Second Converted Self-unloader Delivered to CSL Americas

Canadian shipping company the CSL Group said it has taken delivery of CSL Kajika, the second of two converted 77,250 DWT gravity fed self-unloading ships at COSCO Nantong shipyard, on October 22, 2021.The vessel will operate in the CSL Americas fleet as part of the CSL International Pool, where it will join sister-ship CSL Koasek, which was delivered on August 30, 2021, and is trading on the North American West Coast since late September this year.Both CSL Kajika and CSL Koasek were previously Kamsarmax bulk carriers that are being into modern, gravity-fed self-unloaders.

When marine safety collides with environmental advocacy and non-maritime business interests, the discussion can be contentious, confusing and cumbersome. In June 2016, the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) opened a public comment period regarding new anchorage zones in the Hudson River; usually a rather low-key set of issues. This proved different. Opponents jumped on the proposal – initially suggested by three maritime organizations – as a backdoor way to facilitate a huge expansion in crude oil shipments on the Hudson.

NORDEN Opens Vancouver Office

NORDEN has opened a new office in Vancouver, Canada, as the Danish ship owner seeks to expand its global reach and local presence on the North American West Coast. “The new and increased presence on the West Coast will strengthen NORDEN’s ability to provide customers with transport to and from the Americas and from North America to Asia and enable NORDEN to become even more competitive on local coastwise trades,” the company said. “NORDEN has a strong presence with many port calls on the West Coast.

Fukushima Site Still Leaking After 5 Years

Five years after the Fukushima nuclear accident, there is still no U.S. federal agency responsible for studies of radioactive contaminants in the ocean. But scientific data about the levels of radioactivity in the ocean off our shores are available publicly thanks to ongoing efforts of independent researchers, including Ken Buesseler, a radiochemist with Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI), who has led the effort to create and maintain an ocean monitoring network along the U.S. West Coast.

Mega Ships and Cyber Attacks Pose New Threats

Shipping losses continued their long-term downward trend with 75 reported worldwide in 2014, making it the safest year in shipping for 10 years, according to Allianz Global Corporate & Specialty SE’s (AGCS)  third annual Safety and Shipping Review 2015, which analyzes reported shipping losses of over 100 gross tons. Allianz: Shipping Losses Decline but Risks Remain

Shipping losses decline, but emerging risks pose serious challenges to marine industry, according to Allianz study. 94 large ships lost worldwide in 2013, down 20% from last year. Cap Preston Makes Maiden Call in Seattle

Hamburg SĂźd's Cap Preston--shown here at the port of Seattle --is the newest addition to the company's Pacific Coast/Australia New Zealand service fleet. Built in 2007, the ship has a nominal capacity of 1,819 TEU and a reefer capacity of 462 plugs. The high reefer capacity of the ship is particularly important given the demand for reefer service between Australia/New Zealand and the Pacific Coast.

Hamburg Süd offers with its new service between the North American West Coast and / a variety of fast and direct connections between both continents.
