26 Hours of Information Recovered from El Faro's VDR

A group led by the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has gathered information from the recovered voyage data recorder (VDR) of sunken cargo ship El Faro to develop a detailed transcript of the sounds and discernible words captured on the ship’s bridge before sinking during Hurricane Joaquin in October 2015. In all about 26 hours of information was recovered from the VDR, including bridge audio, weather data and navigational data. The voyage data recorder (VDR) from El Faro, a U.S. flagged cargo ship that sank during Hurricane Joaquin in October 2015, has been recovered from the ocean floor late Monday evening, the U.S. National Transportation Board (NTSB) said. The recovery of the capsule caps a 10-month-long effort to retrieve the recorder, which was designed to record navigational data and communications between crewmembers on the ship’s bridge. Investigators hope the recorder will reveal information about the final hours of El Faro’s voyage and the circumstances leading up to the sinking.

Investigators Set Mission to Recover El Faro’s VDR

The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said it is set to launch a mission to recover the voyage data recorder (VDR) of sunken cargo ship El Faro. The VDR, belonging to U.S. flagged El Faro which sank during Hurricane Joaquin last October, was located April 26 in about 15,000 feet of water near the Bahamas. NTSB Reveals Details on Norway Investigation

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has updated information on its investigation of the boiler explosion aboard the Norwegian Cruise Line vessel NORWAY while moored in Port of Miami in Miami, Fla. They have confirmed that 2,135 passengers and 911 crew aboard the vessel. The explosion killed 7 crewmembers and injured over a dozen others. All passengers were evacuated safely. The NTSB investigation into the boiler room explosion on board the Bahamian cruise ship Norway continues in the data collection phase, but investigators have completed nearly 200 personal interviews with ship's officers, crewmen and company officials.
