USCG Releases Final Statement on El Faro Sinking

The U.S. Coast Guard has released its final action memo on the loss of the S.S. El Faro and its 33 crew members during a 2015 hurricane near Crooked Island, Bahamas. In the final action memo, Commandant Adm. Paul Zukunft approved the findings of fact, analysis and conclusions detailed in the Marine Board of Investigation’s Report of Investigation (ROI), essentially marking it as the official Coast Guard position on the cause of the marine casualty. failure of the Coast Guard to adequately oversee the third party in this case…

Carteret County Declared Coast Guard Community

The Coast Guard declared Carteret County an official Coast Guard Community Thursday during a ceremony at Crystal Coast Civic Center in Morehead City. Rear Adm. Stephen Metruck, 5th District commander, presented Robin Comer, Carteret County Commissioner, with an official proclamation before a crowd at the ceremony, after a luncheon with community members, leaders, volunteers and service members. “Thank you for being our friends, our neighbors, and making Carteret County a home away from home,” said Metruck. Some cities and counties make special efforts to acknowledge the professional work of the Coast Guard women and men assigned to their area. Making Coast Guard men and women and their families feel at home is an invaluable contribution to morale.

Bollinger Issues Statement on Fast Response Cutters (FRC) Award

Action Eliminates Threat of Spill

NRC Contractors, Adam Wilkison, Collin Potts and Ron Broadway, put up a barrier of think plastic to prevent fuel from escaping the containment area around a damaged tank at the BP Harbor Island Seattle Terminal Dec. 6. The Coast Guard, Washington Department of Ecology and BP worked with NRC contractors to keep any of the fuel from entering Puget Sound. NRC contractors meet to discuss their plans to keep diesel fuel from escaping a damaged tank and entering into Puget Sound at the BP Harbor Island Seattle Terminal Dec.

Crew Rescued from Sinking Ship

Rescuers from the U.S. Coast Guard and Alaska Air National Guard saved 23 crew members from an Asian cargo ship taking on water south of the Aleutian Islands, officials said. "People are out of harm's way, they are rescued and they are safe,'' said Alaska National Guard spokesman Maj. Mike Haller late Monday. All 23 crew members were hoisted into two National Guard Pave Hawk helicopters and a Coast Guard helicopter and taken to Adak Island in the Aleutians. The rescue was conducted in very challenging weather, said Master Sgt. Sal Provenzano with the Alaska Rescue Coordination Center. A nearby merchant marine vessel was standing by to take any crew member who couldn't fit on the three helicopters…

The Coast Guard Announces Deployment of Homeport

The Coast Guard officially announced its initial deployment of Homeport, an internet portal. Homeport (version 1.0) is the official Coast Guard information technology system for maritime security created to provide information and services to the maritime community and the public over the Internet. Coast Guard Federal Maritime Security Coordinators will use Homeport as a primary means for the day-to-day management and communication of port security matters with Area Maritime Security Committee members, commercial vessel and facility owners and operators, government partners, and the public.
