Siemens Gamesa Enters Japan Offshore Market

Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy (SGRE) has secured its first preferred supplier nomination in the Japanese offshore wind sector, winning a preferred supplier status for a 455-MW project in Akita prefecture.The agreement with Obayashi Corporation currently includes using SG 8.0-167 DD offshore wind turbines for the Northern Akita Offshore Wind Farm project, a deal which includes a long-term service agreement, with commercial operation scheduled to start in 2024. All deliveries are subject to Obayashi Corporation’s final investment decision.The Northern Akita pipeline will reach a capacity of up to 455 MW at a site located in the northern region of Tohoku, Japan.

Imabari Invests in Shipbuilding

Imabari Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. secured newbuild orders with the cooperation of Marubeni Corporation for eleven 20,000TEU Ultra-Large Container Carriers, when delivered the largest containerships in the world. The new ships, the first of which is scheduled to be completed in early 2018, will measure approximately 400m long and 59m wide. Imabari has built more than 200 container carriers, including the 4,800TEU Over-Panamax type in 1995 that was then the largest in the world, as well as the 8,100TEU type in 2008. In March this year, 14,000TEU type, now the largest in Japan, is scheduled to be completed. Imabari explained it has been developing large size container carriers in response to increasing oceangoing cargo movement globally.

Imabari to Build 20,000TEU Containerships

Imabari Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. announced it has secured newbuild orders with the cooperation of Marubeni Corporation for 11 units of 20,000TEU Ultra-Large Container Carriers, the largest type containerships in the world as of today. The new ships, the first of which is scheduled to be completed in early 2018, will measure approximately 400 meters in length with about 59 meters breadth. The newbuilding vessels have been developed for overseas shipowners, fully adopting eco-friendly feature and most advanced energy efficiency technology, the builder said. Imabari has built more than 200 container carriers, including the 4,800TEU Over-Panamax type in 1995 that was then the largest in the world, as well as the 8,100TEU type in 2008.

Imabari to Construct Newbuilding Dry Dock

In order to accommodate construction of Ultra-Large newbuilding vessels including recently secured 20,000TEU Mega container ships (about 400m in length and about 59m breadth), Imabari Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. has decided to construct a large newbuilding dry dock of about 600m length x 80m breadth on the reclaimed land (about 100,000㎡) which is located next to our Marugame Headquarters (Marugame City). The reclaimed land was sold off by the Marugame City Land Development Public Corporations. The new dry dock construction permit has already been granted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism. Its construction will start from next month…

Tsunami-proof Breakwater Designed to Rise Up from Sea Bed

A Japanese consortium to build a Vertical Telescopic Breakwater (VTB), for Shimotsu Harbour. Obayashi Corporation, TOA Corporation, & Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Bridge & Steel Structures Engineering Co., Ltd. (MBE) a wholly owned subsidiary of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI),will begin construction of a Vertical Telescopic Breakwater (VTB), a buoyancy-driven vertical piling breakwater, in the harbor at Shimotsu in Wakayama Prefecture. Construction is scheduled to begin in early October 2012. The breakwater system is designed to swiftly rise from the sea bottom in the event of tsunami, and contribute to prevention or mitigation of tsunami impact to harbors and coastal areas. When completed, it will be the first such movable steel pipe breakwater system in the world.
