Texas A&M Partners with Great Lakes to Open Dredging Lab

The United States' largest dredging contractor Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Corporation announced it has signed an agreement with the College of Engineering at Texas A&M University to provide funding and technical support for what will become the Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Laboratory of Dredging and Coastal Studies.Lasse Petterson from Great Lakes commented, “Our company has had a long and robust relationship with Texas A&M that has included research, participation in dredging short courses, and advocacy for the ocean and coastal engineering profession.

JASNAOE Awards Go to MOL Group

Japanese shipping giant Mitsui O.S.K. Hikawa Maru's Technological Links to Showa Era

Hikawa Maru, which is owned by Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK)x, has been recognized by the Japan Society of Naval Architects and Ocean Engineers (JASNAOE) as a cargo-passenger ship that conveys the story of maritime technology in the early Showa era.On July 20, a ceremony was held at Meiji Kinenkan in Tokyo, and Norio Kanaya, the 28th captain of Hikawa Maru, received the recognition.This honor was introduced last year by JASNAOE and is given to vessels that have historical, academic, and technical value, promote public understanding, and are seen as symbols of cultural heritage for future generations.Hikawa Maru is the only existing large-scale cargo-passenger ship built in Japan before the war, and is currently moored at Yamashita Park in Yokohama as a museum ship open to the public.

MOL Truth Earned 'Ship of the Year 2017'

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL)  announced that 20,000 TEU containership, MOL Truth(Note), one of the world's largest containerships, has received the "Ship of the Year 2017" award from the Japan Society of Naval Architects and Ocean Engineers (JASNAOE). The award is given for the highest levels of technology, design, and social responsibility among vessels made in Japan by JASNAOE. The MOL Truth earned high evaluations as a cutting-edge "eco ship" that not only exemplifies MOL's safe operation and environmental conservation policies, but also makes full use of the most advanced telecommunication and IoT/AI technologies. PBES Hires Christensen to Develop Mediterranean Markets

Plan B Energy Storage (PBES) has announced Sven Thy Christensen has joined the firm to develop marine and power markets in the Mediterranean region. Christensen brings decades of experience of green solutions for ship efficiency, emissions reduction, and power generation including diesel and gas generation, wind, and solar energy. Christensen comes from Odense Maritime Technology, where he held the position as Sales & Business Development Director. Prior to this he worked for MAN Diesel & Turbo in Spain.

Kinkasan Maru Gets Ship Heritage Certificate

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) announced that the engine control console installed on the bridge of the Kinkasan Maru was selected for a "Ship Heritage Certificate" from the Japan Society of Naval Architects and Ocean Engineers (JASNAOE). Kinkasan Maru (1961-1979) was a general cargo ship, built at Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding  Tamano Shipyard in 1961, and operated by MOL. The society noted that the Kinkasan Maru's system represented a pioneering step in the development of automated engines. It was world's first automated ship, which adopted both the bridge control system - directly operating the main engine from the bridge, and the central monitoring control system - intensively monitoring and controlling the engine room machinery in the control room on the lower level of the engine room.

MOL Methanol Carriers Win Technology Awards

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) announced that a series of three MOL-operated 50,000 DWT methanol carriers — the Taranaki Sun, Manchac Sun, and Cajun Sun - received the "Technology Special Prize" in the Ship of the Year 2016 awards sponsored by The Japan Society of Naval Architects and Ocean Engineers (JASNAOE). Every year, the Ship of the Year judges select the made-in-Japan vessels that represent the highest levels of technology, design and social responsibility. The Technology Special Prize goes to the most technologically advanced ships, and only four vessels, including the series of three MOL methanol carriers selected this year, have received this award.

MOL Confirms 2% in Average CO2 Reduction

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) has announced that the company has completed an in-service demonstration test of a wind resistance-reducing windshield for containerships, and determined that the device reduces emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) by an average of 2%. The windshield, co-developed by MOL, was installed on the bow of its operated containership, MOL Marvel, for the demonstration test. Confirmed about 2% average CO2 reduction after installing the windshield on the bow and sailing at 17 knots per hour, compared to operating an identical vessel at the same speed without the device installed. Founded in 1958, the firm specializes in commercial and public sector vessels including research vessels, passenger/car ferries, tugs, barges, dredges, and special purpose platforms. Consulting and design services include hull, structural, mechanical, and electrical systems design. Glosten has a staff of 77 associates, including 36 professionally licensed engineers, supported by other engineers, marine designers, and production staff.

Ship of the Year Award for NYK Vessel

Japan's first LNG-fueled ship, Sakigake, which is a tugboat owned by NYK has been recognized with a Technology Special Award at the 2015 Ship of the Year Awards sponsored by the Japan Society of Naval Architects and Ocean Engineers (JASNAOE). An awards ceremony was held on July 7 at the Kaiun Club in Tokyo. This is the 26th year that JASNAOE has recognized the most technically advanced, well-designed, and socially conscious vessels built in Japan, and Sakigake was noted by manufacturers and related organizations for the tugboat’s environmental performance, design, and technological developments. And this is not the first time for the NYK Group to be honored.

Marine Design Conference Wraps Up in Tokyo

The 12th International Marine Design Conference (IMDC) was held in Tokyo from May 11-14, hosted by The Japan Society of Naval Architects and Ocean Engineers, and sponsored by The Shipbuilders' Association of Japan and ClassNK. IMDC is a global academic conference for the design of marine systems including ships. Since its inception in the U.K. in 1982, it has taken place every three years with this week’s conference marking its 12th conference. This is the second time the IMDC has been held in Japan; it took place in Kobe in 1991 for its fourth conference.

JASNAOE Award for MOL Energy Recovery System

Mitsui OSK Lines, Ltd. today announced receipt of the 2014 Japan Society of Naval Architects and Ocean Engineers (JASNAOE) Award for development of a waste heat energy recovery system for marine diesel engine used to generate electric power and assist ship propulsion. The system was installed on a MOL-operated large-scale iron ore carrier. The award was made in ceremonies held in Sendai International Center, Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture, Japan, on May 26, 2014. The system was jointly developed by MOL, Namura Shipbuilding Co., Ltd.

'National Marine Technology Week' Date Set

Congressmen Farr and Young introduce a bi-partisan Congressional Resolution designating September 22, 2013 through September 28, 2013, as “National Marine Technology Week”. Resolution coincides with the 50th anniversary of the Marine Technology Society and OCEANS 2013 in San Diego. Drew Michel Inducted into ADCI Diving Hall of Fame

Washington, D.C. – The Marine Technology Society (MTS) announced the induction of President‐Elect Drew Michel into the Association of Diving Contractors International (ADCI) Commercial Diving Hall of Fame. The event was held at the awards ceremony during the 20th Annual Underwater Intervention Conference, held earlier this year in New Orleans, La., and co‐sponsored by the MTS Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) Committee and ADCI. Drew was honored for his nearly 50‐year commitment to operational safety and effectiveness. The ADCI Commercial Diving Hall of Fame recognizes and honors the lifetime achievement of those individuals whose dedication and accomplishments have significantly contributed to commercial diving.
