MPC Container Ships Orders Two "Carbon-neutral" Container Ships

Norwegian shipowner MPC Container Ships has contracted two carbon-neutral 1,300 TEU newbuildings at Chinese-based shipyard Taizhou Sanfu Ship Engineering for delivery in the second half of 2024.The vessels come with a dual fuel engine setup which enables operation on methanol as well as conventional MGO.The company said the order woul allow it to "take a significant leap forward in its commitment to use carbon-neutral solutions in regional container trades together with strong partners."The vessels come with 15-year time charters to North Sea Container Line AS (NCL), backed by CoAs from variou

World's First Emissions-free Containership Yara Birkeland Christened

Yara Birkeland, the world’s first electric, autonomous container vessel, was christened in Norway on Friday.The battery-driven vessel completed its maiden voyage in November 2021 and is due to enter service this year, transporting fertilizer across the fjord from Yara International’s Porsgrunn plant to Brevik port, eliminating the carbon emissions of 40,000 diesel truck loads per year, Yara said. Norway Supports GreenVoyage-2050 Project

Partnerships and innovations are essential to combat climate change through reductions in GHG emissions. Norway has provided an additional NOK 40,000,000 (US$4.3. million) to the International Maritime Organization (IMO)-Norway GreenVoyage-2050 project, which will support GHG reductions in line with the IMO initial strategy for reducing greenhouse gas emissions from shipping.This supports UN SDG 13 on climate action. SeaDream Innovation Emphasizes Sustainability

Developing a Roadmap for Green Coastal Shipping

The Norwegian authorities’ target for 2030 is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 40% compared to what they were 40 years earlier. By doing so, Norway will set the direction for the shipping industry and continue to be a front-runner. The entire Norwegian shipping industry as well as the Norwegian authorities have gathered to create the Green Coastal Shipping Programme. The programme participants are now ready to share their views and recommend progress in a roadmap addressed to the Norwegian Government. “Our vision is to go further into the future to ensure that Norway has established the world’s most efficient and environmentally friendly coastal shipping by 2050.

Greenpeace Activists in Hands of Police

The activists on board the Transocean Spitsbergen are now in the hands of Norwegian police. The rig was on its way for planned exploration drilling in the Hoop-area in the Barents Sea when Greenpeace activists boarded the rig in the early hours of Tuesday, 27 May. Statoil is very pleased that the illegal action on the rig now has ended without anyone being injured. The rig will now prepare for transit to the drilling site for the Apollo well in the Hoop area. Statoil has a permit to start the drilling operations, but awaits a final decision on a Greenpeace appeal to the Norwegian Ministry of climate and environment before drilling into oil-bearing layers.

On the morning of 27 May Greenpeace activists boarded the drilling rig Transocean Spitsbergen. The rig was en route to the Hoop area in the Barents Sea. On Monday Statoil got approval from the Norwegian Ministry of Climate and Environment to start drilling operations tied to the Apollo prospect in the Hoop area. The company is not allowed to drill into oil-bearing layers until the complaint from Greenpeace has been dealt with by the ministry. Statoil respects the right for legal protests and believes it is important with a democratic debate on the oil and industry.

Industry Targets Improved Offshore Leak Detection

Leak detection is a considerable challenge facing the industry, and DNV GL has therefore taken the lead in establishing a new Joint Industry Project (JIP). Twenty key industry players are partnering to develop a best practice for designing and implementing offshore leak detection systems. Over the last few years, following several oil releases, there has been an increasing focus by both operators and authorities on the environmental impact related to offshore oil and gas activities.
