Maersk Supports Maritime Education in South Africa

Lawhill provides secondary-school students in Grades 10 to 12 with a specialized education and knowledge that prepares them for entry into maritime and related industries. For more than two decades, the industry-funded program has greatly improved the post-school employment prospects of thousands of young South Africans, especially those from financially-disadvantaged backgrounds.A special event was held at Lawhill to commemorate the 25 year milestone and the retirement of long-standing maritime educators, Brian Ingpen and Captain Godfrey Schlemmer.

CMA CGM Upgrades NEMO service

Shipping group CMA CGM has reinforced its Europe / Indian Ocean & Australia offering by upgrading its NEMO service, which liaises North Europe and the Mediterranean to the Indian Ocean Islands and Australia on the southbound leg and Australia to southeast Asia and Europe on the northbound leg.This upgraded service will be effective in September 2019 and operated in partnership with MSC, subject to applicable filing requirements.CMA CGM said the new offer will feature an upgraded fleet and provide expanded port coverage through a better utilization of hubs offering dedicated feeder services.

MH370 Report to Be Released after Latest Search Ends

The full investigation report into the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 will be released after the latest search efforts are completed, officials said on Thursday, four years after the aircraft first went missing. Flight MH370, carrying 239 people onboard, became one of the world's greatest aviation mysteries when it disappeared on its way from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing on March 8, 2014. Malaysia agreed in January to pay U.S. firm Ocean Infinity up to $70 million if it found the plane during an offshore search effort that is underway and expected to end in June.

Search Resumes for Malaysian Flight MH370

A U.S.-based company has begun searching for Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370, Malaysia said on Tuesday, as it tries to solve one of the world's greatest aviation mysteries. Flight MH370 disappeared en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing in March 2014 with 239 people, mostly Chinese, on board. Investigators believe someone may have deliberately switched off MH370's transponder before diverting it over the Indian Ocean. Debris has been collected from Indian Ocean islands and Africa's east coast and at least three pieces have been confirmed as coming from the missing plane.

US Firm Expects MH370 Search Contract Soon

U.S.-based seabed exploration firm Ocean Infinity on Wednesday said it was moving a vessel closer to a possible search area for missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 as it soon expects to be awarded a contract by Malaysia to resume the search. The disappearance of the aircraft en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing in March 2014 with 239 people aboard ranks among the world’s greatest aviation mysteries. NVOCCs Form US-South-Africa Partnership

CaroTrans, a global non-vessel operating common carrier (NVOCC) and ocean freight consolidator, has entered a partnership with Thrutainers International, an established NVOCC in South Africa. This cooperation creates a U.S.- Sub-Saharan Africa import/export LCL service network in this important trade lane. In 2016, Sub-Saharan Africa is forecasted to have a 3.5 percent GDP increase over 2015, the U.S. a 2.3 percent increase in GDP (Economist Intelligence Unit). Established in 1978, Thrutainers offers a national footprint within South Africa including container freight stations (CFS), multimodal inland services, and warehousing and distribution.

MOL Launches Mozambique Express Service

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) announced its new Mozambique Express Service (MZX), departing Singapore on June 7, 2013. MZX is a weekly service operated by PIL with seven vessels. MOL will have space on their new MZS service by swap with some spaces on new IOX service. Current MOL biweekly service, Mozambique Zuid Africa IOI Service (current MZX), will be discontinued upon commencement of new IOX and MZX services. MOL will enrich service coverage for emerging Mozambique and Indian Ocean Islands ports, with new direct access to Reunion, Beira and Nacala. Evergreen Line Extends Indian Ocean Network

Evergreen Line is teaming up with United Africa Feeder Line (UAFL) to extend its service network in the Indian Ocean. Evergreen announce a new ISC-Mauritius-Mozambique-Africa (IMMA) Service linking the Indian sub-continent, Indian Ocean Islands and Mozambique will be launched in late April. Employing three 2,500 TEU vessels, the biweekly service will have its inaugural sailing from Karachi on the 22nd of April 2-13. Indian Ocean Offshore Joint Management Zone Actioned

Indian Ocean Islands, Seychelles & Mauritius join forces to manage exploitation of world's largest offshore continental shelf area. With the help of the Commonwealth Secretariat Seychelles and Mauritius have established a joint commission, the first of its kind, to manage an offshore zone comprising 400,000 sq. kilometers of continental shelf. This development comes after their successful joint claim to the continental shelf before the United Nations. This will enable both countries to jointly regulate seabed activities, including exploration for petroleum and minerals, as well as the conservation and management of the living resources of the seabed, reports 'The Information Daily'.

CMA CGM To Launch New Service

CMA CGM Group is pleased to announce the launching of a new service linking Asia, Indian Ocean Islands and South Africa, effective May 8th, 2011. Called Shaka Express, this new weekly service will deploy 6 vessels between 4500 and 6500 TEU, and will allow CMA CGM to meet the growing market demand of South Africa, as over 30% of the country’s trade is with Asia. The service rotation will be as follows: Fuzhou, Xiamen, Kaohsiung, Hong Kong, Chiwan, Singapore, Port Louis, Durban, Port Elizabeth (Ngqura), Port Louis, Singapore and back to Fuzhou.

New Weekly Service to Mauritius Planned

Two members of the Famous Pacific Shipping network are cooperating to expand their portfolio of forwarding services in the niche trade between the UK and Mauritius. UK forwarder and NVOCC operator F.S. Mackenzie (FSM) is working with Mauritius shipping group, Somatrans to develop scheduled weekly services to the main port of Port Louis, for both LCL and FCL cargoes. Explained FSM's Managing Director, Alfred Stienen: "Mauritius, at little more than 700 square miles, is one of the fastest-expanding economies in Sub-Saharan Africa. F.S. Mackenzie expects trade to continue to expand this year, based on strong trends last year. Forecasts are for growth in Mauritius' GDP at about 5% for 2004.
