NYC Exploring Ways to Move More Freight Via Waterways

New York City is looking at ways to help shift freight transportation off of its busy roads and onto the waterways.The city's Department of Transportation (NYC DOT) and Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) on Wednesday jointly released a Request for Information and Expressions of Interest (RFEI) seeking private sector feedback to help it gauge industry challenges and opportunities, and explore ways to implement and support businesses to engage in waterfront freight operations.The initiative is part of NYC's "Blue Highways" program, launched under the city's previous mayor, Bill de Blasio.

Hundreds Evacuated from Staten Island Ferry After Engine Room Fire

Eastern Completes First Ollis Class Vessel for Staten Island Ferry

(ESG) announced it has completed the first of three new Staten Island “Ollis Class” ferries for the City of New York Department of Transportation (NYCDOT) Staten Island Ferry Division. The MV SSG Michael H. Ollis, Hull 219, departed ESG’s Port St. Joe, Fla. facility fully certified and passenger ready.Dann Ocean Towing’s Colonel is towing the ferry on a 12-dray trip to New York City. Upon arrival, the ferry will be staged at Caddell Dry Dock for cleaning and another round of trials and training.

Steel Cut for New Staten Island Ferry

The City of New York Department of Transportation (NYCDOT) Staten Island Ferry Division and Eastern Shipbuilding Group, Inc. (ESG) cut steel to officially begin the construction of the first of three new 320’ Staten Island Ollis Class Ferries. The steel cutting ceremony held August 29, 2017 took place in Eastern’s steel processing and pre-fabrication building at its Allanton facility in Panama City, Fla. Attending the ceremony from Staten Island Ferry Division was John Collins, Director of Ferry Engineering and Bill Tomalonis, Vessel Construction Manager SIF Division.

EBDG to Design New Class of Staten Island Ferries

Elliott Bay Design Group (EBDG), a naval architecture and marine engineering firm with offices in Seattle, New Orleans and Ketchikan, Ala., has been selected by the New York Department of Transportation (NYC DOT) to design a new class of ferries that will operate between the boroughs of Staten Island and Manhattan. The project scope consists of a complete design package, including contract drawings, specifications and other documents for vessels to replace the existing Barberi and Kennedy Class ferries. Also included in the scope are modifications to the existing Molinari Class ferries to retrofit a new propulsion system, something the city says is necessary to establish consistency between the new ferries and those that will remain in the fleet. Examining Hull Pressure on the Staten Island Ferries

MARIN’s Depressurized Wave Basin was the site for a test of the best propulsor configuration for the Staten Island ferries.

For the first time an investigation into Voith Schneider Propulsor-induced hull-pressure fluctuations has been carried out. This investigation was part of a New York City Department of Transportation (NYCDOT) study to retrofit the Molinari Class Ferries, which operate to the world-renowned Staten Island, with Voith Schneider Propulsion (VSP). NTSB Findings on 2010 Staten Island Ferry Accident Published

On May 8, 2010, the 310-foot-long passenger ferry Andrew J. Barberi lost propulsion control of one its two cycloidal propellers as the vessel approached St. George terminal, Staten Island, New York. The loss of propulsion control resulted from a solenoid failure in one of the vessel's propulsion control panels. The crewmembers on board the Andrew J. Barberi were unaware that the propeller failed to respond to their commands until seconds before the ferry struck the terminal. A total of 266 persons, including 244 passengers, were on board the vessel. As a result of the accident, three passengers were seriously injured and more than 40 passengers and crew reported minor injuries. The Andrew J.

Last of Three Built for NYC's DOT

Marinette Marine Corporation, a subsidiary of The Manitowoc Company, Inc. launched the ferry Spirit of America for New York City's Department of Transportation (NYC DOT) on December 18. This 310- ft. ferry is the third of three Staten Island Ferries to be built as part of a $120-million contract that was awarded to Manitowoc in 2001. The ships are the largest ever launched at the Marinette Marine facility. The launch featured Margaret Gordon, Executive Director of Safety and Security for the Staten Island Ferries, performing the traditional christening ceremony. The New York City Department of Transportation (NYCDOT) announced that Derecktor Shipyards Connecticut had been chosen as the selected supplier for a five year service and supply contract for maintenance and repair of the Austen Class Staten Island Ferry Boats. Investigation Begins on Fatal Ferry Crash

Investigation begins on yesterday's ferry accident that has seriously injured several passengers and killed 10. A Staten Island Ferry crashed as it was docking Wednesday afternoon, severely injuring several passengers and killing at least 10. As New York City rush hour began to peak, the incident occurred at about 3:20 p.m., as the vessel was en route to dock at the St. George Terminal on the Staten Island end of its Manhattan commuter route. According to reports, the front end of the ferry suffered damage to the right side of the hull.

Safety Board Determines Cause of SI Ferry Accident

The National Transportation Safety Board today determined that the probable cause of a fatal accident involving a Staten Island ferry was the assistant captain's unexplained incapacitation and the failure of the New York City Department of Transportation (NYC DOT) to implement and oversee safe, effective operating procedures for its ferries. On October 15, 2003, the Staten Island ferry Andrew J. Barberi, owned and operated by the NYC DOT, was at the end of a regularly scheduled trip from Manhattan to Staten Island when it struck a maintenance pier at the Staten Island Ferry terminal. Fifteen crewmembers and an estimated 1,500 passengers were on board. Ten passengers died in the accident and 70 were injured.
