Gielle’s Novec 1230 Plant is MED Approved

Gielle presents a  new installation on the base of Novec1230 fluid firefighting system for extinguishing fires in engine rooms, pump rooms, transformer rooms and electrical rooms, for ship and offshore applications. The Gielle firefighting system can replace, without significant modifications, older systems using Halon, Halotron IIB, carbon dioxide and water mist on board ships. The firefighting system designed by Gielle has passed approval tests and has certifications and approvals from most of the major classification societies. The Gielle solution can detect the development of the fire in a few seconds, extinguish it automatically and rapidly and, as a result, limit damage to a minimum. It also has a series of benefits for the environment and in other areas.

Offshore Workboat Fire Safety

A Novec 1230 gas suppression system provides a unique, Class-compliant and effective margin of safety for an offshore dive support vessel. Despite the recent drop in oil prices, the marine sector remains extremely busy supporting the oil industry, and this will always remain the case. The squeeze on contractual pricing and labor is a recent issue caused by that drop in oil prices. Fortunately, the sector is led by legislation in the form of IMO/SOLAS regulations and respective Flag State requirements which are controlled by regulatory authorities such as DNV…

Steve Pelletier, business development manager, Tyco Marine Services, is a former member of the United States Coast Guard, Steve holds associate degrees in science and electronics engineering. He has worked in the fire protection industry since 1996.

There are roughly 30 liquified natural gas (LNG)-powered marine vessels currently active in today’s global seas, with some estimates showing approximately 30 new builds expected by 2014. With new commitments and orders for LNG-powered ships taking place every month, the potential that LNG-powered vessels will play an important part in shaping the future of the maritime industry is no longer speculation – it is now a fact. 20 Seconds to Comply ...

Alternatives to Carbon Dioxide fire suppression systems can provide the performance without the activation delay according to  Kristin Øgaard of Norway’s Autronica Fire and Security AS. With the phase out for environmental reasons of fire suppression systems using Halon gas starting in 1994, the use of Carbon Dioxide (CO2) as a fire suppressant has become typical both on land and at sea. Today, CO2 fire suppression systems can be found in engine rooms and cargo areas on board…

Sea-Fire Offers 3M NOVEC 1230 Fire Protection

The halon and CO2 replacement has virtually no Global Warming Potential (GWP), is non-toxic and won't harm delicate electronics. "GWP has moved to the forefront as a major environmental concern," said Sea-Fire president Ernie Ellis. "In the 1990s, Sea-Fire addressed ozone depletion with FM-200. Novec 1230 also has zero ozone depletion potential, but a GWP of just one. Compared to halon's atmospheric life span of 300 years, Novec 1230's is only 5 days. "More and more countries, authorities and consumers require or opt for environmentally sound products," Ellis continued.
