A U.K. ship pilot has died as result of an accident during a transfer from a pilot launch to a large oceangoing vessel on the east coast of Northern England.The accident occurred on January 8, 2023 in the Humber Estuary, the UK Maritime Pilots’ Association (UK MPA) said in a statement. Towage operator Svitzer said it has purchased and renamed the Immingham-based tug Innovation, following the end of a chartering agreement for the vessel from Damen Marine Services.After the acquisition, the three-year-old vessel was renamed to Svitzer Eleanor. The name was picked by and named after Eleanor Wright, the daughter of Training Master Sam Wright, who has worked on board the tug since Svitzer first chartered the vessel from Damen.Svitzer describes the 75.3-ton bollard pull Damen RSD Tug 2513 as a solid, compact tug with high maneuverability.

Terex Port Solutions (TPS) delivered a Terex Liftace 5-31 reach stacker to the north-east England based terminal, Port of Blyth, UK. The machine became operational at the south harbour of the North Sea port in December 2015. The cost effective, service friendly and ergonomic reach stacker will operate the twice weekly container service and stack yard. The machine will also be used for client port training purposes. With a wheelbase of 6,200 mm, the Terex Liftace 5-31 reach stacker offers a maximum load capacity of 45 t in the first container row and 31 t in the second container row. It features travel speeds up to 25 km/h and a maximum lifting speed of 0.45 m/s. The engine of the Liftace 5-31 reach stacker conforms to the EU Stage IV (EPA Tier 4 final) emission standard.

Yesterday, a new club house for the Cleveland Juniors Football Club in Middlesbrough in northern England was officially opened. According to a report from Reuters, Clipper Windpower Plc plans to build the world's biggest offshore wind turbines in Britain, which hopes to catch up in green energy after lagging behind others in Europe despite its rich wind resources. Iceland’s largest transport company Eimskip has purchased a containership for use on its European routes from Danish shipping company KiL Shipping A/S for more than $10 million, company officials said. Hf Eimskipafelag Islands said in a statement it was paying 890 million Iceland crowns ($10.4 million) for the vessel from KiL, which is being acquired by Norway’s privately held shipping group Tschudi & Eitzen. The ship, to be delivered to Eimskip in Rotterdam in late April, will carry an Icelandic crew and sail on Eimskip’s South Route, linking ports Icelandic ports, Immingham in northern England, and Rotterdam. The ship has a dead weight of 8,675 tons and is 126 meters long.

Around 250 passengers and crew were stranded on ferries in the River Mersey in northern England after a huge unexploded bomb was spotted, the U.K. coastguard said. The 500 pound bomb, dating from World War Two, was found by the British Royal Navy near Twelve Quays in Liverpool shortly before midnight on May 15. Two ferries, the Mersey Viking and Dublin Viking, bringing passengers from Belfast and Dublin across the Irish Sea, were forced to remain at sea May 16 while the explosive was dealt with, the coastguard said. One of the ferries had been stuck since before 4 a.m., a spokesman said. The device was also only 300 meters from a road tunnel linking Liverpool to Birkenhead under the Mersey. The tunnel was closed by police while the bomb was being dealt with.

Italia Marittima SpA (ITS) and Zim will launch a new weekly transatlantic service early August 2006. Designated the North Europe – US East Coast (NEC) service, it will link the North European ports of Antwerp, Hamburg and Liverpool with New York, Norfolk and Savannah. The new service will deploy four ships, each with a loading capacity of approximately 1,800 TEU. ITS will provide two ships, while Zim will contribute the other two ships. Antwerp – Hamburg – Liverpool – New York – Norfolk – Savannah. According to ITS, the NEC service will complement its slot allocation on the NUE service, an Evergreen-operated pendulum service linking North Europe, North America and Asia via the Panama Canal.

Struggling shipbuilder Cammell Laird Plc is to cut a further 93 jobs in Britain on the back of over 500 redundancies announced earlier in the year after the group entered into receivership. A spokeswoman for accountancy firm PricewaterhouseCoopers, acting as receivers for the group, said on Wednesday that 82 jobs would go at its plant in Tyneside, northeast England. The rest of the job cuts would take place at the Birkenhead and Teesside plants in northern England. She added that the cuts had arisen since Cammell Laird had completed work on two major contracts and so no longer needed the workers. Cammell Laird, whose main yard was established in 1824, entered receivership when a series of cancelled orders hit its finances, causing it to suspend trading in its shares.
