Sea Star Line Vessel Used in Training Exercise

On April 2, 2014, Sea Star Line’s vessel El Faro and its employees participated in a joint training exercise at North Florida shipyards. The training exercise focused on evaluating agency procedures, communication plans and training programs to assure all agencies can respond in the most efficient way to emergency events and to mitigate risks and damage. “The mock training exercise was an excellent opportunity to participate in and ensure that our local emergency agencies are prepared for emergency response events,” stated Jim Wagstaff, vice president of operations for Sea Star Line, LLC.

Murray & Associates Hosts Third Fishing Challenge

A group of industry professionals from the commercial maritime sector gathered in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. at 8 a.m. on February 8 to participate in Murray & Associates LLC’s 2014 Fishing Challenge. Jacksonville shipyard purchases a Marine Travelift 600C to compliment existing dry dock. The Commodore Point Facility at North Florida Shipyards, Inc. has been providing commercial ship repair and modernization support to customers for over 30 years. Byrd Appointed SVP Operations, Grand Bahama

Reuben Byrd, a 28 year maritime industry veteran has been appointed Senior Vice President Operations of the Grand Bahama Shipyard Ltd., effective September 14, 2009. Byrd joined the team at the yard in time for the start of this year’s cruise season. In his capacity as SVP Operations, Byrd will report to the Chairman and CEO, Calle Rotkirch, oversee the day to day operations of the shipyard and develop the yard for future expansion. Before assuming his role at Grand Bahama Shipyard Ltd., Byrd served in several executive positions, most recently as Vice President of Repair and Conversion Operations for Bender shipbuilding in Mobile Alabama. He previously was with Tampa shipbuilding and repair as VP of Production until the sale of the yard.

MARAD Awards $17.1m in Shipyard Grants

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration announced $17.1m in grants to 14 small shipyards in 10 states. The grants are part of the Assistance to Small Shipyards program. “Small shipyards are vitally important for the health of the maritime industry, and for the nation’s economy,” said Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood. The purpose of the grants is to make capital and infrastructure improvements that facilitate the efficiency, competitive operations, and quality in ship construction and repair. Small shipyards fall into two categories: those with fewer than 600 employees, and those with between 600 and 1200 employees. MARAD to Recognize Crowley and North Florida Shipyards for $18M Conversion

Crowley Liner Services and North Florida Shipyards will be recognized on December 20 in Jacksonville by U.S. Maritime Administration (MARAD) officials for their contributions in the successful completion of the $18 million conversion of the Ready Reserve Force ship MV Cape Washington. 12:30 p.m. Crowley and North Florida Shipyards. The Cape Washington is the second ship to undergo this conversion at North Florida Shipyards. The MV Cape Wrath was completed in 2001 at a cost of approximately $15 million. program. support of military and humanitarian operations. There are 76 ships in the force. NORSHIPCO Wins Second Kennedy Contract Worth Over $21M

United Defense Industries, Inc. announced today a $21,694,925 award to its subsidiary, NORSHIPCO, by the Supervisor of Shipbuilding and Repair, Jacksonville, Fla., for the firm fixed-price Extended Selective Restricted Availability (EDSRA) on the Navy's aircraft carrier, USS JOHN F. KENNEDY (CV-67). NORSHIPCO previously won a $10 million contract in November for work on the KENNEDY. The work is scheduled to begin in January 2003 and to be completed by September 2003 at the Naval Station Mayport, Fla., the ship's home port. The work package focuses on work in two of the four engine rooms and includes main machinery room repairs consisting of tanks, boilers, forced draft blowers, steam valves, reduction gears, main feed pumps, main condenser, lube oil pumps, and piping.

North Florida Shipyards Installs Spar Deck

North Florida Shipyards completed its contract for the fabrication and installation of a spar deck on RoRo vessel Cape Rise owned by the U.S. Maritime Administration. Completed one week ahead of schedule, this is the third of a three-vessel contract - completed on schedule. The first two of the vessel series, Cape Race and Cape Ray owned by MarAd and operated by Intrepid Ship Management, were also outfitted with a spar deck measuring 42,000 sq. ft., allowing the vessel to carry an increased amount of vehicles.

With work encompassing the removal of six movable decks, and one fixed deck, three new fixed decks will be fabricated by the yard's affiliate - North Florida Shipbuilding - and installed in the cargo spaces. Additional modifications will be performed on fire stations, vent systems, lighting and hydraulic systems to serve the new deck areas.

NORSHIPCO Wins $10M Contract

NORSHIPCO, a subsidiary of United Defense Industries, Inc., has been awarded a $10 million contract by the Supervisor of Shipbuilding and Repair, Jacksonville, for two fixed-price repair packages on the U.S. Navy's aircraft carrier, USS KENNEDY (CV-66). Work is scheduled to begin in January 2003 and be completed by late summer 2003 at Naval Station Mayport, Florida, the ship's homeport. NORSHIPCO has teamed with North Florida Shipyards, Inc. (NFSY), located in Jacksonville, Fla., to perform this work. According to Tom Epley, NORSHIPCO's president, "We are pleased to be teaming with the management and workers at North Florida Shipyards. This teaming arrangement with NFSY represents entry into another major Navy market by NORSHIPCO.
