Kelleher to Succeed Tivnan as Ardmore Shipping CFO

Tanker owner/operator Ardmore Shipping Corporation on Wednesday announced the planned departure of its current chief financial officer Paul Tivnan and appointment of new CFO Bart Kelleher, effective September 28, 2022.Anthony Gurnee, Ardmore's chief executive officer, said, Kelleher and Tivnan will overlap and work together from September 1 to "achieve an orderly and well-planned transition".Kelleher brings to the role more than 25 years of progressive experience in the maritime, finance, energy and industrials sectors, having most recently served as chief executive officer of Chembulk Tankers. He previously served as both Chief Strategy Officer and Chief Financial Officer of the firm, and prior to that, was the chief operating officer of Principal Maritime Management.

Greensea Acquires C-2 Innovations' Line of Seafloor Crawling Robots

Greensea Systems today launched Bayonet Ocean Vehicles, a new company created to develop, manufacture, and distribute a line of amphibious robots recently acquired from C-2 Innovations Inc.The deal includes the acquisition of the IP and inventory of C-2 Innovations’ crawling robot product line. The robots have been rebranded and are launched to market as the Bayonet 150, Bayonet 250, and Bayonet 350 vehicles.Bayonet joins the Greensea group of companies as an independent entity managed by the Greensea Executive Team.

Maersk Supply Service Sends Another Vessel to Support The Ocean Cleanup

Danish offshore supply vessel operator Maersk Supply Service will deploy another vessel to support The Ocean Cleanup in its effort to remove plastic from the oceans.MSS said that this summer the Maersk Trader vessel will join its sister vessel Maersk Tender in the Pacific Ocean, strengthening The Ocean Cleanup’s pursuit to rid the oceans of plastic.The Maersk Trader is contracted for one year and will initially work on a trial in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch in Summer 2021."The extra vessel, Maersk Trader, was made possible by A.P.

Autonomous Vessels: FAU Gets $1.25m for Research

Florida Atlantic University’s College of Engineering and Computer Science has been awarded a $1.25 million grant by the United States Office of Naval Research (ONR) to undertake research in support of autonomous unmanned marine vehicle platforms for coastal surveillance, coastal surveys, target tracking and protection of at-sea assets. Tony Bon: From Yarn Handler to CEO

January of 2017 saw the retirement of one of the veterans of the Samson family. Tony Bon, CEO through 2015 retired as of December 31, 2016. Bon shares his impressions of the time he’s been with Samson and the high points of both the company and the industry it serves. In the Navy they have an expression to describe a captain that moves up through the ranks: “He came up through the hawse pipes.” Bon’s journey to the corner office at Samson is a similar story. In 1974, after leaving Berklee College of Music in Boston, Bon needed a job.

FORAN Design Wins Korean Universities' First Prize

Hae-Jun Ji and his team of other sophomores and juniors at the Naval Architecture and Ocean Systems Engineering department of the Busan-based Korea Maritime and Ocean University (KMOU) won the first prize in the 25th National Ship Design Contest for University Students organized by the Society of Naval Architects of Korea (SNAK). The award ceremony was held within SNAK’s 2016 General Meeting & Annual Autumn Conference on 3 November in Changwon. The First Prize certificate with a cash award of 1,000,000 won (1,000 US dollar) was presented to the KMOU team by Seok-Ho Ban, President of SNAK. The Contest has been held annually since 1992. Each year SNAK sets two assignment categories: the design of a determined type of ship and the open-theme design of an innovative ship.

Over the next decade the maritime sector is likely to see one of the largest changes since sail gave way to steam. Unmanned Surface Vehicles (USV) are now being considered for various marine roles and the drivers for rapid development are significant. Unmanned or autonomous vessels have passed through the trial and evaluation stage and are now being adopted for civilian and military applications. The maritime sector now has the opportunity to shape technology developments from legislative and end-user standpoints.

Fincantieri Orders Heat Power Systems for Cruise Newbuilds

Italian shipbuilding group Fincantieri has selected Climeon’s heat power system Climeon Ocean for its energy efficient solutions, purchasing six Climeon Ocean 450M systems to be installed in its upcoming new cruise ship builds. Total capacity on all ships is up to 2.7 MW. With the latest order, Fincantieri has become the first shipyard contracted to install Climeon Ocean on new cruise ships. SOSI Delivers Mooring Winches; Completes Test Pad

Sound Ocean Systems, Inc. (SOSI) announced the delivery of two unique mooring winches, both tested on its newly constructed test pad at its primary manufacturing facility in Sultan, Wash. SOSI recently delivered two all-electric, custom designed, VFD controlled large mooring winches developed for Oregon State University and the University of Washington. Although configured differently, both the 175 HP OSU Heavy Lift winch and the 75 HP UW Medium Lift winch contained SOSI’s continuous position sensing level wind system. The Heavy Lift Winch is capable of deploying or recovering 25,000 lbs.

Heavy lift operations offshore are an awe-inspiring feat, but an operation that requires consistent monitoring of man, machine and procedure to ensure they are conducted in as an efficient and safe manner as possible. Due to a growing focus on safety related to subsea lifting operations, DNV GL recently established a Joint Industry Project (JIP) to develop practical methods for reducing the risks and lifetime cost of steel wire ropes for subsea lifting applications, using an integrated systems approach.

3 Phoenix Acquired by Ultra Electronics

The McLean Group announced that it acted as the exclusive mergers and acquisitions (M&A) advisor to 3 Phoenix, Inc. (3 Phoenix) in its sale to Ultra Electronics Holdings plc (Ultra) for an initial cash consideration of $70 million. Additional payments of up to $17 million will be due subject to earnings growth over the next three years. 3 Phoenix is a supplier of specialist sonar, radar, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance products and solutions. For 10 years, the company has delivered mission critical, real-time sensor and processing systems, primarily to the U.S. Navy, but also to commercial customers. 3 Phoenix is a bolt-on acquisition to Ultra's existing Tactical & Sonar Systems Division.

Cardinal Companies International, headquartered in Alvin, Texas, has launched Cardinal Marine to provide ship repair and dockside services, offering 24/7 marine services for topside repairs with the capability to deliver support and services world-wide. The company says it mobilizes its crews to meet clients where it’s most convenient for them to berth and perform any repairs and services on-site at local ports throughout the Gulf of Mexico. This service alone initially saves the customer time and money before any services are performed.

Surface & Subsea Unmanned Autonomous Vessel to Debut

Ocean Aero has designed a 'game-changing' ruggedized surface & sub-surface vessel: the "Submaran", powered by wind and solar, capable of several months at sea that can be deployed from land, sea or air. The designers will present it at the Blue Tech & Blue Economy Summit, November 7-8, 2013. The "Submaran" will be delivered both as a system for purchase and as a part of a contracted System as a Service (SaaS) fleet of data gathering vessels that customers need not purchase or manage.

General Dynamics Advanced Information Systems, a business unit of General Dynamics, completed the comprehensive risk reduction program for the U.S. Navy’s Knifefish Surface Mine Countermeasure Unmanned Undersea Vehicle (UUV) program. Designed to discover any potential systems defect early on in the program’s development phase, the configuration item test (CIT) successfully verified key components within the UUV system including the hardware architecture and critical areas of hardware and software integration.

Caley Develops Deepwater Lowering System for Gorgon Project

Handling systems specialist, Caley Ocean Systems has been awarded a contract by Subsea 7 to design, manufacture and supply a deepwater lowering system (DLS). The DLS will initially be deployed by Subsea 7 on the Chevron-operated Gorgon project, located off the northwest coast of Western Australia, to lower subsea structures weighing up to 950Te in water depths in excess of 1,300m. The DLS comprises two double drum traction and storage winches and fully redundant controls, all mounted on an integrated grillage structure for rapid mobilization onto the pipelay and heavy lift vessel Sapura 3000.

Caley Upgrades Saipem Reel Carousel

Offshore handling systems specialist, Caley Ocean Systems completed the refurbishment and upgrade of a 2,500-ton, 25-meter diameter reel carousel for Italian offshore contractor Saipem. The reel carousel will be used to transport umbilicals and flowlines from Norway to China on Big Lift heavy lift vessel Happy Rover, for the deepwater Liwan 3-1 field gas project in the South China Sea. Originally supplied over 15 years ago by Caley, the carousel has been extensively used by Saipem on a wide range of projects.

Torqeedo Powers Searobotics Unmanned Vessels

SeaRobotics specializes in creating vessels that are remotely or autonomously operated. A number of these unmanned surface vessels (USV) are powered by motors manufactured by Torqeedo, a leader in electric propulsion. The USVs by SeaRobotics range from 3.5-11 meters. Customers using these USVs include domestic and international military organizations, universities, oceanographic institutes, and various government agencies. Heeding the call to join “An Ocean in Common,” authors flooded the Oceans ‘13 MTS/IEEE San Diego technical program committee with a record number of abstracts in a single day. Special topics include an Ultra-deep track discussing current and prospective robotic technologies, plus a panel of scientists to consider research questions. Oceans2013 Chair Bob Wernli, and Co-Chair Kevin Hardy, developer of the unmanned landers for James Cameron’s DeepSea Challenge Expedition, will be the session conveners. “James’ intention is to be certain the door remains open to other explorers,” Hardy said.

Jan De Nul Group to supply a 5,400 tonnes capacity cable turntable to offshore handling systems specialist Caley Ocean Systems. The turntable, including a 5 tonnes and 10 tonnes deck tensioner, is destined for the vessel Willem de Vlamingh. In addition to this turntable, Caley is supplying a modular loading tower assembly comprising loading arm, inboard chute, and control cabin.
