Tanker Helps Rescue Overdue Boaters off US East Coast

A Hong Kong registered tanker assisted in the rescue of two men adrift in a sailboat off the U.S. East Coast.On Sunday, watchstanders at the U.S. Coast Guard Fifth District command center were notified of an overdue sailing vessel, Atrevida II, which was sailing from Cape May, N.J. to Marathon, Fla. The two men aboard, 65-year-old Kevin Hyde and 76-year-old Joe Ditomasso, were last in contact with family and friends on December 3, when they departed Oregon Inlet, N.C. The Coast Guard began urgent marine information broadcasts and direct communication with commercial vessels in the area in an attempt to locate the Atrevida II. A search effort was launched, involving multiple Coast Guard aircraft and cutters, vessels from the U.S.

NAVFAC Southeast CERT Prepares for Hurricane Irma

Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Southeast is forming Contingency Engineering Response Teams (CERTs) in preparation of any damage to Naval facilities in the path of Hurricane Irma. "Teams returned last week from Naval Air Station (NAS) Kingsville and NAS Corpus Christi after performing damage assessments after Hurricane Harvey made landfall in Texas," said Integrated Product Team Gulf Coast Assistant Operations Officer Cmdr. Anant Patel who is the CERT officer in charge. Just one week later, Patel is preparing several CERTs to be prepared after Hurricane Irma passes through Florida and moves up the east coast of the United States. "We need to be ready to move out early next week depending on where there may be damage on naval installations," said Patel.

Barnett Promoted to Director, Holland America Line

Holland America Line has promoted Amy Barnett to the position of division sales director for the East. In her new role, she will be responsible for planning, organizing and directing sales programs, as well as analyzing and implementing strategic and tactical initiatives to increase sales in North America. Barnett will manage a team of 16 business development managers and four sales coordinators. She will report to Eva Jenner, vice president, North America sales. Barnett joined Holland America Line in 2004 as a business development manager covering northern Florida where she was responsible for cultivating relationships with top-producing travel agency owners and travel professionals. Previously, she worked for Norwegian Cruise Line, Orient Lines and NCL America.

Maersk Starts Weekly Service through Port of Jacksonville

The Port of Jacksonville (JAXPORT) has welcomed the 4,400 teu AS Mariana, the first ship in Maersk Line’s new weekly service to Asia through at the port’s Blount Island Marine Terminal. JAXPORT has officially announced the addition of the world’s No. 1 container shipping company to the growing number of global carriers with regular container cargo service through Jacksonville. This addition service means that nine of the world’s top 10 global container carriers now offer their customers the opportunity to move containers into and out of Northeast Florida. “What better way to illustrate JAXPORT’s increasingly visible role in international trade than to welcome the world’s largest container line,” said JAXPORT Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer Roy Schleicher.

WHALESSOUTH Reactivated

The mandatory ship reporting system, administered by the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the US Coast Guard, for ships operating in certain waters of the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Georgia and northern Florida comes into effect again on November 15. The reporting system, known as WHALESSOUTH, will remain in effect through April 15. [Source: HK Law]

Not Just A Frame for Resolve Towing

Resolve Towing and Salvage, Inc. a Division of Resolve Marine Group Inc. (RMG) has constructed a 400-ton "A" frame. This unit, with a 100-ft. boom and a lift capacity of 400 tons, is now the largest "A" frame in this region. The "A" Frame is currently mounted on an RMG owned, U.S. Flagged ABS loadline spud barge. Immediately upon being put into service, the A-Frame completed its' first mission, the removal of the derelict vessel Red Diamond in Northern Florida. Both the barge and "A" frame will be stationed in the Southeastern U.S. and Caribbean.
