Ammonia Fuel Cells for Deep-Sea Shipping: A Key Piece of the Zero-emissions Puzzle

Interest in ammonia-powered fuel cells for the maritime sector is growing, but stakeholders have been hesitant to commit to investments in large-scale systems. Now the ShipFC project is aiming to secure a place for ammonia in the future of deep-sea shipping.The project will equip the offshore supply vessel Viking Energy, owned and operated by Eidesvik and on contract to energy major Equinor, with a 2-megawatt (MW) ammonia fuel cell, allowing it to operate for at least 3,000 hours annually on clean fuel.

ESS Saves Fuel for North Sea Construction Ship

One of the world’s largest and most advanced subsea construction vessels has been equipped with three energy storage systems (ESS), featuring for the first time ever energy and load sharing capability.Finland based technology group Wärtsilä said the new system on board North Sea Shipping AS owned North Sea Giant combines a diesel-electric configuration with batteries, and is designed to deliver as much as 50 percent fuel savings in optimal operating conditions.The installation was carried out in February 2018.

Wärtsilä’s ESS Reduces North Sea Giant's Costs

The technology group Wärtsilä has agreed to retrofit the world’s first energy storage solution on board a large offshore supply vessel. The North Sea Giant, one of the world’s largest and most advanced subsea construction vessels, will be fitted with an energy storage system that reduces the vessel’s energy consumption, operating costs and exhaust emissions. The retrofit energy storage system improves the operational efficiency and environmental footprint of the North Sea Giant, responding to key requirements of Norwegian North Sea Shipping AS, the owner of the vessel.

Montrose Port Authority Appoints New Executive

Nicholas Scott-Gray has been appointed as the head of UK-based Montrose Port Authority (MPA)  â€“ bringing with him more than 26 years’ experience within the port and shipping sectors. He brings with him over 26 years of experience within the port and shipping sectors, said a statement. Scott-Gray was most recently the business development manager at Forth Ports Ltd where he successfully developed the company’s commercial strategy for the development of the ports under its umbrella. Prior to that he also served as the port manager at Leith and Grangemouth, while also having held a number of prominent roles in the shipping and marine logistics industry. Scott-Gray (48)  has succeeded John Paterson, who held the chief executive position for nine years.

North Sea Atlantic Joins the Technip fleet

On Saturday July 26, 2014, a ceremony was held in Bergen to officially name the latest new subsea construction vessel to join the Technip fleet, the North Sea Atlantic. More than 200 guests from shipowner North Sea Shipping, ship charterer Technip and supply chain partners, gathered to attend the ceremony held at the NorYards BMV AS shipyard (previously Bergen Group) in Laksevåg, Bergen, Norway. The event was hosted by North Sea Shipping CEO, Hallvard Klepsvik, and his wife, Sigrid Anne Våge, acted as the vessel godmother. Technip announced in 2012 that it had signed a long term charter agreement with North Sea Shipping for an advanced new build construction vessel.

Extensive New Changes in North Sea Shipping Routes

New routes and Traffic Separtation Schemes in the Dutch part of the North Sea came into force at midnight on 1, August 2013. The Dutch part of the North Sea is one of the busiest shipping routes in the world. Moreover, it is now also being used more and more intensively for other purposes, such as wind energy, nature protection and sand extraction. In order to keep the waterways safe for maritime traffic and to ensure a more efficient use of the available space, it has been decided to adapt the shipping routes.

Technip Charters New-build Offshore Construction Vessel

Technip enters a long-term charter agreement with North Sea Shipping for a 2014 new-build offshore construction vessel to be built at Bergen Group BMV AS in Bergen, Norway, and delivered in 2014. The charter will be for a period of five or seven years commitment plus a five-year extension option, with a further option to purchase the vessel. The vessel is specially designed and equipped to suit the Norwegian installation market. This advanced subsea construction vessel has a length of 142 meters and width of 27 meters, and is equipped with a 400-ton crane and a 2,000-ton carousel for storage of flexible pipe below deck. The North Sea Giant is considered to be the largest offshore vessel of this type ever built, with an overall length of 156m, beam of 30m and installed power of more than 22MW. The vessel was given the prize for her innovative features, which include advanced dynamic positioning (DP) capability for DP operations based on a high redundancy level and high propulsion power. North Sea Giant has a capacity for 120 people and its structure is highlighted by its heliport on the bow and a bridge placed up on the sixth deck of the vessel. The vessel boasts a working deck area of close to 3000 sqm .

Lukoil Subsidiary Gets Stake In North Sea Shipping

Russia's LUKOIL-Arctic-Tanker, a LUKOIL shipping subsidiary, has acquired a controlling stake in North Sea Shipping in Archangelsk for an undisclosed price. The newly-acquired company, based in Russia's far north, is made up of 54 vessels in varying conditions with a total deadweight of 300,000 tons. "LUKOIL now has a fleet of 200 vessels capable of carrying (a total of) more than one million tonnes of cargo," the statement said.
