World's First: Japanese Firms to Looking to Build Sustainable Bulk Carriers for Copper Transport from Chile

Japan's NYK Line said Thursday its NYK Bulk & Project Carriers Ltd. (NBP), Oshima Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (OSHIMA), and Sumitomo Corporation (SUMITOMO) had signed a memorandum of understanding to study, design, and construct the world’s first Handymax bulk carrier (ammonia dual fuel type) dedicated to the transport of copper products, that will reduce CO2 emissions to zero.The MoU signing comes just a year after Corporación Nacional del Cobre de Chile (CODELCO), a Chilean state-owned company and one of the world's leading copper producers, and NYK Bulk & Project Carriers Ltd.

NYK's First Domestic CTV Named "Rera As"

Siemens Gamesa Charters NYK CTV for Japanese Offshore Wind Farm

Siemens Gamesa and the Japanese shipping and logistics company NYK have signed a time charter contract for a crew transfer vessel (CTV) that will be used at an offshore wind farm in Japan.The CTV will be owned by NYK and managed by Hokkaido-based Hokuyo Kaiun Co., Ltd., an NYK Group company. The vessel will be engaged in transporting workers to the offshore wind farm at Ishikari Bay New Port in Japan, which is scheduled to start commercial operation in December 2023.The Ishikari Bay New Port offshore wind farm project is being developed by Green Power Ishikari LLC…

NYK to Modify Tugboat to Ammonia Fuel at Keihin Dock Co.

NYK finalized a contract with Keihin Dock Co., Ltd., an NYK Group company, to modify a tugboat to ammonia-fuel specifications. Sakigake, a tugboat currently fueled by liquefied natural gas (LNG) and operated in Tokyo Bay by NYK Group company Shin-Nippon Kaiyosha Corporation will be converted to operate on ammonia fuel by a target completion year of 2024.This R&D was initiated in October 2021 by NYK and IHI Power Systems Co., Ltd.

Autonomous Containership Trialed in Japan

The methanol-fueled chemical tanker Grouse Sun, owned by NYK Bulkship (Asia) Pte. Ltd., an NYK Group company based in Singapore, was delivered on April 19. The vessel was built at Hyundai Mipo Dockyard in Korea.Grouse Sun has been equipped with a dual-fuel engine that can use not only heavy fuel oil but also methanol. When navigating using methanol as fuel, the vessel has a new technology that suppresses the production of NOx (nitrogen oxides) by adding water to methanol to lower its temperature during combustion.

NYK, ABS, WinGD Working on Battery-Hybrid System to Cut GHG Emissions from Ships

NYK and NYK Group company MTI Co., Ltd. (“MTI”), together with the American Bureau of Shipping (“ABS”) and Winterthur Gas & Diesel Ltd. ("WinGD"), have started joint research for optimization of ship design by utilizing a battery-hybrid system to aid ship propulsion and thus reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from vessels.A vessel’s main-engine revolutions may increase significantly when a vessel tries to maintain its sailing speed during strong waves and winds.This phenomenon is called “load fluctuation.” The shaft generator may also increase the burden on the main engine.

NYK Inks Charter Deal for Pair of Methanol-fueled Chem Tankers

NYK Bulkship (Asia) Pte. Ltd., an NYK Group company based in Singapore, signed a long-term time charter contract with Waterfront Shipping Company Limited (WFS) for two newly built chemical carriers, each equipped with a dual-fuel engine that enables the vessels to be powered not only by marine fuel oil but also methanol.Planned for delivery from the Hyundai Mipo Dockyard (Korea) in 2022, the vessels will be delivered to WFS, a wholly owned subsidiary of Methanex Corporation, the world’s largest producer and supplier of methanol.

RoRo Carrier Rescues Fishermen in Strait of Malacca

An Indonesia-flagged car carrier operated by the NYK Group company PT. NYK-SPIL INDORORO, rescued eight fishermen in distress at the Strait of Malacca last week.The 100-meter roll-on, roll-off (RoRo) ship Kalimantan Leader was sailing from Belawan, Indonesia, to Jakarta, on September 23 when its crew spotted eight fishermen in the water after their vessel sank.The merchant vessel rescued the distressed fishermen immediately, and the eight men were transferred in to an Indonesian Coast Guard vessel on September 24 off Batam Island, Indonesia. NYK Completes 100th LNG Bunkering Ops

Japan's first LNG-fueled vessel, the tugboat Sakigake, on January 23 was supplied with LNG as fuel for the 100th time since the tugboat’s delivery in 2015.The vessel is owned by Japanese shipping company Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK) and operated by Shin-Nippon Kaiyosha, an NYK Group company.The LNG bunkering was conducted safely and efficiently from a tank truck at the No. 5 quay of Shinko, Yokohama, said a press release from the Tokyo-headquartered global logistics enterprise."NYK is making use of the expertise and know-how the company has obtained through LNG transportation over the years to expand its wide range of businesses to LNG-fuel supply and sale.

Dualog, NYK Sign Cyber-Risk Contract

Japanese shipping company NYK has signed  a long-term industrial research and development project agreement with Tromsø-based Dualog which aims to result in a cutting-edge Cyberrisk Management System for vessels.The project announced today at the Norwegian Embassy in Tokyo will receive two years of funding from the Norwegian government fund Innovation Norway.The agreement will see the development of digitized products and services across a test-bed of 50 vessels with a view to eventually being rolled out across NYKs self-operated fleet of 250 ships.The accord follows hot on the heels of a strategic partnership both companies signed in the summer of 2017…

Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK Group) has taken delivery of Takaroa Sun, a methanol carrier equipped with two-stroke dual-fuel engine tech that allows the vessel to be powered by methanol. Built in South Korea at Hyundai MIPO Dockyard, the new ship was funded through NYK’s green financing initiative established to support environment-friendly projects.Takaroa Sun was built with the MAN Energy Solutions second-generation B&W ME-LGIM two-stroke dual-fuel engine that runs on both methanol and conventional marine fuel.

JMS Welcomes Sea Cadets

NYK Group to Build New Heavy-lift Vessels

NYK Bulk & Projects Carriers Ltd., an NYK Group company and the only shipping company that owns and operates heavy-lift ships in Japan, signed a contract with Nanjing Jinling Shipyard Co. Ltd., which is part of the China Merchants Group, to build a pair of heavy-lift vessels. The ships will be equipped with a pair of 400-ton cranes and be able to lift up to 800 tons of heavy cargo. The hold will be about 95 meters in length at its maximum without any bulkheads, i.e., upright walls within the hold.

NBP Orders 2 Heavy Lift Vessels at CSC Jinling

The NYK group company, NYK Bulk & Projects Carriers Ltd. (NBP) has signed the contract with Nanjing Jinling Shipyard (CSC Jinling), which is part of the China Merchants Group, to build two next-generation energy-saving heavy-lift vessels.Each vessel will be equipped with two 400-ton cranes; cargo up to 800 tons will be able to be loaded through tandem operation.The  vessel will have one hatch and one hold, and the hold shape will be an open-hatch type, making the vessels very efficient for cargo handling and reducing cargo damage.The on-deck length will be about 110 meters, and the in-hold length will be about 95 meters at a maximum.

NYK Tops Green Flag Program

Japanese shipping giant Nippon Yūsen Kabushiki Kaisha or NYK Line has been recognized as one of the top shipping lines in the Green Flag vessel speed reduction program that the Port of Long Beach has been conducting to improve air quality.It was the 10th consecutive recognition for NYK since 2009, the the largest marine transporter in Japan said.The Green Flag program aims to restrain exhaust emissions from vessels by having them voluntarily operate under 12 knots within 40 miles of port.In 2018, all NYK-operated vessels that called at Long Beach scored an extraordinary compliance rating of 100 percent, and NYK was praised for its contribution to the exhaust gas cut.NYK Bulk & Projects Carriers Ltd.…

NYK Conducts Crisis-response Drill with ONE

Japanese shipping line Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK) conducted a crisis-response drill based on the scenario of a serious fire occurring on a containership operated by Ocean Network Express  (ONE), an integrated global container shipping company headquartered in Singapore.The drill scenario had a fire breaking out inside a containership while the ship was at Tokyo’s Oi Container Terminal.The drill continued with an assumed explosion followed by fire-fighting, rescue of the injured, and evacuation of neighborhoods. The drill had the vessel managed by NYK Shipmanagement Pte. Ltd. (NYKSM), an NYK Group company.A total of 60 related parties from NYK, NYKSM, ONE’s headquarters in Singapore, and ONE’s Japan branch participated in the drill.
