US Navy Awards Maintenance Contracts

The Pentagon last Friday announced that nine companies have been awarded contracts for repair, maintenance and modernization of U.S. Navy’s non-nuclear surface ships homeported or visiting the Northwest United States.The total value of the multiple award contract is a combined $944 million. The scope of work is for continuous maintenance, emergent maintenance, and Chief of Naval Operations availabilities, which are short-term or less than 10-months in duration.The nine companies are East Coast Repair & Fabrication…

Cruising Pause Has Major Impact on Florida's Economy

The cruise industry has certainly been among businesses hardest hit by the economic impacts of COVID-19. But the industry-rocking fallout extends well beyond the cruise lines themselves, extending through cities throughout Florida where canceled sailings are resulting in loss of revenue to public ports, government at all levels, and private companies that do business with cruise lines.These conclusions are contained in the latest Fact Finding 30 report that was released today by Fact Finding Officer Commissioner Louis E. Sola, of the Federal Maritime Commission.

CMA CGM Enters Agreements with CSCL, UASC

The CMA CGM Group announced the signature of three major agreements on the biggest worldwide maritime trades with China Shipping Container Lines (CSCL) and United Arab Shipping Company (UASC). Under the name of Ocean Three, the agreements; which include a combination of vessel sharings, slot exchanges and slot charters; concern the following maritime trades:  Asia-Europe, Asia-Mediterranean, Transpacific and Asia-United States East Coast. On the Asia-US East Coast trade: one service via the Suez Canal and one service dedicated to the Gulf of Mexico. The agreements on the Transatlantic trade are being finalized and will soon be announced. This new offering will combine both speed and reliability.

CMA CGM Proposes New East-West Network

CMA CGM confirms its global development strategy and proposes a new and unique East-West network of services on the following trades: Asia-Europe, Asia-Mediterranean, Transpacific and Asia-United States East Coast. Cut Off

The value of ferry service in the Northwest United States has never been in question, yet last weekend solidified the importance of water transport to the region. Aging infrastructure and poor weather conspired to isolate Port Townsend from the mainland this week, according to a report in the Port Townsend & Jefferson County Leader (www.ptleader.com). Severe weather conspired to close a major roadway, which was closed in three places due to storm damage from a strong storm system. At the same time, Washington State Ferries is grappling with a plan of action on scrapping or saving its aging Steel Electric ferries, ferries with 80-year-old hulls.
