Ex-Petrobras CEO Bendine Convicted of Corruption in Brazil

Aldemir Bendine, the former chief executive of state-controlled oil firm Petroleo Brasileiro SA and Banco do Brasil, was found guilty on Wednesday of corruption charges and sentenced by a federal judge to 11 years in prison. Judge Sergio Moro ruled that Bendine used his position at Petrobras to take 3 million reais ($924,527) in bribes from construction firm Odebrecht. "The condemned took his position as CEO of Petrobras amid a corruption scandal and with the expectation that he would solve problems," Moro wrote in his ruling. Bendine's legal team did not immediately reply to requests for comment. His attorneys said throughout the trial that he was innocent and that no company received special benefits from Petrobras or Banco do Brasil under his leadership.

Shipbreaking NGOs Attack FPSO North Sea Producer

16 August of last year the FPSO North Sea Producer was beached in Chittagong, Bangladesh. The ship was allowed to leave the UK based on the false promise that it would be further operationally used in the Tin Can port in Nigeria. One year on, the battle to hold the owners and cash buyers accountable for the illegal export of the FPSO is not over. The North Sea Producer (ex Dagmar Maersk) was deployed in the McCulloch field in the North Sea, transporting and extracting oil from the UK continental shelf for 17 years, and was owned by the North Sea Production Company, a single-ship joint venture between the Danish A.P. Moeller Maersk and the Brazilian Odebrecht. Once the field closed, the FPSO North Sea Producer was laid up in Teesport for a year while the owners were looking for buyers.

Magdalena River Project Dredges Up Economic Promise

Magdalena River (Photo: Wiki Commons)

The hulking backhoe dredges up rocks and silt from the shallows of the muddy Magdalena River in the first laborious step to transform the waterway into an engine of economic growth. The excavation along a verdant stretch near Barrancabermeja, an inland oil and coal hub, is part of a $600 million government bid to reclaim the river, once Colombia's primary transport route. By clearing logjams, the aim is to allow big cargo barges to steam up 900 km (560 miles) from the Caribbean coast to Puerto Salgar, close to the capital Bogota.

Floater Orders 2014

Jim Mccaul

The overall number of orders is similar to the average ordering pace over the past 10 years, during which an average of roughly 25 production and storage floaters were ordered annually. But the ordering pace by type unit is quite different. FPSO orders in 2014 were 25% below the 13.5 average ordering pace over the past ten years – and in 2014 no orders were placed for Spars, TLPs or Production Semis, which between 2004 and 2013 averaged 3.5 orders per year. Offsetting these declines were gains in orders for FLNGs and FSRUs.
