Norwegian Authorities Investigation on HARRIER
The HARRIER is still under arrest in Norway after its owners failed to illegally set sail for the dangerous and dirty scrapping yards in Gadani, Pakistan, last February. The owners are now forced to find a safe and environmentally sound recycling destination. In parallel, investigations are still ongoing following the charges pressed by the Norwegian environmental authorities against the owners of the TIDE CARRIER for having attempted to breach existing waste trade laws. At the edge of bankruptcy, Eide Group sold the previously named EIDE CARRIER, which had been laid up for 10 years, to cash buyer Wirana, a scrap dealer specialized in trading toxic ships to dirty and dangerous scrapping yards in South Asia.

Magnetic Patch Prevents Flooding of Nuclear Fuel Carrier
A magnetic patch made by Miko Marine AS of Norway has been used to seal a leak in the hull of the nuclear waste freighter Puma . The Danish-flagged ship was in danger of sinking on December 18 when it experienced a leak in its engine room while sailing south along the coast of Norway following its delivery of 333 tons of spent nuclear fuel to Murmansk. The ship appealed to the Norwegian Coastguard for help and was allowed to anchor west of the island of Sørøya in the far north of Norway.
Cruise Calls Add Fuel to Energy-Based Arctic Shipping Challenges
Arctic shipping operations are set for dramatic growth due to vast energy resources and a rise in cruise ship calls – but to maximise opportunities, the industry needs urgent solutions to challenges ranging from sovereignty claims to design and crewing for a hostile environment. Some 200 delegates will discuss the latest issues at Arctic Shipping 2008 - the fourth annual conference in the world-leading series from Lloyd’s List Events - which takes place in , from April 8-10. Rolls-Royce Gets Icelandic Coast Guard Contract
Rolls-Royce has won a contract to supply the design and a full equipment package for a multi purpose coastguard vessel to be built by ASMAR in Chile for the government of Iceland. On completion in 2009 the vessel will perform a variety of tasks, including coastguard duties and management of Iceland’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), fishery control, standby and rescue, emergency towing, pollution prevention, oil recovery and firefighting. To meet Iceland’s requirements, UT-Design in Rolls-Royce has developed the UT 512 L. The starting point was the Norwegian coastguard vessel KV Harstad, type UT 512, built for a Norwegian shipowner and chartered to Kystvakt .
