US Considers Discouraging Cruise Travel

Norwegian Joy is US Bound

Norwegian Cruise Line’s first ship custom-designed specifically for the Chinese cruise market will be repositioned to sail from the United States starting in 2019.The nearly 4,000 passenger cruise ship Norwegian Joy is slated to sail seasonally from Seattle to Alaska in summer 2019 before making voyages to the Mexican Riviera and Panama Canal from Los Angeles in winter 2019/2020.Built by German shipbuilder Meyer Werft in 2017, the 1,094-foot-long, 167,725 gt Norwegian Joy was designed with finishes and amenities tailored specifically to the tastes of Chinese guests.

Panama Canal Sets Monthly Tonnage Record

Yesterday, for the third time since the inauguration of the Expanded Canal, the Panama Canal set a new monthly tonnage record of 38.1 million tons (PC/UMS) after facilitating the transit of 1,231 vessels in May 2018.The previous record was established in January 2017, when 1,260 vessels transited 36.1 million tons (PC/UMS) through the waterway, just a month after setting the record with 35.4 million tons (PC/UMS) transited by 1,166 vessels in December 2016.The containership segment contributed highest tonnage (36 percent)…

Panama Canal Welcomes Biggest-Ever Passenger Ship

The Panama Canal welcomed the Norwegian Cruise Lines-operated Norwegian Bliss, the largest passenger vessel which to ever transit the waterway. "The Panama Canal is proud to welcome the Norwegian Bliss and recognizes that this distinct milestone is made possible by the Canal Expansion, as well as the experience and efforts gained in the two years since its inauguration," said Deputy Canal Administrator Manuel Benítez. The Norwegian Bliss left Germany's Meyer Werft shipyard in March to begin a 15-day itinerary this month, sailing from Miami, Florida through the Panama Canal and up along the west coast of Central and North America before reaching its final destination at the Port of Los Angeles in California.

Grand Bahama Shipyard and L&R Midland (UK) Ltd have signed an exclusive agency agreement covering the U.K. markets effective June 1, 2017. Caribbean ship repair yard Grand Bahama Shipyard Limited (GBSL) reported a busy 2016 for retrofit, refurbishments and repairs to vessels from the leading cruise lines. GBSL said it performed work on 20 cruise vessels during 2016, with scope of works included significant propulsion and technical systems overhauls, hull treatment, accommodations and public spaces upgrades and the addition of onboard attraction facilities. The trend continues: for 2017, GBSL has confirmed 23 cruise vessels scheduled for refit, refurbishment or revitalization from its customer base.

Europa 2 Set for Maiden Voyage to New Orleans

Cruise Season Kicks off in San Diego

The arrival of Celebrity Cruises' Infinity in San Diego Harbor today officially kicks off cruise season at the Port of San Diego. The 2,170-passenger cruise ship Infinity sailed into San Diego harbor today as part of a nine-night Pacific coastal cruise that begins and ends in San Francisco, making visits to Monterey, Santa Barbara, Catalina and Ensenada. The Port of San Diego currently expects 65 cruise ship arrivals over the course of its cruise season, which runs from September through May.

Ocean Conservancy and NAMEPA Partner to Fight Marine Debris

NAMEPA (North American Marine Environment Protection Association) and the Ocean Conservancy signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) this month, the two group announced in a press release. The agreement aims to foster a collaborative effort that encourages marine pollution prevention, advocates for sensible and sustainable marine environmental practices, and heightens public awareness of impacts and mitigation techniques of marine pollution. Marine debris is one of the most universal problems we face when it comes to having clean and healthy oceans. A primary goal of the MOU is to establish Marina Cleanup Day this June, and encourage recreational boaters and marina staff across the country to help remove trash before it reaches our oceans.

Costa Concordia Used For Mafia Drug Smuggling

The doomed Costa Concordia was carrying a huge shipment of Mafia-owned cocaine when it set off on its final voyage, AP reports quoting investigators who have collected evidence. Authorities have collected phone and tape recordings that show the ‘Ndrangheta Calabrian criminal organization was behind the smuggling. 'Ndrangheta had its drugs hidden aboard the huge cruise ship that partially capsized in January 2012 with the loss of 32 lives, evidences have revealed. "The same ship that made us a laughing stock around the world, took the piss out of us, too," 'Ndrangheta boss Michele Rossi is heard saying to an associate, Massimo Tiralongo, according to police officers investigating the organization’s vast cocaine-trafficking operation.

USCG Presents William M. Benkert Awards
