Northrop Grumman Turbine Generators Selected for USN ORP

Northrop Grumman selected to provide turbine generator units for U.S. Northrop Grumman Corporation announced it has been awarded a contract by shipbuilder General Dynamics Electric Boat to complete detailed design and subsequent manufacturing, assembly, qualification and delivery of the first turbine generator units for the Ohio Replacement Program (ORP), the U.S. Navy's next-generation ballistic nuclear submarine. The turbine generators provide all of the submarine's propulsion and other electrical power requirements.

Maritime Reporter recently sat with Dr. Lanyado in his Buckingham Gate, London office to discuss the company's current endeavors and future developments. At the outset of a discussion regarding Rolls-Royce's marine business, it is immediately evident the direction in which one of the world's new leading players in marine propulsion is heading.

AMSC Completes Factory Acceptance Testing of Propulsion Motor for Navy

American Superconductor Corporation and its partner, Northrop Grumman announced the completion of factory acceptance testing for the world's first 36.5 megawatt (49,000 horsepower) high temperature superconductor (HTS) ship propulsion motor at Northrop Grumman's facility at the Philadelphia Naval Business Center. This is the final milestone before the Navy takes possession of the motor. The motor was designed, developed and manufactured under a contract from the U.S. Navy's Office of Naval Research (ONR) to demonstrate the efficacy of HTS primary- propulsion-motor technology for future Navy all-electric ships and submarines. The power and torque of this HTS motor is comparable to the requirements for the Navy's new Zumwalt class of destroyers, known as DDG 1000.

American Superconductor Wins $5.3m NAVSEA Contract

American Superconductor has signed a cost-plus-fee contract valued at $5.3m with the United States Navy's Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) for the design and optimization of high temperature superconductor (HTS) ship propulsion motors and power electronic drives. The first $1.9 million increment of funding that has been allotted for this contract will focus on motor, drive and electrical system options that are optimized for possible system integration into later flights of DDG-1000 and CG(X) surface combatant ships. AMSC Gets $13.3M Amendment from ONR

American Superconductor Corporation (NASDAQ:AMSC) has finalized an additional contract amendment with the United States Navy's Office of Naval Research (ONR). Under the terms of the amendment, the ONR has approved a $13.3 million increase to AMSC's contract for the design, manufacture and shipment of a factory-tested 36.5-megawatt (MW) (49,000 horsepower) high temperature superconductor (HTS) propulsion motor for electric warships. The amendment adds $13.3 million to AMSC's backlog, all of which is expected to be recognized as revenue by the end of calendar 2006. AMSC expects to deliver the 36.5-MW motor to the Navy test facility in Philadelphia in September 2006.

Northrop Grumman Gets USN Radar Contract

Northrop Grumman won a contract by Bath Iron Works to supply commercial-off-the-shelf surface search radars for new Arleigh Burke (DDG 51) Class destroyers. Northrop Grumman's Marine Systems business unit, headquartered here, will supply the Decca BridgeMaster E naval radars for the next 19 ships in the class, replacing the SPS-64 radars installed on the earlier DDG 51 Class ships. The first installation is scheduled to take place on USS Mason (DDG 87), which will be commissioned in 2002. In addition to the radars, the contract also includes application engineering, installation, technical support, commissioning and crew training. Award of the navigation radar contract complements other Marine Systems navigation equipment aboard the DDG 51 Class ships.
