.

Nor Lines’ new flagship MV Kvitbjørn is ready for its naming ceremony and regular operation as “the most environmentally friendly ship in the world,” the vessel’s owner announced. The naming ceremony will take place on April 16 at Skagenkaien in Stavanger, Norway. “MV Kvitbjørn is the first of two new natural gas-powered cargo ships which will replace older tonnage on route between northern Europe and Norway,” Nor Lines CEO Tor Arne Borge said. Industrial chains for handling heavy loads are being produced for the first time from DSM’s ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMwPE) fiber, branded as Dyneema. DSM Dyneema has formed a strategic partnership with Load Solutions AS in Bergen, Norway, for development, manufacturing, sales and marketing of link chains made with Dyneema fiber. The chains, branded as TYCAN, are fabricated from webbings and have numerous economic, environmental and safety advantages over traditional chains that for centuries have been made in iron and steel.

Under the contract, Nor Lines has ordered 10 ECDIS 24 systems for installations on board of five ships, with MV Cometa being the first vessel to be refitted. All five shipsets will be supplied and commissioned by Raytheon Anschütz’ Norwegian distributor Syberg AS. The ECDIS 24 retrofit package consists of a 24” TFT Panel- PC, an interface box providing all necessary interfaces as required by the ECDIS performance standard IEC61174, trackball, DVD drive and cabling. The exchange of data, routes and charts between the two ECDIS onboard will be easily realized via LAN network cable.

March 2013 saw Rolls Royce collect the Green Ship Technology Award at the Green Ship Technology Conference in Hamburg for its Environship concept, which has lean burn Bergen Engines gas power units at it core. The Environship combines a range of Rolls Royce technologies (Bergen Engines is a subsidiary business) in a cargo ship model that, set against comparable vessels using diesel power engines, offers CO2 reductions of up to 40% (alongside 92% reductions in NOx and 100% less SOx emissions).

LNG as marine fuel takes another step forward as Eidsvaag AS took delivery of the first vessel of the Rolls-Royce prize winning Environship range this week, featuring a combination of Rolls-Royce design and technologies which reduce CO2 emissions by up to 40 percent compared to similar diesel powered vessels. Once in operation the vessel will operate a demanding schedule with a weekly round voyage along the Norwegian coast delivering feed pellets to fish farms regardless of weather conditions.

Raytheon Anschütz was awarded a contract for the supply of ECDIS 24 to a significant retrofit program of Norwegian shipowner Nor Lines. ECDIS 24 is a particular designed retrofit version of the well-known Raytheon Anschütz ECDIS. Under the contract, Nor Lines has ordered ten ECDIS 24 systems for installations on board of five ships, with MV Cometa being the first vessel to be refitted. All five shipsets will be supplied and commissioned by Raytheon Anschütz’ Norwegian distributor Syberg AS.
