Mackay Marine Outfits Kitsap Transit's New Ferries

Mackay Marine said it provided marine electronics systems and technologies for Kitsap Transit's two new 250-passenger vessels built by Nichols Brothers Boat Builders (NBBB).Bremerton, Wash.-based public transit agency ordered the new vessels in December 2018 to provide expedient commuter services to downtown Seattle from both Kingston, Wash. and a planned Southworth, Wash. route.The bow-loading fast ferries, built by NBBB at its Whidbey Island, Wash. shipyard, are state-of-the-art, low-wake vessels.

Engine Contract Awarded for LCS 27

Fairbanks Morse said it has been selected to build and deliver the main propulsion diesel engines (MPDE) that will power the U.S. Navy’s newest Freedom class Littoral Combat Ship, LCS 27. Construction of the engines will begin later this year, and they are scheduled to be delivered in 2019 to Marinette Marine Corporation in Marinette, Wis., where the new warship is being built. The engine manufacturer will then support installation and testing including sea trials for the vessel. The two 16-cylinder Colt-Pielstick PA6B STC diesel engines will deliver over 12 MW of propulsion power and are among the largest medium speed diesel engines manufactured in the U.S. The U.S.

Rolls-Royce Wins USCG OPC Propulsion Contract

Rolls-Royce will provide an extensive range of equipment, including MTU marine generator sets, to a new fleet of U.S. Coast Guard Offshore Patrol Cutters (USCG OPC). The Rolls-Royce equipment was selected by Eastern Shipbuilding Group (ESG) Inc. for the USCG OPC fleet’s first nine vessels, with an option to add two more. GE Gas Turbines Earn LR Design Appraisal to Marine NVR

GE Marine’s LM6000 aeroderivative marine gas turbine PC and PG models have received Lloyd’s Register’s Design Appraisal Document to the Marine Naval Vessel Rules (NVR). According to Ge, the fuel-efficient LM6000 simple-cycle gas turbine delivers over 40% thermal efficiency. The OPC Sweepstakes: Three for the Money

In February, the U.S. Coast Guard chose three finalists to design its new Offshore Patrol Cutters, with awards to Bollinger Shipyards in Lockport, La., Eastern Shipbuilding Group in Panama City, Fla. and General Dynamics’ Bath Iron Works in Maine. Each company was awarded a Phase I design contract valued at between $21 million and $22 million. At the end of the 18-month Preliminary and Contract Design Phase I, the Coast Guard will choose one company’s team for a Phase II Detailed Design and Construction contract for the lead OPC.

Rolls-Royce congratulates US Navy on christening of USS Zumwalt

Rolls-Royce congratulated the US Navy on the christening of the USS Zumwalt, the first of its new and highly sophisticated DDG 1000 multi-mission destroyer class of ship. The 600 foot long all-electric ship was christened by sponsors Ann Zumwalt and Mouzetta Zumwalt-Weathers at Bath Iron Works in Maine during a ceremony attended by thousands of people, including The Honorable Ray Mabus, the Secretary of the Navy, and other dignitaries. NSRP Approves $1.4m in Shipbuilding Program Funds

As part of the National Shipbuilding Research Program’s (NSRP) core mission to reduce the costs associated with Navy shipbuilding and repair, the NSRP Executive Control Board has selected 15 new research and development projects for award, totaling approximately $1.4M. The NSRP Executive Control Board allocates funds on an approximately annual basis to fund a portfolio of relatively small, short timeframe projects - one year or less, $100K or less. The Project Portfolio contains summary information on all current and completed NSRP projects. NSRP Approves $1.2M for New Projects

As part of the National Shipbuilding Research Program’s (NSRP) core mission to reduce the costs associated with Navy shipbuilding and repair, the NSRP Executive Control Board has selected 14 new research and development projects for award, totaling approximately $1.2M. These projects will be executed under the purview of the 10 NSRP communities of practice known as the Ship Production Panels. Focus and interest among panel members regularly reveal relevant project opportunities which may not be well suited for larger-scale funding via the primary NSRP solicitation process. The Board therefore typically sets aside an amount of money each year to fund relatively small (less than $100K), short-term (12 months or less) projects recommended by the Panel Chairs.

New Navy Contracts

Naval Vessel Rules Agreement Signed Between ABS and NAVSEA

ABS has signed a formal Cooperative Agreement with the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) further strengthening its longstanding relationship with the US Navy. The agreement calls for joint development of ABS Naval Vessel Rules (NVR) to support the design and acquisition of Naval Combatant Ships and Craft. The landmark agreement signed by VADM Phillip M.
