Plea Deal in NCLL Boiler Explosion

The US Attorney for the Southern District of Florida and Norwegian Cruise Line Limited (NCLL) entered into a plea agreement regarding the boiler explosion on the cruise ship NORWAY on May 25, 2003.  As a result of the explosion, eight crewmembers died and ten others were seriously injured.  NCLL agreed to pay a fine of $1 million and to pay restitution to the injured crewmembers and to the families of the deceased in the amount of $13.75 million. Cruise Ship Engineers Indicted

Tom Sansonetti, Assistant Attorney General for the Justice Department’s Environment and Natural Resources Division and Marcos Daniel Jiménez, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida, announced that three senior cruise ship engineers were indicted by a federal grand jury in Miami, Florida, for their role in concealing the overboard dumping of waste oil from the SS Norway cruise ship in false log books designed to deceive the United States Coast Guard. The defendants, Chief Engineers Knut Sorboe and Peter Solemdal, Senior First Engineer Aage Lokkebraten are Norwegian nationals who were employed by Norwegian Cruise Line Limited (NCL) at the time of the offenses.

NCL Pays Fine for Cruise Pollution

As a result of its voluntary reporting of irregularities, Norwegian Cruise Line Limited (NCL) has reached an agreement with the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Florida and the US Department of Justice to plead guilty to a single count of violation of Title 33, U.S.C., Section 1908, for the knowing failure to maintain an accurate Oil Record Book aboard the S.S. Norway prior to May 2000. Under the plea agreement, NCL has agreed to pay a fine of $1 million, be placed on probation, and maintain a comprehensive environmental compliance plan. MTN Signs Agreement With NCL

Maritime Telecommunications Network (MTN), a Verestar company, announced that they have signed a 3-year agreement with Norwegian Cruise Line Limited(NCL) to be the telecommunications provider for the Norwegian Star. MTN, the leader in maritime communications, provides communications facilities for the cruise line industry and maritime vessels by using total global satellite services including C-Band Global Satellite Service, KU-Band.
